Voldemort & Harry Are RELATED? – Harry Potter Explained

It seems odd to think that one of the most evil wizards in recent wizarding world history was a nice old historians great nephew, but there you go! Gellert Grindelwald was sent to his great aunt Bathilda Bagshots home in Godrics Hollow after he was expelled from the Durmstrang Institute, which was how he met Albus Dumbledore for the very first time. Despite his many flaws , Bathilda clearly had a soft spot in her heart for her great nephew, and even had his photo in a frame at her home decades after he was defeated by Dumbledore and put into prison.

The Voldemort Family Connection You Never Knew About In Half

Harry Potter fans already know about Voldemort’s tragic family history. His mother was a witch named Merope Gaunt, a descendant of magical eugenicist Salazar Slytherin. Merope used magic to force Voldemort’s father, a muggle named Tom Riddle Sr., into falling in love with her. But when the magic wore off, Riddle Sr. abandoned his pregnant wife. She died shortly after giving birth to Tom Riddle Jr. in a muggle orphanage, where her son spent his childhood before his acceptance into Hogwarts. Riddle Sr.’s abandonment eventually led Voldemort to adopt his ancestor’s beliefs that muggles and wizards and witches born to them didn’t deserve to live.

Ralph Fiennes transformed into Voldemort for four of the eight movies. Richard Bremmer took the role in Sorcerer’s Stone and Voldemort didn’t appear in Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban or Half-Blood Prince. But Tom Riddle Jr. features heavily in Chamber of Secrets and Half-Blood Prince, and that’s how we ended up with a real life Voldemort family connection you never knew about in the latter.

The Death Eaters Were Almost Called The Knights Of Walpurgis

During his school years, Tom Riddle formed a group of friends he was able to manipulate to do his bidding. Many of these friends went on to become his loyal band of Death Eaters during the First Wizarding War and beyond.

In an interview with the BBC, Rowling revealed that she had originally planned to call the group the “Knights of Walpurgis.” After all these years, she’s even kept a scrap of paper referencing that name in case she ever decides to use it.

Are Harry Potter And Voldemort Brothers

It is well-known among ardent Harry Potter fans that all the wizarding families are somehow related.

Is it possible, though, that Harry and Voldemort are more than just distant cousins three-times removed?

That depends on how you look at it.

Remember the scene when Harry goes to buy his first wand? When the celebrated wand-maker Ollivander leans over and gives Harry his new weapon, what does he say to the aspiring hero?

It so happens that the phoenix whose tail feather is in your wand, gave another feather just one other. It is curious indeed that you should be destined for this wand when its brother why its brother gave you that scar.

We know from the story that wands have a certain degree of life within them. After all, something must be living to make a choice, and Ollivander insists that wands do make choices. This is the reason Harrys and Voldemorts wands cannot defeat one another. The wands are brothers, and neither will betray the other.

But what if the wands are merely symbols of another brotherhood? What if the brother wands are actually wielded by brother wizards?

Pardon?

Well, lets think about it what makes two men to be brothers? Common parents, for starters. And in the dramatic scene in the graveyard, Harrys blood is used to raise the Dark Lord. And whose blood runs in the veins of Harry? The blood of Lily and James Potter, of course.

It makes it familial and intimate.

How Harry Potter & Lord Voldemort Are Secretly Related

Voldemort does not appear in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, although his presence and actions are felt: he once again declares war, and begins to rise to power once more. He murders Amelia Bones of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and begins to target members of the Order of the Phoenix, including Emmeline Vance.

Rowling uses several chapters as exposition to establish Voldemort’s backstory. In a series of flashbacks, using the pensieve as a plot device, she reveals that Voldemort was the son of the witch Merope Gaunt and a Muggle called Tom Riddle. Riddle abandoned Merope before their child’s birth, soon after which Merope died. After living in an orphanage, young Riddle met Dumbledore, who told him he was a wizard and arranged for him to attend Hogwarts. Riddle was outwardly a model student, but was in reality a psychopath who took sadistic pleasure in using his powers to harm and control people. He eventually murdered his father and grandparents as revenge for abandoning him. The book also discusses Riddle’s hatred of Muggles, his obsession with Horcruxes, and his desire to split his soul to achieve immortality. Rowling stated Voldemort’s conception under the influence of a love potion symbolises the coercive circumstances under which he was brought into the world.

Relationships With Other Characters

Voldemort calls Death Eaters his true family, though he has compassion for none, using them only as servants rather than comrades, eliminating them almost capriciously if they fail him in some way, are unfortunate enough to be in close proximity when he is enraged, or if it serves his evil plan. Indeed, Voldemort murders Severus Snape, who he probably considered among his most trusted and valuable Death Eaters after Snape killed Dumbledore, solely in an attempt to gain more magical power although he did express regret at doing so. Voldemort also shows no respect or allegiance to Bellatrix Lestrange, his most fanatical follower he does rescue her during the Battle at the Ministry, though likely because she was still useful to him, rather than feeling any loyalty to her.

Voldemort became obsessed with Harry Potter after he failed to kill the one-year-old boy livid that a helpless infant caused his downfall. He later seeks revenge on Harry to prove that he, Voldemort, is the most feared and powerful wizard of all time. Voldemort considers Harry weak in comparison to himself and he always discounted how love’s power has aided Harry. But after possessing Harry’s mind, Harry’s overwhelming emotions for his friends and family are so overpowering and disturbing to Voldemort that they drive him out. He never attempts to possess Harry again.

They’re Both Descended From The Peverell Family

And then it came to Harry in one shining piece, the memory that had stirred at the sound of the name “Peverell”: a filthy old man brandishing an ugly ring in the face of a Ministry official, and he cried aloud, “Marvolo Gaunt!””Sorry?” said Ron and Hermione together.” You-Know-Who’s grandfather! In the Pensieve! With Dumbledore! Marvolo Gaunt said he was descended from the Peverells!”Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, chapter 22

This is referring to the scene in chapter 10 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where Harry and Dumbledore take a stroll down Memory Lane in the Pensieve and observe this scene with Voldemort’s grandfather.

His voice shook and he could feel the color in his face, but he did not care.”My mum told Sirius that Dumbledore borrowed the cloak! This is why! He wanted to examine it, because he thought it was the third Hallow! Ignotus Peverell is buried in Godric’s Hollow….” Harry was walking blindly around the tent, feeling as though great new vistas of truth were opening all around him. “He’s my ancestor! I’m descended from the third brother! It all makes sense!”Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, chapter 22

This means that they’re both descended from the Peverell brothers, making them distantly related.

The relevant statement is in a moderated Q& A session with J. K. Rowling from 2007 shortly after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The director said the family connection wasn’t the reason he got the part

In the Half-Blood Prince, we see Tom Riddle Jr. as a troubled child and teenager before he became the most evil wizard of all time .

In one scene, Albus Dumbledore visits 11-year-old Riddle in the orphanage, and explains to him about the magical world, inviting him to Hogwarts.

In this scene, the young Riddle is played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Voldemort actor Ralph Fiennes’ actual nephew.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin, now 23, from London got the part over thousands of young actors who auditioned for the role.

Some speculated that he was selected due to the family connection, but Harry Potter director David Yates said this was not the case but admitted the family resemblance was a “clincher.”

Yates described Fiennes Tiffin as “very focused and disciplined” and said he “got the corners and dark moods and odd spirit of the character” as well as having a “wonderful haunted quality that seemed to bring Tom Riddle alive on-screen for us.”

While he was just 11 years old when he is in Harry Potter, Hero has gone on to star in lead roles including of Hardin Scott in the film After.

Magical Abilities And Skills

Rowling establishes Voldemort throughout the series as an extremely powerful, intelligent, and ruthless dark wizard, described as the greatest and most powerful Dark Wizard of all time. He is known as one of the greatest Legilimens in the world and a highly accomplished Occlumens he can read minds and shield his own from penetration. Besides Dumbledore, he is also the only wizard ever known to be able to apparate silently. Voldemort was also said to fear one wizard alone, Dumbledore.

On her website, Rowling wrote that Voldemort’s wand is made of yew, whose sap is poisonous and which symbolises death. It forms a deliberate contrast to Harry’s wand, which is made of holly, which she chose because holly is alleged to repel evil.

Rowling establishes in the books that Voldemort is magically connected to Harry via Harry’s forehead scar. He disembodies himself when his Killing Curse targeting Harry rebounds on him, leaving the scar on Harry’s forehead. In the books, and to a lesser extent in the films, Harry’s scar serves as an indicator of Voldemort’s presence: it burns when the Dark Lord is near or when Voldemort is feeling murderous or exultant. According to Rowling, by attacking Harry when he was a baby Voldemort gave him “tools no other wizard possessedthe scar and the ability it conferred, a magical window into Voldemort’s mind”.

The Harry Potter Movies Were A Family Affair

To be fair to the Fienneses, Ralph wasn’t the only Harry Potter star whose family member landed a role in the movies. Sophie Thompson, who played Improper Use of Magic Office employee Mafalda Hopkirk in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, is the sister of Emma Thompson, a.k.a. Professor Trelawney. Sophie is also an actress in her own right. Fans of the best romantic comedies of all time may recognize her from Four Weddings and a Funeral, and she’s appeared on multiple British TV series. Speaking of famous siblings, Emma Watson’s younger brother, Alex Watson, appears as an uncredited extra in a scene with his sister in Order of the Phoenix.

It wasn’t just actors who snuck relatives into the movies. Chris Columbus, director of Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets, put all four of his children into the second film. The three younger children didn’t have named roles. Brendan was 10 when the movie premiered in 2002, and played Boy in Study Hall 1. Violet, then 8, was Girl with Flowers, and Isabella, 6, was Girl in Bookstore. Violet has since had small roles in 2010’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and 2020’s The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, both directed by her father.

Albania Was An Important Place To Voldemort Before He Hid There In The Wake Of The First Wizarding War

Most fans probably remember that the bodiless remains of Voldemort hid in an Albanian forest to regain strength after he was defeated by baby Harry in the First Wizarding War.

He also returned to the same forest after his host body, Professor Quirrell, was killed in “Sorcerer’s Stone.”

Although it is never exactly revealed why Voldemort chose that location as a hiding place, it does hold a certain significance to him. The first time visited Albania his mission was to retrieve the lost diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw which her daughter Helena had revealed to be hidden in a forest there in order to create one of his seven Horcruxes.

A Horcrux is a powerful, dark object that contains a piece of a witch or wizard’s soul and keeps that soul fragment alive regardless of their body’s fate.

Anthony Goldstein & Tina And Queenie Goldstein

The shared surname might be a bit of a giveaway, but since this connection stretches between Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them we thought wed point it out. While Dumbledores Army member Anthony was a Ravenclaw, his relatives, Porpentina and Queenie, didnt go to Hogwarts, and instead attended Ilvermorny.

J.K. Rowling hinted that the characters belonged to the same family in a tweet, which read: Well, I think its widely known that that characters of tina and Queenie are sisters, but not that their surname is Goldstein. She then said their relationship to Anthony was distant.

The Diary Of Tom Riddle

The first Horcrux â Tom Riddleâs diary â made by Lord Voldemort came into existence when the villain was only a sixteen-year-old Hogwarts student. Before he was defeated, Voldemort passed the diary on to a man whom he considered to be a faithful follower, Lucius Malfoy.

The diary then found its way into the hands of Ginny Weasley, who, terrifyingly, nearly died because of the whole ordeal and Tom Riddle began to seep through its pages in an attempt to come back while the real Voldemort was off hiding. Harry managed to destroy it by impulsively stabbing it with a Basilisk fang, with Basilisk venom just so happening to be one of the very few substances that is corrosive to a Horcrux â a crucial bit of luck for Harry.

He Probably Could’ve Gotten A Job At The Ministry Of Magic

Wizard Battle: Dumbledore vs Voldemort | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

As one of the top students in his class, Tom Riddle was bound to have many opportunities presented to him after finishing at Hogwarts.

In his final year, Professor Slughorn offered to set him up with job interviews by using his connections at the Ministry of Magic.

Instead, after getting rejected for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position at Hogwarts, Riddle went to work at Borgin and Burkes antique shop. It was this job that gave him the opportunity to acquire both Salazar Slytherin’s locket and Helga Hufflepuff’s cup, which he turned into Horcruxes.
