Thomas was a snobbish squire who had the worst attitude that nobody wanted in a village leader, while Mary did retailing for Lady Margaret Nurseries branch of the British Association of Garden Centres. The story begins in of 1943, where an absurd tragedy happened inside the house that nobody is able to find out how it happened. When the Riddles’ maid goes to work that day, she discovers all three Riddles dead in the drawing room, “still in their dinner things”. The police find no evidence of murder or suicide, claiming to be in perfect health except for the fact that they were dead. They arrest the Riddles’ gardener Frank Bryce for questioning, since the door and windows was not forced open or shattered on the night of their murder, and the Riddles’ cook testified that he was the only one with a key to the house. Frank, however, said the only person he saw that night was a mysterious dark-haired boy, and was released due to lack of evidence, but many still believed he committed the murders.

Suddenly a letter from Molly Weasley addressed to the Dursleys arrives, She asks if Harry can join Hermione and the Weasley family to go to the Quidditch World Cup final between Ireland and Bulgaria. Harry writes an extra sentence or two to Sirius’s letter explaining that he will be heading to The Burrow before sending the letter via Hedwig.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Set In 1992/93
The first Harry Potter sequel film follows on pretty simply it starts at the end of Summer in 1992, going through a full school year at Hogwarts leading into the start of Summer ’93.
Chamber Of Secrets is a movie with problems, particularly as it pertains to the length and the deus ex machinas/plot conveniences the movie utilizes. Nevertheless, it is still a good film. There are no outright terrible films in the series, just ones with significantly larger issues.

This raises some questions between the trio, as nobody else heard Hagrid talking privately with Madam Maxime that night and Rita is supposed to be banned from Hogwarts.
The trio go to Hagrid’s cabin and, along with Dumbledore, try to persuade him to return. They point out that not everyone has abandoned Hagrid, and that everyone has secrets in their pasts. After Dumbledore leaves, Hagrid remembers his late father telling him never to be ashamed of what he is and gets over his depression. He gives his support to Harry in the Tournament, believing that if Harry wins, he could show everyone they do not have to be ashamed of what they are. This is enough to convince Harry to put aside his pride and take Cedric’s advice.
What Is The Setting Of Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Like the other Harry Potter movies, a majority of Order of the Phoenix is set at good ol Hogwarts. This is Harrys home away from home. Well, actually his main home since we dont count the house he lives at on Privet Drive during the summer as much of a home.

Why Did Harry Potter Take Place In 1981
Why couldn’t it be in the 1940s? Were there any special events happening in 1980-1990 that relate to the story? I’m doing this for school and I couldn’t find anything.
- 2I suspect the answer is JKR writing it in the early 90s, and setting the plot around the time of writing, though given how much she talks about HP, she might have commented in not setting it earlier in our times.Feb 28 ’19 at 0:13

- 4Your teacher will almost certainly want you to mention that the book’s target audience will find it much easier to relate to a contemporary setting. That’s why books like Percy Jackson, Worst Witch, etc are set in the here-and-now.Feb 28 ’19 at 0:46
- 1Hi close voters, what is primarily opinion-based in an author making a decision about when her story takes place?
The first Harry Potter book is set in 1991. There’s no deep thematic reason for that year. It’s just the year when J.K. Rowling started writing the book. Harry Potter himself was born in 1980 but that was just so he’d be eleven in 1991.
But in 1990, my then boyfriend and I decided to move up to Manchester together. It was after a weekend’s flat-hunting, when I was travelling back to London on my own on a crowded train, that the idea for Harry Potter simply fell into my head.
When Harry Wonders Why Tom Riddle Got An Award From The School Ron Correctly Guesses The Truth About Him Murdering Moaning Myrtle
After discovering Tom Riddle’s diary, Ron tells Harry that Riddle received an award for special services to the school .
Ron jokingly says Riddle got the award for killing Moaning Myrtle.
“Maybe he got thirty O.W.L.s or saved a teacher from the giant squid,” Ron guesses. “Maybe he murdered Myrtle that would’ve done everyone a favor.”
Little do they know at the time, but Riddle really was the one who opened the Chamber of Secrets 50 years ago and killed Myrtle. He received the award after framing Hagrid for the crime, though.

Alternate Explanation: The Books Take Place Between 1997 And And 2004
While this isn’t the generally accepted answer , there are other canon sources that seem to indicate a different date.
- The first book was published in 1997
- Dudley has a PlayStation in Book 4
Dudleys diet isnt going too well. My aunt found him smuggling doughnuts into his room yesterday. They told him theyd have to cut his pocket money if he keeps doing it, so he got really angry and chucked his PlayStation out of the window. Thats a sort of computer thing you can play games on. Bit stupid really, now he hasnt even got Mega-Mutilation Part Three to take his mind off things.
- The Daily Prophet Newsletters are dated 1998-1999 and are set in the timeframe of book two and three.
It should be reiterated that this way of calculating the dates is contradicted by practically all other canon, and is not the generally accepted answer.

I’m not supposed to show you what illegal Dark curses look like until you’re in the sixth year…How are you supposed to defend yourself against something you’ve never seen? …You need to be prepared. Credence Barebone Is Born
Credence was likely born in 1901, since he looked similar enough to Corvus Jr. for neither Irma nor his aunt to notice they had a different baby than the one they got on the ship with.
The ship lurches again. IRMA snatches BABY CREDENCE, not noticing the switch amid the confusion.– Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

At The End Of Prisoner Of Azkaban Dumbledore Hints At Professor Trelawney’s Prophecy Regarding Harry And Voldemort
Harry experiences Trelawney making a prediction during his final Divination exam in his third year. When Harry asks Dumbledore if he thinks it was a real prediction, the headmaster says yes.
“Do you know, Harry, I think she might have been,” he said thoughtfully. “Who’d have thought it? That brings her total of real predictions up to two.”
The first real prediction Dumbledore is implicitly referring to is the one she made about Harry and Voldemort all those years ago .
The Prime Minister’s Office
We begin Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in the British Prime Minister’s office. It is a nice office: “it was a handsome room, with a fine marble fireplace facing the long sash windows, firmly closed against the unseasonable chill” . It is here that lots of big decisions are made. In fact, the Prime Minister is waiting for a call from a president from another country when the chapter opens. On the wall of the office hangs a magical portrait used by the Wizarding world to communicate with the Muggle world. The portrait is of “a froglike little man wearing a long silver wig” . The fact that the Prime Minister’s office is connected to the Wizarding world reveals to us that, on occasion, it is imperative that both worlds work together, and that the two worlds have been working together, perhaps, for hundreds of years. Though the Prime Minister might not like visits from the Wizarding world, he knows they are necessary

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Set In 1926
Set over sixty years before the events of the main Harry Potter series of movies, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them presented fans of the franchise with a fair amount of hope for its future.
Taking place in New York, with a British Hufflepuff main character, the movie does not reach the heights of most main Potter films, but retained its own magic and got fans excited for what was to come from this prequel franchise. These expectations quickly got dashed, however.
During The Battle Of Hogwarts Hermione Repeats A Line To Ron About Forgetting He Can Do Magic And It’s A Perfect Callback To Sorcerer’s Stone
As they dash to the Whomping Willow in order to find Voldemort, Harry, Ron, and Hermione come up short when they realize the tree’s branches are flailing. Ron spots the knot on the trunk that freezes when you press it.
“I can see the place,” Ron says. “If we just had Crookshanks again “
“Crookshanks?” Hermione replies. “Are you a wizard, or what?”
This was a callback to the scene in “Sorcerer’s Stone” when Hermione needed fire in order to fight Devil’s Snare off Ron and Harry. She lamented that she doesn’t have any wood to start a fire.
“HAVE YOU GONE MAD?” Ron yelled at her. “ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT?”

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
After the climactic third act of the fourth film, heres where the franchise takes a darker, far more adult term. With Voldemort on the scene again, Harry finds himself caught in a struggle with the Ministry of Magic, and its ruthless apparatchik Dolores Umbridge, who takes on the Defence Against the Dark Arts post at Hogwarts. He, Ron and Hermione gather a student army to lead the fight against the Dark Lord but there are also exams to deal with and a few romantic issues too. Oh, to be fifteen again.
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry and friends return to Hogwarts with a bang the bang of a flying Ford Anglia as it crashes into the Whomping Willow, that is. After being spotted by Muggles and narrowly avoiding expulsion, youd think that the rest of Harrys second year would be smooth sailing in comparison right?
Wrong. When the school caretakers cat is found petrified along with a bone-chilling message that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened, fear and suspicions start to arise and of course, only worsen when students start getting petrified too. Nobody can figure out who the culprit is, only that he refers to himself as the Heir and seems to be on the warpath.
But as our young heroes know well by now, if you want a mystery solved right, you have to do it yourself. Which they do through a combination of Polyjuice potion brewing, mysterious flashbacks provided by a sentient journal, and a truly horrific excursion to see a giant spider called Aragog. The book culminates in a visit to the titular chamber, which lies underneath Hogwarts and contains yet another deadly threat that Harry must face.
But of course, this being an early Potter book, its not all din and danger. Comic relief comes in the form of moronic, egocentric professor Gilderoy Lockhart, and toilet ghost Moaning Myrtle who, in true Rowling fashion, ends up being key to the central plot twist of the story.

The Harry Potter Films Take Place In The 2000’s
The films, on the other hand, do not take place in the 1990s. While it is not specified in the dialogue of the first film, it can be inferred from the modern haircuts, technology, and a primary school certificate for Dudley Dursley that it takes place in the year 2001.
The books and films take place from 1991-1998 and between 2001-2008, respectively, though it’s easy to get confused, considering the final book was released in 2007 and the final film in 2011.
But there are plenty of debates online between fans who consider the films to have taken place in the same timeline as the books. One reddit user points out that in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 graveyard scene, “Harry’s parents’ headstone still says they died in 1981” and another said that the movies also take place in ’90s, but it was “laziness” on the part of the filmmakers to include aspects of modern day.
It would likely be easier for everyone if we had access to a time-turner.
