Years Of The Sorcerer’s Stone: Every Harry Potter Quidditch Scene Ranked

Which Quidditch Position Should You Play?

In honor of the first film’s 20th anniversary, let’s rank all of the scenes involving every witch and wizard’s favorite magical sport.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, the first installment in the movie franchise based on the iconic Harry Potter book series, turns 20 years old today, Nov. 16. Its been two decades since a young wizard, his pals, a magical school, and a villain who shall not be named changed the course of movies forever. Not only is it the third-highest-grossing film series of all time trailing only the MCU and Star Wars but it has also inspired theme parks, a spin-off movie series, and thousands of Halloween costumes.

But if youre reading this article, you already know that. Which is why our focus today is not on why the Harry Potter movies are so great, but rather on one specific aspect of them and that is the greatest fictional sport ever depicted on screen, Quidditch.

Quidditch is an unsung hero of the Harry Potter movies. Life at Hogwarts for Harry, Ron, and Hermione can certainly get dark throughout the films, but Quidditch is always there to add a change of pace. While the magical sport doesnt appear in every movie , it provides consistency, not unlike Harrys Snitch-seeking prowess that he so often displays throughout his time at Hogwarts.

Without further ado, its time to hop on our broomsticks and hit the pitch, because were about to rank the best Quidditch scenes in Harry Potter.

How Do You Avoid A Bludger

The Sloth Grip Roll is a Quidditch move developed to avoid being hit by a Bludger .

What happens if you come off your broom in Quidditch? If a player falls off their broom or gets hit with a bludger, they are knocked out, meaning they are required to drop any balls they are in possession of and must immediately dismount their broom, put one hand up in the air and return and touch their sides goal hoops before re-entering play.

The Wronski Feint, also known as the Wronski Defensive Feint, was a tactic in Quidditch where a Seeker would pretend to spot the Golden Snitch far below and race to catch it, hoping the opposing seeker would copy.

It’s Visible To Muggles

Remember, wizards need to hide their existence from the non-magical world. Yet Quidditch is an extraordinarily visible sport, played in open stadiums and fields with over a dozen enchanted players and balls zipping around. And it’s commonly played not just at Hogwarts or the World Cup, but casually across the globe, making it miraculous its sorcerers haven’t been discovered yet.

In fact, Quidditch’s visibility became such an issue that the Wizards Council outlawed playing within 100 miles of Muggles. That’s one way to regulate its display, but leaves very few arenas that can actually be legally used.

Films And Video Games

Quidditch appears in five of the eight Harry Potter films. Some Quidditch subplots, such as Ron’s Keeper storyline in Order of the Phoenix, were cut to save time in the films. Video games that feature Quidditch include:

In the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey attraction in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at the Islands of Adventure theme park, Quidditch is featured near the end where riders are flown through the Quidditch pitch. A storefront near Ollivanders Wand Shop is themed as a Quidditch supply with a Golden Snitch on the sign and a case containing animated Quaffle and Bludgers surrounded by Beaters’ bats.

How To Play Quidditch In Harry Potter

Based on this article’s title, you might think I despise the wizarding world’s Quidditch sport. Not at all I’m impressed by J.K. Rowling’s imagination and complexity of rules with her crafted broomstick battles. That said, Quidditch contains several glaring faults that would make it insufferable to both players and fans.

But first, a refresher on how the game works. Teams consist of seven players, each mounted on flying broomsticks. Three Chasers are assigned to throw the Quaffle ball through the opposing team’s three hoops , earning 10 points when successful. One Keeper defends these hoops. Two Beaters wield bats to knock the violent Bludger balls away from teammates and towards rivals. Finally, a single Seeker pursues the elusive Golden Snitch, and catching it ends the game while earning 150 points for their team. So, where does the system fall apart? Here are ten inescapable hazards with Quidditch!

When Did Ron Join The Quidditch Team

1995-96 Angelina Johnson, now a seventh year, is made captain of the Gryffindor team. The team has played together now for a number of years and they are expected to dominate. Ron Weasley, fifth year, joins the team as Keeper. However, after the first match Fred, George, and Harry are banned from Quidditch.

Also What number is Keeper in Quidditch? The number you wear is based on which position you play on the team 1 for keeper, 2/3 for beater, 4/5/6 for Chaser, or 7 for seeker.

What does Chaser do in Quidditch? There are four positions in quidditch chaser, seeker, beater, and keeper. The chasers try to score through the hoops with the quaffle, which is a slightly deflated volleyball. The keepers try to defend these hoops from goals.

What is a quaffle in Quidditch? A Quaffle is one of three balls used in the wizarding game of Quidditch and each goal with a Quaffle is worth ten points. This Quaffle replica is made of soft EVA foam in a brown colouring and is complete with the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry logo printed in gold foil.

Players Can’t Switch Out

Now, this is contradicted by the info given in Goblet of Fire regarding a World Cup game that lasted three months, forcing players to swap out frequently. However, as the first World Cup was in 1473, and the official Ministry of Magic guideline detailing this rule wasn’t issued until 1750, it’s possible that switching was perfectly legal.

Either way, according to the 1750 statement, “No substitution of players is allowed throughout the game, even if a player is too injured or tired to continue to play.” I suppose the intent is to make getting injured by a well-timed Bludger all the more devastating, but it still seems an odd ruling, especially given how long matches can last.

What Is Blanching In Quidditch

Blatching was a common Quidditch foul that consisted of flying towards another player with deliberate intention to collide with him or her. This foul could be committed by all players. In a Quidditch match in 1996, Harper, the Substitute Slytherin Seeker, committed this foul when he collided with Harry.

What happens if someone drops the Quaffle? The Knockout Effect: Players struck by a Bludger must drop any Game Ball they are holding and return to the goals on their side of the field. They must return to their goals regardless of whether or not they were holding a ball.

Is Quidditch a real game?

Quidditch is a sport inspired by the Harry Potter book series and was developed into a real-life sport in 2005 at Middlebury College in Vermont.

How much is a Quaffle worth? A Quaffle is one of three balls used in the wizarding game of Quidditch and each goal with a Quaffle is worth ten points.

Throughout Hogwarts history, the school has seen many talented athletes, some playing professionally upon graduationwhich reign supreme? These are the ten best Quidditch players from Hogwarts!

Cedric Diggory

House: HufflepuffPosition: Seeker

Champion of Hufflepuff, Cedric Diggory was a talented wizard both on and off the Quidditch field. He holds the distinction of being one of very few Seekers to defeat Harry, catching the Snitch during their match in Prisoner of Azkaban.

True, this was largely due to Harry’s fainting from the appearance of Dementors, but it’s still one of just two instances of Harry losing . While flying, Cedric was noted to have an especially fast swerve, and his skill made him captain of the team.

Oliver Wood

House: GryffindorPosition: Keeper

Oliver Wood served as Gryffindor’s captain before Harry took over, and his eye for talent led Wood to give him the Seeker position despite Harry’s youth. This proved a wise choice, with Harry providing a powerful asset to the team

Wood was probably the best Keeper Harry ever had , and he went on to play professionally for Puddlemere United’s team.

What Quidditch Did Right

I admire J.K. Rowling’s work, and for all the fact that Quidditch contains several game-breaking attributes, it does contain its triumphs. The high-speed elements are thrilling, the varied uniforms look sweet, and it’s a sport where girls often outplay guys due to their slim figures allowing faster flying.

J.K. Rowling crafted a magical world filled with several details, and the fact that we got an entire, mostly fleshed-out sport in the package is pretty impressive. So, can we really blame her for not ironing out all the kinks? Maybe not. But does that mean the sport would run smoothly in real life? Well, not as presented in the books. But for now, as we eagerly await more adventures from the wizarding world, vote for your favorite Quidditch position, and I’ll see you at our next Harry Potter countdown!

The Second Quidditch Cup Adventure

Cheating Often Goes Unpunished

Some physical contact is allowed in Quidditch, but several moves constitute fouls, and both players and spectators are forbidden from hexing any participants. However, we witness several instances where the match proceeds despite violations. In The Sorcerer’s Stone, we see Harry jinxed , nearly falling off his broom as a result. Hagrid remarks it’s clearly dark magic, yet no one thinks to pause the game!

Sure, this wasn’t the fault of Harry’s Slytherin opponents, but if you were playing an official soccer match and your opponents had arrows shot at them by a passerby, I imagine someone would at least call a time-out. There’s also the matter of the tampered Bludger in Chamber of Secrets, Hermione’s jinxing of Cormac McLaggen in Half-Blood Prince , and Ron’s supposed use of banned luck-providing potion Felix Felicis .

Still, while the main series has ended, we’re still seeing a stream of steady prequels and sequels to fill in the gaps, and we’ll undoubtedly uncover more excellent Quidditch players. But for now, as we eagerly await J.K. Rowling’s next tale, vote for your favorite Quidditch position and I’ll see you at our next Harry Potter countdown!

The Captains Head Of House Can Revoke It

Harry Potter Quidditch Play Set: Geek Toys

Though it doesnt necessarily mean theyre the ones actually choosing the Quidditch Captain, the Head of a Captains house does have the power to take away the position, since Professor McGonagall threatens the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain with losing her captaincy if she continues misbehaving.

Because detentions do not appear to have any effect on you whatsoever! said Professor McGonagall tartly. No, not another word of complaint, Potter! And as for you, Miss Johnson, you will confine your shouting matches to the Quidditch pitch in future or risk losing the team captaincy!– Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 15

Therefore, the Head of a Captains house presumably has the authority to revoke their position on their own.
