How To Make A Diy Harry Potter Wand

Step 1: Use hot glue and beads to create structure

You may notice that we use a lot less hot glue than other tutorials. This is because the sticks themselves come with enough irregularities that you dont have to add that much extra.

Step 2: Once the glue has set, paint your wands!

I recommend 2-3 coats of paint, although Emma has been known to stop at a single coat. Bits of the wooden wand tend to show through then, but that can be a neat effect on its own.

Emma made wands for all thirty people who came to her Harry Potter birthday party! This was a lot of work, but she had some help with the painting!

How To Display Your Harry Potter Wands

Because we created these wizard wands for Emmas Harry Potter Birthday Party, to give to her party guests, I wanted a cool way to display them in the style of Ollivanders Wand Shop.

Rather than packing away the wands in their own individual boxes, I lined a wooden breakfast tray with red felt and presented each wand with its own hand written label.

It was fun imagining what wand wood material and core each wand was made of, as well as its properties. We spent a long time working out which wand would suit each party guest rememberingThe wand chooses the wizard, Mr. Potter Mr Ollivander

Oh, but do they work? Well, youll have to make your own to find out!

Diy Harry Potter Wand Making Materials

  • Sticks that you gather in your yard, neighborhood, or park. Emma is the only Harry Potter wand maker I know who uses proper sticks. Shes tried the other popular materials chopsticks, dowels, and pencils but she always returns to sticks. Sticks are harder to work with, but their unpredictability also makes for truly magical wands!
  • Low temp hot glue gun. Wand making requires a lot of hot gluing. You can still get burned with a low temperature glue gun, but it wont be nearly as bad as a high temp gun. Make sure to teach proper hot glue gun techniques before allowing children to do this, and ALWAYS supervise. Emmas top tip is to make sure you hot glue over a surface to make sure that any glue that drips falls on something that it is okay for the glue to fall on.
  • Pony beads for adding interesting shapes to your wands. Emma got the idea of adding beads from this wonderful tutorial on turning chopsticks into wands.
  • Paint. We recommend this metallic paint from Sargent Art. It is a water-based non-toxic paint, so great for kids to use. We put it in these paint cups to make it easy to paint for a while, take a break, and then paint again with minimal waste and mess. Disclosure: I requested these paints and paint cups from Sargent Art and was sent them for free to use in a project on my blog.

Ignore the glitter. Emma had it out, but decided not to use it.

Steps to Make a Personalized Harry Potter Wand

Step 1 DIY Harry Potter Wand Craft

Come up with a plan for your wand!

Its always fun to make up your own idea, or you can even try to make wands from the actual Harry Potter movies.

I did that with one of mine:

Step 2 DIY Harry Potter Wand Craft

After you have figured out what you want your wand to look like, its time to bring out the hot glue gun.

This is probably the most tedious part of the craft, especially if you are trying to make little knots in the wand like I did for the Elder Wand. These knots are created out of the glue.

Making Wand Knots and Bumps

If you want to do this, it will take a lot of spinning the wand and several additions of glue. However, you can do pretty much anything you want with the design whether it be swirls, texture, or wand handles.

Step 3 DIY Harry Potter Wand Craft

After your glue has dried, and your wand is the desired shape, now you can paint it however you like!

Dont forget to decide what type of wood its made out of and what core it has!

How Do You Find The Best Sticks For Crafting

The best rule of thumb is to not choose anything that appears too perfect. The knobs and imperfections are perfect for giving these wands a rustic and vintage feel.

But be sure to choose sticks that have tight bark! You dont want your DIY Harry Potter Wands to flake and fall apart after you spent so much time on them.

Easy Diy Harry Potter Wands With Chopsticks Or Pencils

Posted on Last updated:

These easy DIY Harry Potter wands can be made with long chopsticks or wooden tree bark pencils and without hot glue, so that young children can participate in making this Harry Potter craft.

There are a lot of DIY Harry Potter crafts on the internet for making wizard wands, but most of them use advanced materials like hot glue sticks, clay, and other materials that can make it difficult for a little child to create himself or herself.

Instead, my vision for this simple wand craft was for a group of young children at a Harry Potter party or in the classroom to be able to both determine their Hogwarts house of choice and be able to put together a unique wand inspired by that house in a short amount of time. Then, the children can play with their wands thereafter, or even use them for even more Harry Potter-inspired activities.

To make these DIY wands, I used wooden tree bark pencils and long chopsticks to form the base of the wand itself, accompanied by some easy materials for decorating the wand, including erasers, duct tape, acrylic paint pens, and washi tape, all of which you can buy quickly and easily on Amazon.

Depending on what you purchase, you can make about a dozen or two dozen wands for about $25-$30 dollars.

Below is exactly how to make these easy DIY Harry Potter wands , followed by the exact items I used to make the wands.
