How to Make Dumbledore’s 1st Wand For ~$5 or Less, from The Crimes of Grindelwald

According to the official Wizarding World website, portkeys operate in two primary ways: they activate when the user grasps them, transporting them to a predetermined location, or they’re set to transport whoever grasps them at any given time.

Theseus’ tie, which Newt passes on to him on the train, is a crucial Portkey in the film, allowing the brothers to escape from the Manticore and the German wizarding prison, Erkstag.

It’s unclear exactly how this portkey works: While Theseus and Newt both interact with it, touching it at different times in the film, it isn’t active. Still, it seems highly unlikely that the object could have been programmed to activate and transport the brothers at the exact moment that they were tumbling into a hungry beast’s lair.

The Elder Wand is the most powerful wand in the Harry Potter universe, and here’s everyone who has owned it. J.K. Rowling’s book series has become one of the biggest franchises in existence thanks to the fandom surrounding the novels and subsequent movie adaptations. The original Harry Potter franchise consists of eight movies that were released from 2001 to 2011. Warner Bros. is still making new movies set in this world with the Fantastic Beasts franchise exploring the Wizarding World several decades before Harry Potter’s story.

One of the hallmarks of the entire franchise is the Elder Wand. The origin of the famed Deathstick is born out of legend. The Peverell brothers managed to outsmart Death and were given any gift they could think of. The eldest brother asked for the most powerful wand to ever exist, so Death created the Elder Wand. The second brother received the Resurrection Stone and the youngest brother received the Cloak of Invisibility. These three objects make up the Deathly Hallows.

For over four decades, Dumbledore remained the owner of the Elder Wand and used its powers for good, educating students and protecting them from the dangers that lurk outside Hogwarts’ walls. While the Elder Wand was made from Death, Dumbledore proved that it is far more helpful in the service of life.

Is Fantastic Beasts’ Dumbledore Stronger Than Harry Potter’s

Having at least some exposure to the magical abilities of both the young Dumbledore of Fantastic Beasts and the elder from Harry Potter, it can be decided that one is stronger than the other. The younger Dumbledore is able to take on a very powerful wizard even while Grindelwald has the advantage of a more powerful weapon. However, the elder Dumbledore has gained that advantage and is able to take on Voldemort, who is even more powerful than Grindelwald.

It could be argued that the younger Dumbledore is more powerful because of his ability to duel on equal footing with Grindelwald with an ordinary wand. But the use of the Elder Wand enhances Dumbledores ability, and the elder Dumbledore has knowledge and experience that he didnt have in his younger days. So the Dumbledore of Fantastic Beasts is not more powerful than that of Harry Potters, but it also would not have been possible for the elder Dumbledore to have become so powerful were it not for the experiences of his younger self.

What Does Jacob’s Wand Even Do

Newt bestows upon Jacob a coreless wand made of snakewood, saying that Dumbledore wanted to have it.

Jacob only attempts to use it once in the film when confronting Grindelwald. In the process, he appears to summon a storm inside a dining hall, but it’s unclear exactly what’s happening Lally appears to potentially cast using her own wand as the storm materializes, so it’s possible that she may have played a role in activating the wand.

Other than that, the wand goes mostly unused throughout the film.

It’s not explained why it lacks a core , or why Dumbledore wanted Jacob to have it.

What Happened To Nagini

“The Crimes of Grindelwald” revealed that Nagini, Voldemort’s trusted serpent, was actually once a human woman who was a Maledictus, someone fated to transform into an animal. Furthermore, as Rowling clarified on Twitter, Maledictuses are always women, as the condition is a blood curse passed from mother to daughter.

But “The Secrets of Dumbledore” completely drops Nagini as a character. It’s still unclear where she went, what happened to her following the Paris rally in the second film, and what her fate is prior to eventually becoming Voldemort’s most trusted companion.

How To Make a Dumbledore’s Wand – DIY

A few years ago, when Harry Potter was less famous than it is now and very few Potterheads were lucky enough to get their hands on official merchandise, I thought it would be really cool to have Harrys wand. So I made it myself. After that, I tried several other wands from the series, and today were going to make the Elder Wand!

Sheets of paper
Scissors and a cutting knife
A glue stick and hot glue gun
Vinavil glue or transparent polish
Acrylic paint
Paintbrushes
Adhesive tape
An ink pen/black indelible pen
A ruler

Directions:

Step 1: Tape together your skewers from end to end and trim them to length. The total length should be 15 inches .

Step 2: Now take a paper sheet, cut it in half lengthwise, and glue the two pieces together to form a long strip.

Step 3: Put a small amount of glue on the corner of your sheet of paper. Place the skewer on top and wrap the paper around it, making sure to keep it very tight. If you feel the paper slipping, just put some more glue on it.

Step 4: Wrap the entire stick. When you reach the bottom , cover the skewer completely, then cut the surplus and stick down the edge with more glue. Once your stick is completely covered, it will be a uniform thickness along the length. You can then wrap it with another paper strip to give it a conical shape. Start from 2/3 of the way down the stick, and continue until you reach the end.

What Does Jacob Even Do In This Movie

At the risk of harping too much on Jacob, whose light presence is still welcome in “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” he doesn’t do much.

Mostly, he travels with Lally, and accompanies Dumbledore to Bhutan, but serves hardly any essential function in the film other than proving some of Grindelwald’s points about Muggles.

Mostly, though, other wizards say that Jacob is, in the vaguest sense possible, extremely important and that he has a good heart, without any of those claims actually bearing fruit in the film’s action.

Step 1 DIY Harry Potter Wand Craft

Come up with a plan for your wand!

Its always fun to make up your own idea, or you can even try to make wands from the actual Harry Potter movies.

I did that with one of mine:

Step 2 DIY Harry Potter Wand Craft

After you have figured out what you want your wand to look like, its time to bring out the hot glue gun.

This is probably the most tedious part of the craft, especially if you are trying to make little knots in the wand like I did for the Elder Wand. These knots are created out of the glue.

Making Wand Knots and Bumps

If you want to do this, it will take a lot of spinning the wand and several additions of glue. However, you can do pretty much anything you want with the design whether it be swirls, texture, or wand handles.

Step 3 DIY Harry Potter Wand Craft

After your glue has dried, and your wand is the desired shape, now you can paint it however you like!

Dont forget to decide what type of wood its made out of and what core it has!

The Easy But Convincing Way

a.k.a.

I want to have a good cosplay, but I dont mind some minor imperfections

MATERIALS:

Masking tape
Acrylic paints
Modelling clay, that can be hardened in an oven
Sculpting tools pointy rubber tip, metal ball tip, dental explorer tool , acrylic rolling pin or pasta maker, clay softener
Paper and printer

I chose this technique for my Elder Wand for my brother, because he is not a cosplay judge, so he doesnt need to have the wand 100 % accurate, but I still wanted the want to look very convincing and almost like a replica prop.

First I found a good referrence pictures for the Elder Wand one screenshot from the movie, one pic of a movie replica and one referrence of the inscription pattern on the handle.

I made a pattern in a vector program to have an idea about the size of the wand and position and size of the bumps. You can , or from a picture below. Print it on A4, cut and glue the both pieces together. The resulting pattern should measure around 36-37 cm.

Then I started making the wand using 3 skewers and I taped them together with masking tape on few places leaving only one skewer for the skinniest part on top of the wand.

Then I wrapped the places, where the bumps should be with and aluminium foil and taped them in place with masking tape. This step is not necessary, but it makes the whole wand a little lighter and it makes you use much less polymer clay.

Drawing On The Hieroglyphs

Nobody knows the meaning of the strange hieroglyphs on the handle of the wand, but they will hopefully be one of the easiest parts of the build to replicate.

If you haven’t got the steadiest of hands when it comes to painting, you may want to begin by giving this section of the wand another coat or two of white paint before you add the symbols.

Using a steady hand and a fine-point marker pen, carefully draw out the symbols onto the wand. Take your time with this step and remember to use plenty of reference images.

Similar to Fantastic Beasts, Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films is not often seen dueling but fights a tough opponent at the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He takes on Lord Voldemort , who is noted as the most powerful dark wizard since Grindelwald, if not more powerful. Seeming unhindered by his age, Albus displays the ability to go on both offense and defense against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. He also has the Elder Wand at this point and his already well-practiced magical abilities are an excellent match for the instrument.
