Does Hbo Max Have The Harry Potter Movies

Don't Miss

When Does Harry Potter Leave Hbo

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts | Official Trailer | HBO Max

The Harry Potter movies returned to HBO Max in September 2021 for a 12-month period. This means subscribers have until August 31, 2022, to binge-watch them.

All three Fantastic Beasts movies, however, will remain on the platform likewise, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts, which features interviews with stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson and director Chris Columbus, will continue to be available to stream.

Meanwhile, anyone with a subscription to Peacock has been able to stream them since July 1 this year.

That means all eight Harry Potter movies will have been available on two of the biggest streaming platforms in the US for two full months, by the time they leave HBO Max.

Analysis: Would Disney Plus Let Harry Potter Go

One thing we’ll always give Disney Plus credit for is that they hold onto their big movies. Disney Plus is where you watch the Star Wars movies in order, it has nearly all of the , all the Pixar movies and so on. And they’ve never allowed any to slip from their grip.

Meanwhile, this is yet another instance of the Harry Potter films which are Warner Bros. Pictures films leaving HBO Max. And this service seems like it should be the permanent home for the films, as it is under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella. Maybe some people don’t associate this film series with the studio, and therefore the streaming service, but it’s certainly odd to see them part ways .

As noted above, films leave streaming services all the time, but one would have thought Warner would see Harry Potter as an important part of HBO Max. The only reasonable solution is that Peacock probably made a compelling offer for exclusivity, which will begin once the films leave at the end of the month.

If the Harry Potter films come back to HBO Max and why wouldn’t they? we expect they’d return for the eventual HBO Max and Discovery Plus merger, as the two are meant to become a mega-service sooner or later.

Analysis: Is Warner Bros Done With Harry Potter

While it’s easy to see that Warner Bros. executives may be done with Fantastic Beasts, the studio’s commitment to the Wizarding World remains strong.

In fact, over the weekend, reports emerged in Deadline claiming that David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery , met with Potter author J. K. Rowling. That meeting, it is suggested, was about a Harry Potter TV spin-off.

Reports on a Potter TV show have been bouncing around for a couple of years now, but there’s been no details on what kind of story could be told. Rowling retains a huge amount of creative control over the franchise, and Warner Bros. can’t do anything without her sign-off.

There are always rumors about the possibility of adapting Rowling and Jack Thorne’s hugely successful stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, for the screen, and it might be easier to adapt something that’s already proven successful than create a whole new spin-off. But who knows what Rowling and Zaslav have cooked up? Whatever happens, we’re sure there’s a lot more to come from the Wizarding World.

All Eight Harry Potter Movies Are Leaving Hbo Max Soon

The entire Harry Potter collection will leave HBO Max at the end of August.

Every Harry Potter movie is leaving HBO Max relatively soon. It’s been confirmed by Variety that the entire franchise collection will leave the streaming service on August 31.

The movies set for removal include Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

While these movies are leaving HBO Max, fans in the US can still stream them elsewhere. All eight films were added to Peacock on July 1.

HBO Max debuted in May 2020 with the entire main Harry Potter series, but they quickly left the service after just 90 days and jumped to Peacock in the fall of that year. HBO Max swung back and renewed the rights starting September 2021 for a period of one year.

While the main Harry Potter series is leaving HBO Max soon, members in the US can stream the three spinoff films in the Fantastic Beasts series on the platform. Beyond those, the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary special is available on HBO Max.

Looking ahead, the new boss at Warner Bros. is reportedly interested in creating new Harry Potter content for HBO Max and took a meeting with J.K. Rowling to discuss what could happen.

Harry Potter Is Leaving Hbo Max Here’s Where You Can Watch

The Harry Potter franchise has activated a portkey and is set to leave one of its current streaming services.

The eight films are currently streaming on HBO Max, but that is set to change thanks to a previous contract agreement made before Warner Bros launched its streaming service.

This isn’t the first time the Harry Potter movies have left a streaming service. In fact, they have moved every few months since HBO Max’s launch in 2020. That’s in contrast to other films in the so-called “Wizarding World” franchise, which stays in one place while its older sister keeps moving around.

Hbo Max Is Losing The Harry Potter Movies In August

HBO Max has a lot of great stuff on the way in August, including the return of the Game of Thrones franchise in the form of prequel series House of the Dragon. Unfortunately, the service is also losing quite a few great titles, some of which belong to the same franchise. The Harry Potter films, which have been a mainstay of HBO Max‘s lineup, are set to exit the roster at the end of the month.

The August newsletter for HBO Max revealed that all eight films in the Harry Potter series are leaving on August 31st. So if you’ve got an HBO Max subscription and have been thinking about rewatching Harry Potter, now is the time to do it.

There will still be a place to watch the Harry Potter movies after they leave HBO Max. All eight films were added back to Peacock‘s streaming roster this month, so they’ll still be easy to find. Given that Harry Potter is a Warner Bros. franchise, though, expect the movies to be back on HBO Max at some point in the future.

The Harry Potter films aren’t the only titles set to leave HBO Max next month, sadly. Movies like The Dark Knight and Ocean’s Eleven are on their way out, along with a horde of others. You can check out the full list of HBO Max August departures below.

How Licensing Deals Work With Streaming Services

Where can you stream the

Basically, when a streaming service gets the rights to a film series like Harry Potter, it can happen one of two ways: either those rights are pre-negotiated when the film is in theaters, or those rights can be purchased after the fact when someone elses agreement expires. Harry Potter fans would be quite familiar with that second path, as the films used to run on Freeform for some time, after which they made a quick pitstop on HBO Gos digital library and eventually landed at the NBCUniversal lot. However, theres another interesting phenomenon weve seen happen as of late.

Either a company can buy out those particular streaming rights to its own IP, like Disney+ did with Star Wars, or special temporary deals can be hatched, such as the one that brought Harry Potter onto HBO Max for opening day. In the latter case, which is what were starting to see more of in recent times, the streaming rights were borrowed from NBCUniversal, which as of this moment has the broadcast and cable rights to the Harry Potter movies until 2025. With that agreement expiring soon, it’s back to NBCUniversal the Potter movies go, unless another agreement is drafted or Warner Bros buys back the rights to the films, whichever comes first.

The Harry Potter Movies Have Bounced Between Hbo Max And Peacock For A While Now The Game Continues

In the streaming wars, every piece of territory counts, and the Harry Potter movies represent some very valuable real estate. Warner Bros. produced the eight films, so youd figure theyd have a permanent home on HBO Max, the streaming service operated by Warner Bros. Discovery. But the movies have been bouncing between HBO Max and Peacock for a while now. At the moment, theyre available on both services, but soon enough, youll only be able to watch the adventures of Harry, Ron, Hermione and the rest of the latter service.

Per Variety, as of August 31, all eight Harry Potter movies thats Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 will leave HBO Max and only be available on Peacock, where theyve been streamable since July 1. So you have another month and change to enjoy them on multiple platforms.

Why, you might ask, cant HBO Max keep a hold of these things? It has to do with deals Warner Bros. made before HBO Max really took off. Back then, the company didnt anticipate needing to use the Harry Potter movies to draw people to its own proprietary streaming service, and so made deals with other companies to lend them out. Now that streaming is the name of the game, its surely kicking itself over those decisions.

All Harry Potter Movies Now Streaming On 2 Different Services

For many movie fans, a long holiday weekend provides a great opportunity to gather up some snacks and settle in for a marathon watch of their favorite films and for fans of the Harry Potter film franchise, they now have two different streaming services to choose from when going back to Hogwarts. As of July 1st, the Harry Potter films have returned to Peacock, making all eight films available both there and on HBO Max.

This isn’t the first time that the Harry Potter movies have been on Peacock. The films had previously been available on the streamer but left last summer to move to HBO Max on a more permanent basis. Now, the films are available on both platforms simultaneous, though it’s unclear at this time how long they will remain on Peacock. It’s also important to note that while the eight Harry Potter films are on Peacock, the Fantastic Beasts films have not made the jump. Those films are currently streaming only on HBO Max.

The Harry Potter film series stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. You can check out the synopses for all eight of the films below.
