Harry Flew Past The London Eye Before It Existed

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Return To Hogwarts | Behind The Scenes

Hogwarts is located somewhere in Scotland, but most of the time spent among Muggles in the story of Harry Potter happened in the city of London. Filming scenes in London for the Harry Potter movies was always going to be an issue in terms of creating historical anachronisms, which is likely why the film-makers never worried about them too much.

One instance where filming in London caused a chronological hiccup was during a fly-by scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, as the London Eye appears in the background. The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is meant to take place in 1998, which was when construction on the London Eye had only just begun.

There’s quite a step change for the third movie as we’re introduced to Sirius Black , who has a huge impact on Harry’s story. But it’s really the introduction of the dementors that see things getting darker, with an increasing sense of peril. At the same time, the Muggle family storyline becomes less important as Harry embraces his destiny. The film is set in 1993, but was released in 2004.

The Harry Potter Epilogue Takes Place Today Here’s Jk Rowling’s Response

ByKelly Westpublished 1 September 17

For Harry Potter fans, today has been a long time coming. When Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ended, author J.K. Rowling offered us an epilogue, which took us 19 years into the future and showed us what became of some of the surviving characters. By the book’s timeline, September 1, 2017 is the day of the epilogue.

Here’s J.K. Rowling’s official tweet celebrating the occasion…

The end truly is here! It’s also just the beginning…

Harry Potter spoilers ahead!

For those of you unfamiliar with the math, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was published in 2007, a little over ten years ago. However, the actual timeline of the story is set through the 1990s. This was figured out by a few clues, the largest being Nearly Headless Nick’s Deathday party, which took place on Halloween in Chamber of Secrets. Nick was celebrating his 500th Deathday, and on the cake, it noted his death was in 1492, making the Chamber of Secrets present day 1992. By that math, the Battle of Hogwarts took place in 1998, which would make 19 years later 2017. The Hogwarts Express picks up its students at King’s Cross Station on September 1. And here we are, September 1, 2017.

Today is the day Harry and Ginny will put James and Albus on the Hogwarts Express, joining Hermione and Ron’s daughter Rose, and Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius.

Laws Concerning Magical Creatures

In both the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the film of the same name, laws governing magical creatures are often referenced. Like any laws, these are changed over time and vary from country to country.

There are three distinct definitions for all magical creatures given in the Fantastic Beasts book, which are “Beasts”, “Beings” and “Spirits” which were defined in 1811 by the British Minister for Magic. “Beings” are defined as “any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws”.

Laws have been created surrounding the management of magical creatures, largely for the purposes of their protection, but also to protect wizards from dangerous creatures, govern ownership of certain creatures, and also to hide them from the Muggle world. In the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film, the political climate of the wizarding community at the time saw a blanket ban on possessing all magical creatures.

The Harry Potter Saga

There

This, of course, is the centerpiece of the Harry Potter timeline. Lord Voldemort’s attack upon the young Harry Potter backfired, leaving him powerless and on the brink of death. The Death Eaters were forced into retreat, and many were imprisoned in Azkaban. The wizarding world entered a period of peace – but Albus Dumbledore believed it was just the calm before another storm.

Each of the Harry Potter books and films is set in a single school year, occurring from 1991 through 1998. During this period, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger attended Hogwarts, and the threat of Lord Voldemort once again loomed on the horizon. The Dark Lord’s return truly began in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when he managed to restore himself to full power with a potion incorporating Harry Potter’s own blood. Within two years, he had once again taken control of the wizarding community in Britain. However, he hadn’t factored in Harry Potter and his friends successfully destroying Voldemort’s Horcruxes and killing him.

2017 Albus and Scorpius are sorted into Slytherin whilst Rose, as expected, finds herself in Gryffindor. Harry is now the Head of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, Hermione is Minister for Magic, and Ron manages Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley.

Albus forms an unexpected friendship with Scorpius, while his relationship with his father Harry takes a turn for the worse.

Albus and Scorpius steal a Time Turner with Delphi Diggory to save Cedric Diggory after he won the Triwizard Tournament an event that takes place in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

2020: Albus and Scorpius use a time turner to travel back to 1994 and prevent Cedric Diggory from completing the first round of the Triwizard Tournament. When they return, they realise they’ve created an alternate timeline in which Ron and Hermione never married and thus Rose doesn’t exist. Albus has been sorted in Gryffindor instead of Slytherin.

Albus and Scorpius return to the past again to stop Cedric completing the second task, and return to find Scorpius is now alone because in their alternate timeline, Voldemort killed Harry and won the Battle of Hogwarts .

In this alternate timeline, Cedric became a Death Eater who eventually killed Neville Longbottom, therefore Neville never killed Nagini, Voldemorts final Horcrux. Dolores Umbridge is headmistress, and Snape is still alive.

They return to 2020, as it was at the beginning of The Cursed Child.

Why Did Harry Potter Take Place In 1981

Why couldn’t it be in the 1940s? Were there any special events happening in 1980-1990 that relate to the story? I’m doing this for school and I couldn’t find anything.

  • 2I suspect the answer is JKR writing it in the early 90s, and setting the plot around the time of writing, though given how much she talks about HP, she might have commented in not setting it earlier in our times.Feb 28 ’19 at 0:13

  • 4Your teacher will almost certainly want you to mention that the book’s target audience will find it much easier to relate to a contemporary setting. That’s why books like Percy Jackson, Worst Witch, etc are set in the here-and-now.Feb 28 ’19 at 0:46
  • 1Hi close voters, what is primarily opinion-based in an author making a decision about when her story takes place?

The first Harry Potter book is set in 1991. There’s no deep thematic reason for that year. It’s just the year when J.K. Rowling started writing the book. Harry Potter himself was born in 1980 but that was just so he’d be eleven in 1991.

But in 1990, my then boyfriend and I decided to move up to Manchester together. It was after a weekend’s flat-hunting, when I was travelling back to London on my own on a crowded train, that the idea for Harry Potter simply fell into my head.

When Did The Harry Potter Books Take Place

I always wondered when the setting of the books was supposed to be. Is it set in the past? Present? Future?

I remember seeing somewhere that there was actual years/dates associated with events in the book.

Is there a visual timeline of all the Harry Potter events somewhere with years/months/days mentioned?

All dates in the HP world trace back to the Death Day party of Nearly Headless Nick in The Chamber of Secrets. It was stated that his it was his 500th Death Day. The cake reads:

Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpingtondied 31st October, 1492

So, it stands to reason that during the second year, Harry Potter was 12, and that it was the year 1992. All dates can be calculated from that moment in time.

It should also be noted that this isn’t strictly adhered to, specifically, Dudley has Playstation before they came out, among other things.

How The Timeline Differs Between The Harry Potter Books And Movies

Harry Potter Slytherin Bloopers, Funny Moments and Improvisations | OSSA Movies

The Wizarding World that author J. K. Rowling created for the Harry Potter series is ever-expanding. Subsequent works to the original series like the Fantastic Beasts franchise and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child fill out the world, exploring different time periods and locations where different generations of wizards existed.

But some newcomers to Harry Potter might wonder why the original Harry Potter books are set in one decade and the film franchise is set in another.

According to her website, Rowling came up with the idea for the book series in 1990 while sitting on a delayed train. She set the date for the books to match up with when she began writing them, which wound up being the same year as when the book series began, 1991. It wasn’t clear at the time if or when the book would actually be published so she used her present time period.

If you’ve read the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, you’ll notice it takes place in 1991. Harry was born in 1980, making him 11 when he starts his first year at Hogwarts. But that book was released in June 1997 and its United States version, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released in 1998. Confused yet? Well, Rowling herself confirmed in a tweet that 2017 was the year Harry and Ginny’s son, Albus Severus, was about to start his first trip to Hogwarts 19 years after Harry left, making 1998 his seventh and final year.

The Cars In Privet Drive Were Made In 1999 In The Year 1991

We never saw much of the Muggle world in Harry Potter, with the bulk of the books taking place in and around Hogwarts. The most we see of the non-magical world happens during Harrys time at Privet Drive over the summer.

The first Harry Potter movie shows us Privet Drive as its being bombarded with letters from Hogwarts. Theres a scene where we see lots of owls sitting outside of the house, much to the despair of the Dursleys. All of the cars shown on Privet Drive are Vauxhall Vectra Estates, which were not made available to the public until the year 2000, even though the start of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone takes place in 1991.

So Whats The Recommended Reading Order

Fortunately, Harry Potter isnt one of those series like Star Wars has a sprawling number of canon novels, film novelizations, reference books, and comics to read. Instead, its a finite universe which makes catching up on it much easier. We recommend reading the main series chronologically so that you can see Harry and his friends grow up. Then if youre still thirsting for more of the Wizarding World you can see where your interests most strongly lie , and start again there.

If you still havent read Harry Potter, just know that its never too late to start and even for those who have, youre never too old to go back and relive the magic.
