What Is The Harry Potter Game Like Pokemon Go

Don't Miss

Spell Energy Shatters Immersion

Pokemon Go Devs Reveal Harry Potter Game – Inside Gaming Daily

There is also the issue of how Niantic monetizes the two games. In Pokémon GO, all a player needs to play the game are Pokéballs which are found easily by walking around and visiting Pokéstops. These can also be purchased in the store using currency, however, for the most part, they are never so scarce as to be a concern. In this sense, players can pick up and go, and the game feels as it should.

Meanwhile, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite fails in this area for two reasons. First, when the game first launched, it was incredibly restrictive with Spell Energy, which is the basic unit needed to perform most actions in the game, similar to Pokéballs.

Players would soon run out, and then be asked to pay real money to cast the most basic of spells. Quickly, Niantic added a fix to the game that provides more Spell Energy, but it is still something that players need to keep an eye on all the time. This leads to the second issue, which is that it feels absolutely ridiculous having Spell Energy in the first place.

Does this mean that our Witch or Wizard character is too exhausted to cast a simple charm or curse, but suddenly feels reinvigorated after spending $4.99 to purchase gold currency and in turn buy more Spell Energy?

Pokémon GO continues to fulfill the core fantasy of an AR game from the series, but Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has yet to strike a single resonating chord, and if that does not change, it likely wont be long for this world.

What Pokemon Go Can Take From Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Here are some ideas from Wizards Unite we’d like to see show up in Pokemon Go.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the new Harry Potter game from Pokemon Go developer Niantic, has officially arrived. Given its pedigree, the title is unsurprisingly very similar to Pokemon Go. Wizards Unite is clearly built around the same style of augmented-reality gameplay , and many of the game’s elements even have direct analogs in Pokemon Go: Fortresses, for instance, are Harry Potter’s equivalent of Gyms, while Portkeys serve the same function as Eggs, among many other examples.

Despite their similarities, however, Wizards Unite also differs from Pokemon Go in a few notable ways. Not only has the game launched with more content and features than Pokemon Go had at its outset , Niantic has also incorporated a number of RPG-like mechanics that Go lacks, chief among them the Professions system. Once you reach a certain level in the game, you’re able to select from one of three different classes for your character, each of which boasts its own distinct attributes and comes with a skill tree that can be leveled up to unlock additional skills and perks.

The Real Reason Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Wins

I’m not surprised that Harry Potter Wizards Unite does a better job of implementing AR: You’d expect its maker, Niantic, to build on all it learned from its Ingress and Pokemon Go games to create a rich, refreshed experience for your phone.

But does that make it a better AR game? Harry Potter has an expansive backstory to pull from — between the original Harry Potter books and movies and the more recent Fantastic Beasts movies — and the game’s AR experience goes a long way toward creating the charm and richness of Harry Potter’s magical world on your phone.

I wonder if Pokemon Go would benefit from such an immersive experience. With the goal of catching them all, Pokemon Go is in some ways much more about tossing pokeballs and battling for gyms and not about exploring a new and charming magical world, and that’s the game’s true strength.

In thinking about the game like an epic, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite weaves the AR tightly into a universe you want to return to again and again.

How Do I Get Started

Learning the Auror profession.

To get going, create your wizarding avatar. Use your phone’s camera to snap a photo of yourself. You can then outfit it with witch and wizard garb.

While cooperative play makes up a big part of the game, your avatar isn’t automatically shared with others and is saved just to your device.

The game lets you pick your Hogwarts house and choose your wand. But don’t agonize over your choices: You can switch houses and wands at any time. If you’d rather be sorted into a house than choose one, head over to the Harry Potter official website and have the Sorting Hat place you.

You also choose a profession — an Auror, Magizoologist or Professor — which each offer job-specific skills and abilities you upgrade to as you go. As with houses and wands, you’re not locked into your profession.

On your game map, you’ll see magical buildings, supplies on the ground and glowing magical traces that signify someone or something displaced by what the game calls the Calamity. The buildings include Inns, where you collect wizarding foods to use as energy for spells, and Greenhouses, where you gather potion-making ingredients. You can also find potion-making materials on the map, including items that appear only in distinct biomes and during different weather conditions.

Along with Inns and Greenhouses, you’ll find Fortresses on the map. A bit like a Gym in Pokemon Go, a Fortress is where you join forces with up to four other players to dispel magical creatures and Death Eaters. You battle in real time with the other players in a shared arena. After you defeat one opponent, you can move on to another until the Fortress is cleared.

The map, with points of interest.

But the main attractions are the magic traces you discover on the map. “Magic always leaves traces, sometimes very distinctive traces,” Professor Albus Dumbledore told Harry. It is true in the books and movies, and it’s true in the game.

The magical traces are items the unexplained Calamity has displaced from elsewhere in the wizarding world, past or present. Each trace points to a pair of items: a “Foundable” and a “Confoundable.”

And finally, you can find on the map and then use a Portkey to transport to an immersive VR-like magical location to explore and gather supplies.

Will Scarlet And Violet Have A Greenish Brethren Someday

What made Pokemon such an innovative concept upon its release is how it encouraged players to interact with one another in an age before the internet. This came about with two versions of each game, each featuring different Pokemon on offer.

So with each Pokemon game tasking players with catching them all, players who truly wanted the complete Pokemon experience had to interact with another player who had the opposite version of their game.

This went so far as requiring certain Pokemon to only evolve via trading. But for those who missed the boat on the initial two versions, the Pokemon Company also offered a third version of the game, one that combined elements of the first two versions.

For a while, intrepid players would just wait for the more expanded third iteration of a Pokemon generation, but since Generation V, this practice has been phased out. With Generation IX on the horizon, should Pokemon bring back this third-edition tradition?

The Power of Three

The practice of having a third edition came with the Japan-exclusive Pokemon Blue, which came after Pokemon Green and Red with general fixes throughout. This was the version that the English versions of Pokemon Blue and Red were based on.

No More Trios

Generation V bucked the trend by having full-blown sequels with Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, which are not merely different editions but rather continuations from the events of Pokemon Black and White.

Harry Potter: Wizard Unite

Niantic Studios and Warner Bros Games have released Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, their latest game, and its the game that most closely resembles Pokemon Go.

Players can cast spells, find intriguing items, and interact with iconic characters and legendary monsters from the Harry Potter universe while visiting real-world locations.

The gameplay is also similar, and you must battle mythical animals from the Harry Potter universe. The game lets players select their wizarding house, wand, and profession: Professor, Auror, or Magizoologist.

When you initially start playing the game, you must design an avatar, and the players geographical location also determines its placement.

Furthermore, this is one of the best games like Pokemon Go.

Gyms Or Greenhouses: Structures In Harry Potter Give You More To Do

A Portkey transports you to a mysterious room you can walk around.

The Harry Potter: Wizards Unite map is dotted with inns, greenhouses, fortresses and even banners warning of dark-arts traces, and they all provide jumping-in points to the game. Tap an inn, for example, and you’re whisked into an AR dining room to gather food and replenish your energy to cast spells.

Inside the structures, dinner platters float, potted plants rotate in front of you, and you feel a bit like you’ve entered a magical room. And when you place a Portkey, you’re transported to a room in the Borgin and Burkes shop in Knockturn Alley. In this AR room, you can move around, walk up to and examine objects and gather five Wrackspurts to earn rewards.

Pokemon Go, with its pokestops and gyms, has fewer structures to engage with, and of the two, only gyms really feel like you’ve entered a room, to battle Pokemon. I can spin pokestops in my sleep.

Winner: Harry Potter: Wizards Unite offers a more diverse AR experience and feels more realistic. If the only new bit of AR the Harry Potter game offered was the room you reach via a Portkey, it’d be worth it.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is the latest offering from Niantic Studios and Warner Bros Games. The game is perhaps the most similar game to Pokemon Go. Players can visit real-life locations while casting spells, discovering mysterious artifacts, and encountering iconic characters and legendary beasts from the Harry Potter universe.

The gameplay is similar as well. You have to fight against the mythical beasts from the Harry Potter world. Players have the ability to choose their wizarding house, their wand, and their profession: either Professor, Auror or Magizoologist.

When you play the game for the first time, you have to create an avatar. Its location depends upon the players geographic location as well. Then you have to go out and find confounded items and creatures, and unconfound them. Just like Pokestops, players can stop at inns , greenhouses , and fortresses .

You can download Harry Potter: Wizards Unite for both Android and iOS.

Pokémon Go is an Augmented Reality game which was launched by Niantic Studios, some years ago. Just after the launch, the game shook the entire mobile gaming market. For starters, in Pokémon Go, you have to go outside and search for Pokémons using your mobile.

Unlike traditional mobile games, the game encouraged people to get out of their rooms and explore the world around them. Soon, there were tons of people on Pokestops and other popular Pokémon breeding places. This game was the point because of which AR Games picked up some steam.

Now with powerful processors and long batteries, AR Games have become more detailed and complex. The in-game physics are more realistic than ever. And were very excited to share with you the top AR games which are similar to Pokémon Go.

Harry Potter Game From Pokmon Go Developer Is Shutting Down

Wizards Unite will close in January 2022.

Wizards Unite, the Harry Potter mobile game from Pokémon Go developers Niantic, is closing down.

The app plays a lot like its Pokémon cousin, with players finding magical objects and creatures out in the real-world. While no-one would have expected it to capture the lightning in a bottle success of Go‘s launch, which was a worldwide phenomenon, outlets paint a very bad picture overall: $40 million revenue since its 2019 launch, versus Go making $1 billion in 2021 alone so far.

Within its first 24 hours of release, it was installed on 400,000 devices, which paled in comparison to the 7.5 million installations of PokémonGo on its first day.

“The game will be removed from the App Store, Google Play and Galaxy Store on December 6, 2021, and players will no longer be able to make in-game purchases as of December 6, 2021… We are incredibly thankful to every single person in our amazing community of witches and wizards for adventuring with us out in the real world.”

The blog explains that they won’t offer refunds on purchases that have already been made, so if you’ve got any in-game currency in Wizards Unite, you’ve got a month to use it.

When Is It Coming Out

The game is out now in the US for iPhone and Android devices, coming to the UK on Friday, June 21, and to international territories soon after. Niantic has been beta testing the game in New Zealand and Australia.

Jonathan Knight, Studio Head of WB Games San Francisco, promises that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be a deep role-playing “forever game,” with the Calamity forming a multiyear story arc.

At the event, I may have seen a bit of the arc. During the briefing I saw a quick reference to “The London Five,” four Ministry of Magic workers and one “Daily Prophet” reporter who are missing. The missing five didn’t appear during gameplay but may show up at some point in the story.

In fact, the “Pokémon GO” creators at Niantic tried to capture lighting in a bottle a second time back in 2019 with “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite,” an AR game that allowed fans of the Wizarding World to visit real-world locations while casting spells, discovering mysterious artifacts, and encountering iconic characters and legendary beasts from the magical franchise. Unfortunately, the game never caught on in the same way that “Pokémon GO” did, and now Niantic will be closing up shop on the title in 2022.
