At the ripe old age of 82, Newt Scamander was awarded the Order of Merlin, Second Class thanks in part to his contributions to the field of Magizoology. Considering his lifetime of travel, research, and work with the Ministry of Magic, it makes sense that Newt is one of the more prized members of the magical community. The medal and distinction was inspired by Merlin himself and first handed out by the high wizard court, the Wizengamot, in the 1400s. There are three tiers to it, with wizards like Dumbledore achieving the highest level. Interestingly, the Third Class seems to denote the idea of expanding wizarding knowledge. Is it possible that the role Newt will play in helping to battle Grindelwald and his forces in the Fantastic Beasts sequels will lead him to be bumped up to Second Class?
Either way, the Order of Merlin wasnt the most prestigious accolade ever granted to Newt. He also obtained a coveted Chocolate Frog Card. Introduced in the first book and film, Chocolate Frogs are a treat enchanted to hop about when you try to eat them. But in Crimes of Grindelwald, when Grindelwald offers several wizards the choice to join his forces, Nagini resists, even as her friend Credence aligns himself with Grindelwald. Its still unclear whether Nagini will go to the dark side or whether Voldemort will somehow enslave her after shes permanently turned into a snake.

Rowling Wrote A Real Version Of Fantastic Beasts For Charity
In between the existence of Fantastic Beasts as an in-universe textbook in the Harry Potter book series and its subsequent adaptation into the film of the same name, J.K. Rowling actually wrote a real-life version of the tomeor rather, Newt Scamander did. Back in 2001, Rowling not only wrote, but illustrated and hand-lettered a version of Fantastic Beasts for the charity Comic Relief using the pen name of Scamander. Not just any version, the book is meant to be a recreation of Harrys own copy from 1991. In it, there are all sorts of notes scribbled in by Harry and Ron. The section on classifications, for example, features a note by one of the boys next to the XXXXX entry. Reserved for the most dangerous creatures of all, or anything Hagrid likes is added in the margins, referencing the caretakers proclivity for deadly beasts.
The book also features a foreword by Albus Dumbledore, and alludes to a number of creatures that would go on to play a role in both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchise, like the Erumpet. Luckily, anyone can get a copy of one of these books, as theyre now sold along with Rowlings two other in-universe pieces of literatureQuidditch Through the Ages and The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Newt Scamander isnt without a superpower of his own, he is a wizard after all, but his autism, be it Aspergers Syndrome or something else, is not connected to it in any way. The fact that Newts apparent autism isnt remarked on in the film is actually quite fitting for the time period of the film.

His Mother Bred Hippogriffs
Born Newton Artemis Fido Scamander in 1897, not much is know about Newts family or early childhood. What we do know is that he had an older brother named Theseus and that his love of magical creatures stems from his mother. Mrs. Scamander actually bred hippogriffs for a living, giving the young Newt his earliest exposure to fantastic beasts and how to care for them.

Notably, at the end of Crimes of Grindelwald, Newt and Dumbledore discuss how Dumbledore and Grindelwald swore not to fight one another.
Instead of making an Unbreakable Vow, the two made a Blood Oatha new concept for Harry Potter fans. Considering that Dumbledore and Grindelwald do eventually fight, a Blood Oath is presumably breakable, unlike an Unbreakable Vow.

Heres what we do know: Newt was expelled for endangering human life, but Dumbledore, then the Transfiguration Professor, advocated to let him continue his education. Dumbledore was a young teacher at the time Newt was expelled.

Was Newt Scamander Actually In The Harry Potter Movies
Though he’s made his live-action debut this month with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander has always had a small presence in Harry Potter. He wrote the textbook on magical creatures eventually used by Harry himself, a book that would go on to be the first magical book available for Muggles to read . But some astute fans have noticed that Newt was actually in one of the Harry Potter movies, if only for a second. He’s never onscreen physically, but his name can clearly be made out on the Marauder’s Map.
The above picture is specifically from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when Fred and George Weasley first show Harry the Marauder’s Map. The map, which shows the current location of every person in Hogwarts, displays the name Newt Scamander, who is somewhere inside the castle. The names surrounding his are too difficult to make out, but that might not be important. This could be nothing more than a fun easter egg — the real-life Fantastic Beasts book was published a few years before this movie came out — but that hasn’t stopped some fans from creating their own theories as to why Newt was visiting Hogwarts.
Newt’s name could be nothing more than a harmless easter egg, but it’s always fun to speculate these things, even if it’s only head-canon. Though he’s not physically in any of the Harry Potter films, you can watch Newt Scamander take the lead in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is currently in theaters right now.
They Are Not Entirely Unalike
While Newt and Harry might have been very different people, we think they would have got along quite nicely if they were around at the same point. For starters, Harry and Newt both protected the underdog no matter what. For Newt, it was his magical creatures and at times Jacob, while Harry was Hagrids fiercest supporter whenever he got a little too Hagrid about any of his creatures.
The pair also had the support of Dumbledore, who was clearly an excellent judge of character to trust them both, despite the level of mischief they each got up to at Hogwarts. Although were not sure why Newt was expelled , its clear that both he and Harry barely toed the line during their time at Hogwarts. We’re actually still pretty surprised that Harry was never given the boot, to be honest!

Leta Lestrange Has A Future In The Franchise
The canon is a bit contradictory on whether Newts expulsion from Hogwarts was ever enforced. Because of that, its not clear how much of his young adult life was spent with Leta. Given that Newt still keeps a picture of her with him 13 years later, its probably safe to assume that their relationship, whatever it entailed, continued for some time after the two were classmates. Director David Yates has said Lestrange and her family history will play a role in the upcoming films, but its the photo itself that provides the biggest clue to Letas importance.
Though we get but a glimpse of it in the movie, the woman in the picture is actually Zoë Kravitz. The actor is best known for her roles in Dope, Mad Max: Fury Road, and as Angel in the recent X-Men franchiseand for being Lenny Kravitzs daughter. Due to her prominence as a performer, it would be unheard of for her to have simply posed for the photo if the producers werent planning on her showing up in a future installment of the franchise. Whether her inclinations led her down the dark side like her progeny, were likely to learn more when Fantastic Beasts 2 arrives.
Who Did Queenie Goldstein Marry
While initially on the same side as her sister Tina and friend, later brother-in-law Newt Scamander, Queenie was ultimately swayed to join Gellert Grindelwald’s side with the offer to be free to love and marry her No-Maj boyfriend Jacob Kowalski, as well as the offer to provide his freedom to others.

At Odds With The Ministry
For as highly as Harry and Newt think of Dumbledore, they think the opposite of the Ministry of Magic, who is also conveniently out to get Dumbledore. In the battle between Dumbledore and the Ministry, a battle that carries on for decades, Newt and Harry have a clear side.
For Harry, it was more a battle of misinformation, as the Ministry never believes him about Voldemort, and thus he is pushed away as the boy who lies. For Newt, he finds them all as careerist hypocrites, whose solution to everything problem is to kill it.

Harry’s Friends Helped Him Grow As A Hero But Not As A Wizard
Harry Potter was always destined for greatness as the Chosen One meant to defeat Lord Voldemort. However, just because he was The Boy Who Lived didn’t mean he was predisposed to be one of the best without some assistance. Harry was no different than any other student at Hogwarts, aside from his history, but what helped him achieve greatness were the friends he made along the way. Not only did he have Dumbledore and Sirius Black on his side, but he also had Ron and Hermione, who offered up book smarts and heart to spare. As a result, Harry was never without someone to call on when he needed it most. In fact, without them, he likely would never have made it as far as he did.

While Harry’s friends undoubtedly helped him grow as a wizard, he was far from perfect. Harry was a competent wizard and duelist, but he wasn’t nearly as clever as Newt. As a result, he was able to conjure spells that could save his life, but because he was forced to fight while in school, he was often guided through some of his deadliest challenges by tools like the Resurrection Stone and Cloak of Invisibility. As a spell caster, he could hold his own just enough, but his usage of spells wasn’t nearly as second nature to him as Newt. Because of this, Harry’s heroism wasn’t based mainly on his magic skills.

Let’s look into some reasons which may have driven Newt Scamander to a brief Hogwarts’ visit.
Newt Scamander, the protagonist in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, made a mysterious blink-and-you-miss cameo in the Prisoner Of Azkaban movie that left all Potterheads baffled.
