  • About The Harry Potter Series

Basically the seven Harry Potter books are fantasy novels written by a British author, J K Rowling.

The books are about the adventures of a young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. The three are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The three friends are eleven when the first book begins and nearly eighteen at the end of the final book in the series.

The main story arc involves Harry’s quest to overcome the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort, who seeks to conquer the wizarding world, subjugate non-magical people and destroy all those who stand in the way of his becoming immortal. The books tackle many themes, among them prejudice, the power of love, corruption, death, friendship, loyalty and good vs evil. They also involve elements of mystery, romance and adventure, woven together in a series of quite complex subplots.

The first book in the Harry Potter series was released on June 1997. It was followed by six further books, all of which have been hugely popular around the world, selling over 450 million copies.

“Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter ‘H’.”

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry’s eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

  • The Harry Potter Series

The Harry Potter series by J K Rowling is brilliant to read aloud to your child but when’s the best age to start?

My husband started reading the first Harry Potter book – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – to our twin sons when they were six. .

This was in 2001 when everyone was first talking about the books and the four of us were keen to find out what all the fuss was about.

And for our two at least, six turned out to be exactly the right age to start reading the Harry Potter series. The boys absolutely loved reading a chapter a night and their dad and I also loved discovering the story with them.

Each Harry Potter book is just a little bit more complex than the one before. For our boys and for millions of other kids around the world, this meant that they were pretty much growing up with Harry and his friends as they read their way through the series.

We read the first three books aloud as a family and have some very special memories of these times. My daughter was only three when we were reading them but she snuggled up on the bed to listen too and the experience seems to have inspired in her a life-long love of all things Harry Potter.By the time Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire came out in 2005, my boys were eight and keen to tackle it on their own. The only problem was, they both wanted to be the first in the family to read it!

    Showcase Your Book Love:

At home, we went to a Harry Potter Halloween event. We went to a Harry Potter-themed day at the museum. Harry Potter summer camp? Yep, coming up.

And the merchandising! Great Hall LEGO set? Check. Robes and wands? Check. Funko Harry, Ron, and Hermione figures? On display. Harry Potter Trivia? Has made her an expert . Wand coding kit for iPad? Yup.

Some of this weve indulged, and some of it has been gifts. She adores it all.

Andright or notI must admit to a greater willingness to indulge these desires because they are attached to a book series.

    Moving On And Whats Next

I think actually finishing the series was bittersweet for both of us. Toward the end, we really looked forward to it every night and couldnt wait to find out what happened next. We were reading for up to an hour at a time .

We went on to read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child after finishing the regular series. It was nice to have some continuation of the story, but Im not sure either of us loved the script format.

We also watched one of the Fantastic Beasts movies . I didnt follow it very wellmaybe it would have helped to read the books first.

She watches all of the movies regularlyespecially if shes home sick.

Her younger sister, who is now five and has long found Harry Potter to be too scary, has now requested to start reading them as well. Dad is reading them this timeslowly, like we didso soon the whole family will be immersed in Harry Potter.

As for my oldest, she and I still read aloud every night. We are now on the fourth book in the Little House on the Prairie series. The discussion topics are different and the pace is slower, but shes enjoying them. I think the slower pace is a good thingnot all books are filled with magic and wizards and dragons, and thats okay.

Well need some other books to read soon, and I hope to dive into more of the middle grade books Ive been eyeing.

She is also reading the Harry Potter series again, on her own this time. I would not be surprised if Harry Potter becomes a comfort read for her, like it has for so many others.

    The Harry Potter Films

The Harry Potter books have been made into eight films which were released between 2001 and 2011.

The films star English actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the leading roles of Harry Potter and his best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

The films are terrific for adults and for children although, as with the books, they get progressively darker and more scary with more adult themes as you progress through the series. With that in mind, it can be a good idea to watch them yourself before you introduce your younger children to them.

The Harry Potter Series: Ages And Stages

The first three Harry Potter books are great to read aloud to kids aged from about six or seven up. Certainly most children – both boys and girls – will love them from the age of eight.

If your eight-year-old is a fairly capable reader, he or she will probably be able to read the first three books independently. Remember though, that it can be fun to read aloud to older children and the Harry Potter books are great for this purpose because most adults enjoy the stories too.

The last four books are long and quite complex. Certainly many ten-year-olds will be quite capable of reading them but again, I think they’re great for reading aloud to kids aged up to about eleven.

Most teens will enjoy reading the books and in fact the seventh and final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is probably not suitable for readers under about thirteen. And if your teen does want to read the whole series, there are editions with more adult-looking covers so they’re not embarrassed to be seen reading what they probably think of as kids’ books.

The seven books in the Harry Potter series, in order, are:

Managing The Scary Parts Of Harry Potter

Theres no denying that Harry Potter is scary.

Hogwarts and the wizarding world at times feel full of whimsy and imaginationand they arebut they are also full of darkness.

Family members die. Creatures suck out souls. Enormous spiders and snakes creep in the shadows and walls. Adults are cruel to children. Evil lurks in those you think you can trust.

    Its a lot.

But its also balanced by that whimsy, and by characters who truly work for good. Characters who are loyal to one another, no matter the danger. Characters who share their wisdom and look out for each other.

As I mentioned above, my daughter was truly terrified of Voldemort. Some of the other elements were scary to her, but none topped him. I thought the dementors would be a problem, but she hardly mentioned them.

So we talked about the things that scared her. About the people who helped and supported Harry when he faced dangerhe was almost never alone. And how bravery isnt about not being scared, but about facing your fears even when you are scared.

We also talked about how the different people around Harry supported him in different ways. This was one of my favorite outcomes of our discussions, because she started telling me which characteristics she loved about different characters. She found the things that made them special, and they werent all the same.
