Which Harry Potter Book Has The Marauder’s Map

The Map Was A Single Piece Of Unfolded Parchment

Interactive Marauders Map Guide to Hogwarts Book Review

Unlike the movies where the Marauders Map has been shown to be a folded and layered piece of parchment, with parts of the Hogwarts Castle showing up in different sections of the map, the map in the books is a single piece of blank parchment that could be laid atop a table.

Unless the incantation, I solemnly swear that I am up to no good is spoken, it remains blank. Although it seems quite impractical for a map of such kind to be a single piece of parchment, given Hogwarts Castle is such a huge place, it is what the books explain it to be.

The Map Had Blind Spots And Inaccuracies

Despite being an extraordinary piece of magic, the Marauders Map has its shortcomings. The first shortcoming includes the two blind spots. In spite of accurately mapping every corner of the Hogwarts Castle, the map is unable to plot the Chamber of Secrets, as well as the Room of Requirements. The fact that none of the Marauders were Parselmouth, limited them from ever finding the Chamber of Secrets. The Room of Requirements magic protected it from being detected. Thereby, these blind spots are quite understandable.

However, another baffling shortcoming of the map is its inability to distinguish between generations if both the people have the same names. This was showcased when Harry notices Barty Crouch in Snapes office, without realizing that it wasnt Barty Crouch Sr. but actually his son Barty Crouch Jr..

Harry Potter Filmmakers Reveal The Most Complicated Thing In The Movies

When designing the “Harry Potter” universe on screen, everything had to be consistent. It’s an elaborate world, and just one slip could ruin the magic.

But there was one major problem the filmmakers faced over and over again: the series wasn’t finished.

Half of the “Harry Potter” movies were made before J.K. Rowling finished the books. So when some things were introduced early in the story, it wasn’t clear how they’d be important later on.

One complicated prop in particular needed to reveal a lot more: The Marauder’s Map. It’s a magical map of Hogwarts’ grounds that reveals the location of everyone on it.

The Map first appears in Harry’s third year at Hogwarts. In “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” Harry uses it to discover Peter Pettigrew, the man who betrayed the location of his parents to Lord Voldemort. But it’s useful, and Harry ends up using it in his later years at Hogwarts.

Miraphora Mina, co-founder of the graphic design firm MinaLima, was one of the three people who designed everything in the “Harry Potter” movies. She didn’t anticipate the scope of the map’s importance after “Prisoner of Azkaban,” or how to show parts of Hogwarts that weren’t known be known in earlier films.

She solved the problem by making it a little more magical.

Here’s what the map looked like in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” at the 47 second mark:

How Lupin Became A Werewolf

Fenrir Greyback is also a werewolf and is mentioned in the Harry Potter films in reference to the scars on Bill Weasley’s face. For book readers, the name Fenrir Greyback will be even more menacing, as he was also the werewolf who bit a four-year-old Remus Lupin, infecting him as a werewolf for the rest of his life.

What Is The Marauder’s Map

Image

The Marauder’s Map is a magical item in the Harry Potter novels, taking the form of a map of Hogwarts which reveals the location of everyone inside the castle, along with secret passageways. Given the large scale of Hogwarts, the map represents quite a feat, especially as certain parts of the castle, such as the moving stairways, seem to change at whim. The map originally appears in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and plays an important role in that and every subsequent book.

Harry’s father, James Potter, was one of the makers of the Marauder’s Map. The Marauder’s Map appears to have been inspired by the nighttime wanderings of the friends James Potter, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and Remus Lupin, a werewolf, and represents mastery of highly advanced magic. Clearly Potter, Black, and Pettigrew are capable of skilled magic, as the three became Animagi so that they could accompany Lupin when he transformed into a werewolf. As Animagi, the three boys were capable of changing into various animals, so that Lupin in his wolf guise would not attack them.

How Sirius And Lupin Knew Each Other

In the movie, Harry, Ron, and Hermione have every right to be furious with Lupin when he enters the Shrieking Shack and embraces Sirius like a brother. What may be confusing to the trio, as well as audience members, is how Lupin knows Sirius well enough to embrace him when he’s mostly just been following Peter Pettigrew on the map. The pair, obviously, didn’t just go to school together. They shared a dormitory in Gryffindor Tower and were part of an inseparable group of troublemakers.

Special Abilities Of The Map

The map isenchanted to insultSeverus Snape if he should ever come into possession of it and attempt to use it. It did this when Snape confiscated it from Harry Potter and attempted to discover what information it contains, but it simply insulted him as an ugly git. Snape is able to make use of the map later during the 19931994 school year after finding it abandoned in its activated state on the desk of Remus Lupin, who had left it upon spotting Peter Pettigrew in the Shrieking Shack. It is not clear if Snape would have been able to activate the map himself, had he known how.

The map also shows how to access the sealed passages by showing the password required to unseal it . More importantly, the map shows the name and location of every person within the Hogwarts grounds, even if they are wearing an Invisibility cloak , transformed animagi , or under the influence of the Polyjuice Potion .

The Map Has Been In The Possession Of Several People Throughout The Books

The Marauders Map has changed hands on numerous occasions throughout the course of the books. While it originally belonged to the four Marauders, it was soon confiscated by Argus Filch. The Weasely twins stole the magical map from Filchs office and used it for a couple of years, before gifting it to Harry Potter. Harry Potter lost the map when Severus Snape caught him snooping around the Hogwarts Castle one night. Before Snape could take it, Remus Lupin took the map from Snape, reassuring him that he would investigate the parchments dark secrets.

Lupin gave the map back to Harry at the end of the school year, who used it in his fourth year at Hogwarts, till lending it to Barty Crouch Jr., or fake Moody. Harry must have stolen the map from Moodys office because he is seen using it during the fifth and sixth years. Apart from other people like Hermione and Ron using the map as well, as revealed in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Minerva McGonagall also uses it to save Albus Severus Potter.

Why They Stopped Trusting Each Other

In the third Harry Potter movie, it is never made clear how close Sirius and Lupin ever were. This is also why the film never digs into how they fell out with one another .

But they were close, and they fell out only a little bit before Peter Pettigrew betrayed Harry’s parents. As both Sirius and Lupin were members of the Order of the Phoenix, they knew there was a leak in the organization. Because Lupin was a werewolf, and because Voldemort had been offering full rights to werewolves, Sirius suspected that Lupin was the leak.

All The Marauders Were Gryffindors

If you didn’t know the names of the Marauders, movie viewers were also unaware that all four were members of Gryffindor house. The four were shared a dormitory while at Hogwarts, obviously leading to their close friendship and their work together to create the map in the first place. When reexamining the Prisoner of Azkaban film, this also explains why Professor McGonagall was so well informed about Sirius and his background at school when she speaks with Madame Rosmerta and Cornelius Fudge.

Don’t Miss: What Point Of View Is Harry Potter

James Potter = Bully Who Never Really Changed

Yeah, agree about James Potter being a bully before and even after he started dating Lily Evans. Its like he never really changed. Look at what Sirius Black says in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, book 5 of the HP series by J.K. Rowling:

Once James had deflated his head a bit”

A bit. Its just a bit. James only deflated his head a bit so it seems like he just toned down his bad/horrible/despicable attitude/behavior especially whenever Lily Evans was around so that shed think that she was able to change him or that he changed especially for her. But, with the way James continued to act, it seemed like not even love could change him. Or is that actually possible in his case? Is it really possible for him to be able to change and stop bullying in such a short period of time especially when hes been bullying people for years?

Why The Mraduers Are Said To Be Bullies?

Or why the popular opinion about the Marauders is that theyre horrible, despicable bullies. Ive to agree with . The Snapes Worst Memory scene in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix really served to show just how bad the Marauders were, just how terrible they can be . This scene showed them as bullies / antagonists / villains instead of the protagonists / good guys that they supposedly are.

Why Didnt Remus Lupin Talk To Sirius Black

Remus Lupin is a werewolf and the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, book 3 of the HP series by J.K. Rowling.

Sirius Black is the godfather of Harry Potter and the best friend of James Potter . He was wrongly imprisoned in Azkaban for crimes he didnt commit. Why does Remus Lupin need to talk to Sirius Black? How come he didnt do that? Lets discuss the issue in story format:

Alfred frowned at the post title. Is this related to the last post Cy? I dont think I want to discuss this. Its an insult and mockery to friendship.

James Potter = The Cruel And Vicious Bully?

I agree with especially considering what weve seen in the Snapes Worst Memory scene in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

reacted so fast it was as though he had been expecting an attack.

The above quote implies that this isnt the first time that the Marauders tried to bully and humiliate the Slytherin. It sounds like theyve been harassing Snape for years. Its not just Severus though. According to Lily Evans, James also had the tendency to:

down corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can Im surprised your broomstick can get off the ground with that fat head on it. You make me sick.

Even Remus Lupin says that James tended to people just for the fun of it. Furthermore, consider the following:

Reason Why Remus Lupin Left The Maraduers Map

As soon as Lupin saw Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew and everyone else on the , he left his room right away to go to the Shrieking Shack. But why did he just leave the map lying around where anyone could walk in and see it? He could have at least cleared it or hidden it somewhere where prying eyes wont see it.

He really should have known to do this by now since hed had much experience with the item in question from his own school days. Surely, he wasnt that forgetful or neglectful? At the very least, shouldnt he have locked his rooms and made sure that no one else could get inside?

Wasnt that the logical thing to do especially in a school where some curious children might decide to wander around and peek into the teachers rooms or something? Do you think that Lupin should not have forgotten to either hide the map or lock his room or could this inaction of his be somehow excusable?

The Map Was A Christmas Gift To Harry Potter

It is interesting to note that the Marauders Map was actually a Christmas present from the Weasely twins to Harry Potter. As revealed in Chapter 10 of Prisoner of Azkaban, it was during the December of 1993 that Fred and George cornered Harry and presented the map to him, saying that he needs it more than they do.

They further explained that they have practically exhausted the usage of the map and do not require it anymore. It was meant as an early Christmas present, and apart from being a fitting gift the map also aided Harry Potter on numerous occasions in the future.
