Harry Potter: 15 Characters That Look Nothing Like They Do In The Books

Harry Potter: What Slytherin Characters Should Really Look Like

They might have given great performances, but these Harry Potter actors don’t fit J.K. Rowling’s character descriptions very well.

No page-to-screen adaptation is perfect . There is so much to translate in terms of story, character, and setting, and sometimes something that works on the page might not be quite as exciting on the big screen. When it comes to the Harry Potter series, there was no shortage of changes made in creating the film franchise. Whole characters and subplots were cut out to keep the films at a reasonable length. In some cases, J.K. Rowlings beloved characters wound up looking a whole lot different, too.

There are a lot of reasons why some of the physical characteristics of these HP characters may have been altered. The casting directors for The Sorcerers Stone couldnt have predicted what the child actors would grow up to look like, for example. Plus, oftentimes, it likely came down to who was best suited for the role, not who looked most like the characters. Still, some of these differences ended up being pretty noticeable for eagle-eyed fans. Here are 15 Harry Potter Characters That Look Nothing Like They Do In The Books.

Artist Shows What Harry Potter Characters Were Actually Meant To Look Like In Real Life

8:35, 21 April 2022 BST| Last updated 8:35, 21 April 2022 BST

An artist has created her own illustrations of characters from the world of Harry Potter.

When you get stuck right into a book, you form images of what you’re reading in your head: the people, the places they travel, the fights. Your imagination can feel like the best cinema in the world when you find a story you love.

So, when that book is turned into a movie, it’s unsurprising that some fans struggle with the transition, holding the source material close to their hearts.

MsBananaAnna, a 28-year-old Vietnamese artist, used artificial intelligence to create character portraits based on their descriptions across the books.

For example, Bellatrix Lestrange is described as having ‘long shiny thick black hair, strong jaw, dark hooded eyes, thin lips, gaunt from long term imprisonment, still has vestiges of old beauty’.

Meanwhile, Cedric Diggory is supposed to have ‘very handsome chiseled features, dark hair and grey eyes’.

The artist shared her portraits to Imgur, showing the likes of the Weasley family, Severus Snape, Cho Chang, Remus Lupin, Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, Dolores Umbridge, the Dursley family, Draco Malfoy and, of course, the main trio: Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Speaking to Bored Panda, self-confessed ‘nerd’ MsBananaAnna said she’s been a complete ‘Potterhead’ since her early years in school.

Remus Lupins First Line Is About Dementors

First appearance: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Professor Lupin is sleeping in a train car on the Hogwarts Express when Harry, Ron, and Hermione first see him.

The new professor wakes up when the Azkaban Dementors board the train, and he produces a Patronus to save Harry from the Dementors Kiss.

In the movie, he doesnt speak until after Harry has recovered some from the attack. He hands the young wizard a piece of chocolate and says, Here, eat this. Itll help. Its all right. Its chocolate.

But in the book, Lupin wakes up a little earlier, when the train first stops for the Dementors, and tells the students, Quiet! and Stay where you are.

What The Harry Potter Characters Look Like Based On The Books

I decided I wanted to do a photoshop of what certain characters looked like in the books vs the movies only to Google search “book descriptions of Harry Potter characters” only to find out that it had already been done by BuzzFeed two years ago.

Bummer. However, I decided do my own take on it, mainly because I felt the photoshop edits made of these characters could have been done better

For right now I’m going to work on doing all the major characters from the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, adding them as I finish them. I may move on to character’s from the other books when I’m finished and make a separate gallery for each book. Who knows?

Harry And Sirius We Are Family

One of the saddest parts of the Harry Potter series, which is a really sad series at times, is just how little time Harry and Sirius had to spend together. It was only two years from the time Harry discovered his Godfather to the time he was ended. In that time, moments like this were all too infrequent. That’s what makes this piece of fan art so special.

The close bond between Harry and Sirius is evident here, as is the protective nature of Sirius Black in general. You can tell how much trust and appreciation there is for one another. The splatters of paint here give it an added layer of emotion, knowing how tragically their relationship would end. Scenes like this are sure to inspire fondness for the pair in any fans of the series.

Viktor Krum In Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

A spartan haircut for a spartan guy. Krum really pulls this off, and it fits his rigid character and his lifestyle as a quidditch superstar. Plus, the ladies love itHermione agrees to go to the Yule Ball with him, and during the entire Triwizard Tournament, girls chase him like hes Justin Bieber.

Hermione In Full Color

This vivid full-color portrait of Hermione Granger is one of the most colorful and striking pieces of the young Gryffindor to be found online. The color of her eyes and hair shines brightly as if a real light had been caught in them. This is heightened by the splotches of white, giving the whole picture an illuminating quality. The castle looming in the background gives us a slightly darker contrast to top it all off.

We see Hermione here as simply a young student, as she would be on any typical day in Hogwarts. As many ways as one could portray this character, I personally like the simplicity of this one. Hermione is an intelligent and caring woman. She’s a leader, a protector, a loyal friend, and a brave fighter, but she’s also a student just like any of her friends in school. This is a piece as suitable to the famed character as any other could be.

Altogether In Diagon Alley

What should the cast of Harry Potter really look like?

Last but by no means least on our list of awesome artwork, we have a mix of some of our favorite characters mingling and laughing together in Diagon Alley. It’s a warm-hearted picture celebrating the happier times that Harry and his friends experienced together. Every corner of this piece has a familiar face to look at and everyone is expressing themselves in their own unique way. As dark and terrifying as things get in the world of Harry Potter, scenes like this are what make fans love the world for everything that it is.

Fanart is a creative celebration of works we admire. When we imagine new ways of experiencing the characters we’ve invested our hearts in, this is the kind of result that we can get. As long as there are people creating and means of sharing, we’ll always have more work like this to enjoy.

Dolores Umbridge Was Played By Imelda Staunton

Senior undersecretary to the minister for magic and temporary Hogwarts defense against the dark arts professor, Dolores Umbridge was played by actress Imelda Staunton.

Before joining the “Harry Potter” cast in “Order of the Phoenix,” Staunton rose to fame appearing in “Much Ado About Nothing” alongside Thompson, “Sense and Sensibility” alongside Thompson and Rickman, and “Shakespeare in Love” alongside Williams.

The English actress also found success on the stage in West End productions of “The Beggar’s Opera” , “Guys and Dolls” , and “Into the Woods” .

While filming the remaining “Harry Potter” movies, Staunton appeared in a few TV series and worked on “Alice in Wonderland” alongside Bonham Carter and Rickman.

Ron Weasley In Harry Potter And The Half

Did you know that the alternate title of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was Harry Potter and the Much Cooler, Much More Popular Friend? OK, I made that up, but it could really be called that! Ron is the fucking man in this movie. Hes schooling Slytherin in quidditch hes wearing clothes that Harry Styles would wear he has multiple girls fawning over himLavender Brown and Hermione, who is so busted up by her unrequited love that she uses magic to hurt Ron with little paper birds and hes rocking the best haircut he ever had in the entire series.

Bellatrix Lestrange In Her Element

Possibly the most sinister and demented witch among the Death Eaters, we see Bellatrix Lestrange here digitally painted in all her dark glory. The green hue of magic we see swirling around from her wand perfectly fits with the kind of magic we might actually see emanating from the woman. You can clearly see the wickedness inside of her eyes and smile here as well.

Bellatrix is clearly some sort of high-functioning sociopath.

There is no question that she enjoys inflicting pain and has little to no remorse for anyone. As one of the scariest of the group, it’s fitting to see her surrounded by darkness and clearly comfortable there. Slight gray splatters emitting from around her upper body give her an eerie kind of glow. If you’re ever facing a sight like this in person, it could very well be the last thing you ever see.

Albus Dumbledore Was First Played By Richard Harris

What These HARRY POTTER Characters Should Actually Look Like

Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts’ Headmaster, in “Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Chamber of Secrets.”

At the time, Harris was a well-established actor best known for roles in films like “Camelot” , “Juggernaut” , “Gulliver’s Travels” , “Unforgiven” , and “Gladiator” .

He also appeared in “The Pearl” and “The Count of Monte Cristo” in between the first two “Harry Potter” films.

Staunton Has Continued Her Successful Career On Stage And On The Screen

Staunton went on to appear in “Maleficent” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” alongside Davis, and voice a character in “Paddington” and “Paddington 2” alongside Walters and Gambon.

On TV, she’s played Karen Edwards on ITV’s “A Confession,” Mary on ITV Hub’s “Flesh and Blood,” and, most recently, Penny on the Apple TV+ series “Trying.”

Staunton will also be taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth II starting on the fifth season of Netflix’s “The Crown.”

The actress continued working on the stage with West End productions of “Sweeney Todd” , “Good People” , “There Came a Gypsy Riding” , “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” , and “Follies” .

She is currently working on the upcoming film “The Canterville Ghost” and she’s set to star in the now-postponed West End production of “Hello, Dolly.”

It’s A Gryffindor Victory

It’s a celebration! There’s no Harry, Ron, and Hermione here though. Instead, we’re taken back to an earlier time and an earlier version of the Gryffindor house that we haven’t often seen. Dedicated fans may have noticed the two in Quidditch jerseys as the young James Potter and Sirius Black.

That’s right, this is a painting of the older generation celebrating during their school days.

Also in the picture, we can see young versions of Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and even a young Lilly Evans. There aren’t very many moments in the books or movies where we get to see these characters together like this. There certainly aren’t any moments as cheerful as this one. It’s nice to see the group looking so happy together, especially knowing the grim fates each of them has met. The warm colors and happy faces really give this piece an uplifting feeling.

Draco Malfoy In Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Young Draco has amazing hairstyles, ones that have been adopted by hipsters and young fascists the world over. But Im singling out his look in Chamber of Secrets because its truly weird . Like, his hair was not this sickly yellow in Sorcerers Stonenor was it ever that color again. But it works for Draco, heightening his presence as a yuppie-wizard-bully and adding a certain magnetism to the character. Hes a real punk and you should hate himand his haircut makes that extremely easy.

Why Harry Potter Is So Good

J is one of the main reasons the franchise continues to grow despite its many ups and downs. A little bit of herself by Rowling herself. In one of her books, she managed to capture the hearts of readers everywhere through a magical world. Also, her characters were believable to the end of the story since they had enough personality to appeal to the reader.
