The Ending Of Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban Explained

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire Beginning of the third task

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban changed the game for Harry Potter fans. Not only was it the first movie not directed by Christopher Columbus, but the story in both book and film form introduced characters and mythology that would impact Harrys battle with Voldemort all the way through to the final installment. Its also very complicated, with Time-Turners, scenes from multiple perspectives, and big reveals that have fans frequently shifting their allegiances.

Prisoner of Azkaban seems to follow a few different plot threads: Sirius Black has escaped the wizard prison Azkaban, and everyone assumes hes out to kill Harry. Hogwarts also has a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Lupin, and he is super weird about the moon. Hagrids hippogriff, Buckbeak, is about to be executed for scratching Malfoy. Rons pet rat Scabbers is missing, presumed eaten by Hermiones cat Crookshanks. And theres a big dog out there that may portend death. All these threads seem independent, but they converge at the Shrieking Shack, delivering an ending to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban that provides deep commentary on the series themes.

Short Stories From Hogwarts Of Power Politics And Pesky Poltergeists

Not everything about Hogwarts and the Wizarding World is bright and shiny indeed, the series has birthed some of most memorable villains in literature, from Dolores Umbridge to Lord Voldemort himself. Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Potergeists delves deeper into this darker side of Harry’s universe: in particular, it’ll walk you through the politics of wizards and the backstories of Hogwart’s villains, like Profess Umbridge.

    Flight Of The Fat Lady

    • While the book has Peeves describe Sirius Black’s attack on the Fat Lady’s portrait after learning about this from her when he saw her in a portrait on the fourth floor, in the film it was the Fat Lady herself that described the attack from a nearby portrait.
    • In the book, while Harry cannot go to Hogsmeade and stays with Lupin, they spend their time in his office and Harry sees a Grindylow which Lupin was taking delivery of for their next lesson, while in the film, they are talking on the Wooden Bridge after apparently meeting there. This difference creates a continuity error in the seventh film when Lupin interrogates Harry after the Battle of the Seven Potters holding his wand to Harry’s face and asking him ‘what creature sat in the corner the first time Harry Potter visited my office in Hogwarts.’ A deleted scene is assumed to show this, before the two of them went for a walk on the Wooden Bridge.

    Special And Visual Effects

    Heartbreaking Reason Rupert Grint Doesn

Industrial Light & Magic and Framestore handled the key visual effects shots for the film, while The Moving Picture Company, Cinesite, and Double Negative crafted additional VFX material.

Cuarón originally wanted to move away from CGI toward puppetry. He hired master puppeteer Basil Twist and experimented with underwater puppets to figure out the movements of dementors. The tests were shot in slow motion, but ultimately the method wasn’t practical. The water test footage provided creative direction for the visual effects team, adding the intangible metaphysical quality Cuarón was seeking. Visual effects supervisors Tim Burke and Roger Guyett, the Industrial Light & Magic VFX team, and Temime collaborated in the creation of dementors.

Cuarón commented on the difficulty of creating Buckbeak, which took months of research and preparation, beginning with the creature’s skeletal design. Cuarón said, “Once we worked out the physiology, the way his bones would actually move, we had to capture his personality, which is a mixture of regal elegance, particularly when he is flying, and the clumsy and greedy creature he becomes back on land.” Creature effects supervisor Nick Dudman created several practical hippogriffs for the production, while Burke and Guyett oversaw the creation of the computer-generated version. Guyett cited the complex movement of the feathers as an achievement that had “never been done before.”

    Hermione And Cheering Charms

In The Prisoner of Azkaban book, Hermione is upset when she finds out she’s missed Cheering Charms. She misses the lesson because of her time-turner, as she’s using that magical object to sit multiple classes at once. She ends up telling Harry and Ron she’ll talk to Professor Flitwick about her absence, feeling guilty about missing such an interesting lesson.

But, given time-turners allow users to go back up to five hours, she could have merely sat in the lesson and corrected that wrong. Maybe she felt cautious about using it too much, especially due to Minerva McGonagall giving her strict orders to keep use and knowledge of its existence to a minimum, but this goes down as another error for the third book.

Rowling Regretted Giving Harry The Marauders Map

In Prisoner of Azkaban, the Marauders Map is introduced as a way for Harry to track Sirius Black and learn of the survival of Peter Pettigrew. But this plot device proved problematic for Rowling later on this series. In Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide, she wrote, The Marauders Map subsequently became something of a bane to its true originator , because it allowed Harry a little too much freedom of information. She went on to say that she sometimes wished she had made Harry lose the map for good in the later books.

    Verne Troyer As Griphook

The casting of the Harry Potter films was limited to British thespiansa rule so strict it even forced producers to turn down Robin Williams for the role of Hagridbut Verne Troyer became the rare exception when he was cast as the Gringotts banker Griphook in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Troyer was the only American actor with a major role in the film, but the character was voiced by his English co-star Warwick Davis, who also portrayed Professor Flitwick and another bank teller in the film.

By the time Griphook became more significant to the story in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Davis took over the role completely. Davis later explained his decision to seek out the role. “Griphook has so much more depth to him than I’d ever been able to get into my work as Professor Flitwick. So, I went in and read for David Yates and the casting director, and gave them a best shot, David left a message that I’d got the part.”

Derek Deadman As Tom The Innkeeper

The Leaky Cauldron’s chief barkeep Tom went through a sizable transformation between his first appearance in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and his return for another Diagon Alley moment in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. His hair was all gone, for one thing, and he looked a lot less stout.

The reason is that actor Derek Deadman did not return to the role for film three, and it was filled by Jim Tavare. Though Deadman was an accomplished actor before stepping into the world of witchcraft and wizardry, he largely left the movie scene after the first Harry Potter and only appeared in one film afterwards before passing away in 2014 from complications associated with his diabetes. Although it’s unclear whether Deadman chose to step away from the role, incoming director Alfonso Cuaron did want to darken up the atmosphere in Azkaban and even instructed Tavare to play the role like Igor from Young Frankenstein, which may mean that Deadman’s chipper persona was no longer a good fit.

    Fantastic Beasts 3 Plot

Following the comparative disappointment of The Crimes of Grindelwald, Warner Bros seemed to acknowledge they had some extra work to do on the Fantastic Beasts 3 plot.

The second film didnt perform as well as the first, but I think we know what we need to do to get the third film hopefully even better than the first one, Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara admitted to the Los Angeles Times in February 2019. And J.K. Rowling is really working hard now on that third script, and were going to get it right. She has an incredible vision of where she wants to go with this that is incredibly exciting.

The hardest part of the franchise is you have such a big core fan base. That fan base really knows the lore and they want to go deep into these characters. But what you dont want to do is intimidate people. You want to be able to create a standalone movie thats enjoyable for someone who isnt steeped in the lore.

This time around, J.K. Rowlings getting extra writing assistance from Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one of the Potter movies . Theres also plenty of experience behind the camera, where David Yates helms his seventh wizarding adventure, after four Potters and the first two Fantastic Beasts.

Lets just say I really ought to be able to spell Rio de Janeiro properly, given how many times Ive written/typed it in the last few months.

    Fantastic Beasts 3 Controversy

The Crimes of Grindelwald had the lowest box office in the history of the Wizarding World, and was arguably the least popular with cinema audiences. But the new movie has even bigger challenges to face if its going to be a success theres so much Fantastic Beasts 3 controversy out there right now that it could put an Avada Kedavra curse on the saga.

J.K. Rowlings controversial Twitter posts and 3,800-word essay about the transgender community have attracted extensive backlash from Harry Potter fans, with Wizarding World stars including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Eddie Redmayne publicly distancing themselves from the . Johnny Depp was involved in a libel case that made lots of unsavory allegations about his private life and was later kicked from the movie.

Meanwhile, the casting of Korean actress Claudia Kim as Nagini was considered by many to be racially insensitive , and many are upset that Dumbledores much-talked-about romantic relationship with Grindelwald has been invisible on-screen. The franchise has turned into something of a magnet for negative headlines.

So, if all the Fantastic Beasts 3 controversy stops the movie doing the business at the box office, this could be one five-movie franchise that stops at three At least we’d have the Harry Potter TV show to look forward to. For more, check out our list of the best Netflix movies.

    Richard Harris As Dumbledore

Although there are still plenty of Harry Potter fans who prefer Richard Harris’ depiction of the Hogwarts headmaster, the role was recast ahead of the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, after the two-time Oscar winner passed away in 2002 from Hodgkin’s disease. Harris had expected that he might not be able to carry the character, which he took to please his granddaughter, to its cinematic end. He told the press, “I’ll keep doing it as long as I enjoy it, my health holds out and they still want me, but the chances of all three of those factors remaining constant are pretty slim.”

The part would eventually go to Michael Gambon, who starred in all six of the films to follow, but he wasn’t the first major British star who was invited to don the heaping wig and decadent cloaks. Years after the fact, Sir Ian McKellen revealed that he, too, had a shot at becoming Albus Dumbledore but turned it down. He later explained on BBC’s HARDtalk, “When they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the Harry Potter films, they didn’t say in what part. I worked out what they were thinking, and I couldn’t take over the part from an actor who I’d known didn’t approve of me.” Harris was reportedly unimpressed with McKellen during his life, implying that he was a “passionless” actor. Even so, though, McKellen added that he sometimes saw himself in the posters of Gambon as Dumbledore.

Below, we decided to just include everything Harry Potter-related that its possible to watch right now including the stage play, The Cursed Child.

That means each of the seven books in the Potter series focus on a different school year , starting in 1991, when Harrys 11 years old.
