Th And 19th Centuries
During the 18th century the Deans of Durham often held another position in the south of England and after spending the statutory time in residence, would depart southward to manage their affairs. Consequently, after Cosin’s refurbishment, there was little by way of restoration or rebuilding. When work commenced again on the building, it was not always of a sympathetic nature. In 1777 the architect George Nicholson, having completed Prebends’ Bridge across the Wear, persuaded the dean and chapter to let him smooth off much of the outer stonework of the cathedral, thereby considerably altering its character. His successor William Morpeth demolished most of the Chapter House.
In 1794 the architect James Wyatt drew up extensive plans which would have drastically transformed the building, including the demolition of the Galilee Chapel, but the Chapter changed its mind just in time to prevent this happening. Wyatt renewed the 15th-century tracery of the Rose Window, inserting plain glass to replace what had been blown out in a storm.
In 1847 the architect Anthony Salvin removed Cosin’s wooden organ screen, opening up the view of the east end from the nave, and in 1858 he restored the cloisters.
There is also a statue of William Van Mildert, the last prince-bishop and driving force behind the foundation of Durham University.
The Basic Human Values
On a theoretical level, we stipulate that the decisions made by the Sorting Hat are more strongly based on an individuals values rather than on personality traits. This hypothesis is based on human values being more closely aligned with House descriptions as reflected in the Harry Potter books. According to Schwartz , the relative importance of multiple values one holds guides actions, distinguishing the existing values by the theoretical model from one another by the goal or the motivation they express . Therefore, we aim to investigate whether identification processes could relate to the theory of Basic Human Values . Additionally, values are thought to be universal across cultures, and the theory of Human Values may be a useful framework for understanding a persons identification with fictional elements. To our knowledge, the relation between Human Values and the identification with fictional elements has not been explored in the literature before.
Ginny And Harrys Relationship
Harry and Ginny had no chemistry on screen, and the movie does a pretty bad job of leading up to their relationship. Ginny’s fiery spirit is a perfect match for Harry. The fact that Harry likes Ginny is subtly hinted at throughout a couple of the books, culminating in their relationship at the end of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Harry breaks up with Ginny to protect her while he goes hunting for Horcruxes, but of course they get back together. The only time the movie really hints at their relationship is that awkward kiss in the Room of Requirement, and it’s not an accurate representation of their relationship at all.

What If Barty Crouch Jr Didn’t Teach Harry
Say Lord Voldemort hadn’t used Barty Crouch Jr during his plan to get Harry Potter to Little Hangleton Graveyard during the Goblet of Fire, but still managed to transform the cup into a Portkey. How would that have gone down?
We’re just guessing here but, chances are, it wouldn’t have been the Boy Who Lived traveling to the graveyard. Harry only won the Triwizard Tournament because he had Crouch Jr, impersonating Alastor ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody, helping him.
It’s the Death Eater who nudges him towards flying in the first task, and him again who ensures Harry use Gillyweed in the second. As for the third and it’s Crouch Jr who eliminates most of the obstacles in his path. Without him, it’s unlikely Harry would have got anywhere near the prize.
Aunt Marge’s Big Mistake
- In the book, at the dinner party, Aunt Marge allows Ripper to drink tea off of a saucer. In the film, she allows him a drink of brandy from her glass.
- In the book, Aunt Marge stays for a couple of nights before she gets blown up. The film makes it seem she blows up the same day she visits.
- In the book, Harry sat at the table with Aunt Marge and the Dursleys, but in the film, he is just busy at the kitchen counter serving the Dursleys and Aunt Marge.
- Also in the book, Marge only floats up to the ceiling, while in the film she uncontrollably floats out of the house, later to be found circling a chimney in Sheffield.

We conduct a similar analysis as above for the Human Values data; Figure shows the raw data. Table displays the posterior model probabilities. Harry Potter fans can be assigned to one of these Houses by filling out an eight-item questionnaire available on the Pottermore website . Crysel et al. asked Pottermore users to complete the Sorting Hat Quiz as well as to answer questions regarding their personality traits such as the Big Five and the Dark Triad . The authors report significant associations between personality characteristics and House affiliation in line with the depictions in the book; for instance, they found that Slytherin House members scored higher on Dark Triad traits. This viewpoint may be substantiated by the results of Crysel et al. , who found that the Sorting Hat Quiz is related to established personality traits. The Letters From No One
- Dudley appears to know about Hogwarts, as he stares worriedly at Harry like his parents do. In the books, Dudley does not know about magic when Harry gets his letter.
- The scene when Harry gets Dudley’s second bedroom is omitted. He does get the room in the second film, with the latter film implying that the Dursleys supplied Harry with the room after the First Year.
- The scene where Harry and the Dursleys go to a random hotel to get away from the letters was omitted from the film, so instead they went straight to the hut.
- Because of this, Dudley’s line of “Daddy’s gone mad, hasn’t he?!” was moved to immediately after Uncle Vernon declares that they are going to move far enough away to ensure that the owls can’t find them. In the book, Dudley says this line only after Vernon pauses driving long enough to do a glance around to see if any owls are following them on a bridge.
The Journey From Platform Nine And Three
- In the book, Fred & George met Harry at the platform and helped him loading his trunk to the train. Post this they tell the rest of their family at the platform about this. They later appear with Ron in the train and introduce the two boys. While in the film, Ron introduces himself and finds about Harry in the train for the first time.
- In the book, Harry first learns about the connection between Dumbledore and Flamel on the back of his chocolate frogs card. In the film, it is Hermione who comes across the name in a book she picked up for ‘light reading’. In a deleted scene however you see Harry finding the name on a chocolate frog card after which the trio runs off to the library, so it only appears as a “mistake”.
- In the book, Neville comes into the compartment where Harry and Ron are sitting asking if they have seen his toad, which was omitted. Later Hermione shows up again with Neville asking the same question. In the film, Hermione shows up by herself asking if anyone has seen a toad, and that a boy named Neville has lost one.
- In the book, Draco Malfoy visits Harry with Crabbe and Goyle in the train compartment to meet the famous Harry Potter. This is where he insults the Weasley family and asks Harry to be his friend. When Harry declines, a fight breaks out. This scene is omitted in the film.

The Lightning Struck Tower
- When returning from the cave, Harry and Dumbledore appear on High Street in Hogsmeade, where they encounter Madam Rosmerta, who warns them that the Dark Mark has appeared over the Astronomy Tower. Harry and Dumbledore borrow her broomsticks and head up there. In the film, Harry and Dumbledore Apparate there directly. There is a dark, uneasily tranquil feeling conveyed as views of various parts of the school are shown, as though something bad would happen at any moment. However, the Dark Mark is not cast over the school until after Dumbledore’s death.
- Harry is not frozen by Dumbledore as in the book, rather, Dumbledore instructs Harry to go and hide below, and not to speak or be seen by anyone. Harry hesitantly obliges and goes down to the floor below the top of the astronomy tower looking up through floorboards at the events. In the book, he remains unnoticed the whole time, while in the film, Snape catches Harry in the tower, and persuades him to stay silent, before going upstairs to kill Dumbledore.
- In the book, Amycus Carrow finds Draco with Dumbledore, and he pressures Draco to kill Dumbledore. In the film, while Amycus is still present, it is Bellatrix Lestrange, who is not among the Death Eaters present in the book, encountering Draco and pressuring him to kill Dumbledore.

Gryffindor: Harry Potters House
Being that Harry Potter was placed here, this is one of the most influential houses at Hogwarts.
While you may think that the symbol of Gryffindor would be some kind of griffin, thats not the case. Its actually a lion, which is still pretty close.
It approximately correlates to the fire element, making scarlet one of its main colors.
The gold color relates to this as well as to its lion nature, as well as the firey mane that a lion has.
Gryffindor emphasizes typical heroic and fantastical knighthood traits, such as chivalry, courage, and daring.
This particularly relates well to the lion imagery.
However, sometimes its such an extreme that its members move towards a reckless and short-tempered nature.
Some of this behavior was seen with the Weasley twins with their various pranks and antics.

In this case, its Nearly Headless Nick, who lived during the 15th century in Britain.
Hes nearly headless due to a rough decapitation, which occurred because he accidentally made Lady Grieve grow tusks instead of straightening her teeth.
Since he was sorted in Gryffindor at Hogwarts, he became its ghost.
His head sometimes wobbles over since its still barely attached to his body.
The common room is in the Gryffindor Tower, which would be more congruent if their animal was an actual griffin.

- In the novel, Snape appears in the Shrieking Shack after pulling off the Invisibility Cloak, but in the film, as the trio didn’t bring the cloak with them, Snape appears visible and is seen when he disarms Sirius.
- Also, in the film, Snape disarms Sirius with Lupin’s wand since Lupin passed it to him when Sirius was so wanting to kill Pettigrew. In the novel, Lupin never gave his wand to Sirius, so Snape never disarms the latter.
