In October 2016, Rowling announced that the Fantastic Beasts film series would be composed of five films, later confirming that the story of the series would consist of a sequence of events that occurred between the years of 1926 and 1945. In February 2022, producer David Heyman revealed that work on the script for Fantastic Beasts 4 had not begun yet. In April 2022, Variety reported that Warner Bros. greenlighting the final two installments would be dependent on the critical and commercial performance of The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Credence Barebones True Origins Change How We See The Dumbledore Family
Fantastic Beasts 3 contained a significant plot twist: Albus isn’t the only Dumbledore with secrets, because Credence Barebone is a secret Dumbledore. As Albus discovered, Credence Barebone is actually Aurelius Dumbledore, the son of Aberforth Dumbledore , Albus’ brother. This makes Credence/Aurelius Dumbledore’s long-lost nephew, and the three Dumbledore men coming to terms with this truth is a vital theme of the movie’s final act.

While it does end somewhat happily, with Credence/Aurelius and Aberforth reconnecting, it opens up many questions. Aberforth is mentioned only once in the books. Still, in no Harry Potter medium has Dumbledore ever spoken of a nephew, much less one with ties to evil wizards like Grindelwald and an uncanny resemblance to Severus Snape. If Fantastic Beasts returns for a 4th and 5th installment as planned, audiences will probably be seeing a lot more of Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore and what happened to make him the wise, stoic, fiery man portrayed by Michael Harris and Michael Gambon by the time Harry Potter sets foot in Hogwarts.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
When Warner Bros decided to turn Rowling’s slim pamphlet into a sprawling multi-movie franchise, it could be seen as a return to the magic or cynical moneymaking sorcery. And thanks to off-screen controversy the Fantastic Beasts series has sputtered like a wonky wand.
But we will say this: the first film is decent. It gives fans and casual viewers a chance to enjoy the fantasy without being stuck in twee boarding school world, and the expanded look at Rowling’s wizarding world comes with delightfully colorful creatures and a dandy retro fantasy vibe.
It’s also really well-cast: Eddie Redmayne is great as Newt Scamander, a big screen hero whose character is defined by gentleness, curiosity and compassion instead of violence and aggression. Katherine Waterston and Ezra Miller provide intriguingly off-kilter support, and Colin Farrell is such a smolderingly seductive baddie it’s a real shame Depp took over. Jacob Kowalski is put in charge of one of Bunty’s enchanted suitcases and when Grindelwald’s henchmen open it, it is revealed to contain only pastries. But then touching Jacob’s buns make them multiply in great numbers, mimicking the same enchantment placed on Helga Hufflepuff’s cup in Bellatrix Lestrange’s vault in Gringotts.

Aberforth Dumbledore’s Magic Mirror Foreshadowing
The reveal that Credence Barebone is actually Aberforth Dumbledore’s son in Secrets of Dumbledore doesn’t entirely work with the Crimes of Grindelwald’s twist, but it is a more satisfying end to his story. Their relationship is revealed throughout the movie with an unprecedented link that sees them communicating between enchanted mirrors, writing messages on the frosted glass. While it’s a slightly different variation on the theme, it foreshadows Aberforth being Harry Potter’s secret guardian angel through Dumbledore’s enchanted hand mirror in the mainline movies. All-in-all, it’s a good way to make Credence’s Dumbledore twist feel more part of the world.
A Battle Of The Seven Potters Call
In the climactic sequence set in Bhutan during Fantastic Beasts 3‘s ending, Dumbledore’s plan involves Newt’s assistant Bunty getting 4 identical duplicates of his travelling case, in order to hide the Qilin. It’s a ruse all Harry Potter fans are familiar with thanks to the Battle of the Seven Potters from the opening of The Deathly Hallows. In that sequence, the Order of the Phoenix attempt to confound Voldemort by presenting him with 7 identical Harrys to mask the real one.

Best: The Qilins’ Birth
Dumbledore and Grindelwald are two of the most compelling, mysterious, and utterly confounding characters in the Wizarding World franchise. With their epic plotline that has played out in these three films, it’s easy to sometimes forget that the series is called “Fantastic Beasts” Newt Scamander and his little critters often have felt like an afterthought.
“The Secrets of Dumbledore” brings the creatures back to the forefront of the story, making their appearances integral to the rapidly-darkening overall storyline. “Harry Potter” has always been heavy on mythology, and the Qilin’s mythos in “The Secrets of Dumbledore” is directly tied to the film’s upcoming election. Qilin are born when a new leader is about to rise, after all. In the new movie, these creatures aid in choosing the leader of the magical world, bowing to someone worthy of the title.
While being integral to the story, the Qilins’ birth is also a stunning, impactful moment for the franchise as a whole. Best: The Movie Ups The Political Ante
Both the “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” movies are inherently political in nature, given that they feature dictators rising to power. Yet, since the original series took place at a school filled with youngsters, it prevented fans from diving too deep into the politics of it all. Now, with adult characters hailing from various countries, “Secrets of Dumbledore” offers the most in-depth look yet at wizarding politics and how an election is held.
The film explores ancient rituals for determining new leaders, with such elements as the introduction of the Qilins. The tie-in offers a magical touch to the politics that we never saw when Cornelius Fudge was busy being aloof in the original films. The movie also rectifies the second film’s mistake of glamorizing Grindelwald with new quotes that blatantly say, in effect, dictators are bad.
While Anton Vogel makes the awful move of clearing Grindelwald of all charges , his quote that “A peaceful transfer of power marks our humanity” certainly speaks to the highest ideals of politics.
But Grindelwald has no plans to do that. Dumbledore warns that dangerous times favor dangerous men and says, “The world as we know it is coming undone. Grindelwald is pulling it apart with hate.”
Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
Order of the Phoenix had a lot of memorable moments. Some were fun, like Arthur Weasley vibing in Muggle world, and others were tragic, like the death of Sirius Black. The film also featured one of the franchise’s better villains in Dolores Umbridge. But to me, the film was significant for being the first time visual effects technology caught up to the story Harry Potter was trying to tell. The duel between Dumbledore and Voldermort in the Ministry of Magic? That’s worth a million Galleons.

Harry Potter And The Secrets Of Dumbledore
If you’ve been keeping up with all things Harry lately, you undoubtedly heard the “news” that the beloved by millions wizard Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledoor is in fact gay. The announcement came from the mouth of the author herself, when she answered a planted question from a fan about whether or not Dumbledore ever finds “true love.” Rowling replied that Dumbledore is gay and in love with a rival wizard named Gellert Grindelwald.
I think my response to that question might have been something like “No, he didn’t find true love, because y’know, he’s DEAD!”
According to news reports, the audience at Carnegie Hall both gasped and applauded at this revelation. You might say there was a rainbow of responses not only from them, but across the ‘net and beyond. Everything from “go gay pride!” to “Rowling and her evil agenda” has been declared and discussed so much you almost wish you could wave a magic wand and make it all go away.
But evidently it isn’t at least not the subject of homosexuality anyway. There are gay/lesbian clubs in schools, scientists searching for the “gay gene,” and the word “homophobe” has worked its way into common use. This is why Christians need to approach this “in your face” cultural component with a perfect balance of love and truth.
Fact #1: Homosexual behavior runs contrary to God’s design for sexuality, and is therefore a sin.
Fact #2: God’s design for sexuality comes from His desire for us to enjoy life.
Why Harry Potter Recast Dumbledore
The answer to anyone questioning “why did they change the Dumbledore actor?” isn’t a happy one. Despite his hopes to return as Dumbledore, the actor sadly passed away from Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 72, a few months after asking Cuarón to hold the role. The Harry Potter film series was then tasked with recasting the role of Dumbledore in the hopes that the next actor could stick around for the remainder of the franchise. Harris’ tenure as Dumbledore was iconic and tragically brief. Recasting the role was a delicate process that required a great deal of care and attention to ensure the cinematic change was as smooth as possible.

Worst: Even Before He’s Born Snape Is Romanticized
The romanticization of Snape and Dumbledore was bad enough in the “Harry Potter” series when Harry named his son Albus Severus after “the bravest men he ever knew.” Having watched the films and read the books, fans know that although both Snape and Dumbledore had their moments, Snape only turned away from Voldemort’s murderous mission after killing Lily, a woman he essentially stalked for years.
Prior to his redemption, Snape was perfectly content to let Lily’s son and husband die at the hands of daddy dictator Voldemort. So, his rebellion against Voldemort wasn’t exactly noble he even went on to bully his supposed love’s son for seven years. Yet, despite Snape’s incel behavior toward Lily and his selfish, obsessive love for her, fans still romanticize the word “Always.” The line comes in the seventh book and film when Snape uses his Patronus in front of Dumbledore. When Dumbledore sees that Snape’s Patronus is still Lily’s stag, he asks, “After all this time?” Of course, Snape replies, “Always.”
Cut to “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” when Aberforth meets his son Credence , who asks, “Did you ever think of me?” Aberforth says, “Always.” Not only is it an unnecessary nod to Snape, but it’s also more proof that Aberforth knew about his son and did little to nothing to find him. In some ways, at least both characters kind of suck.
Newt And Tina Were Reunited
Tina and Newt might have spent most of the film apart, but it was clear that she was always on his mind. The photo of her in his suitcase proved that. It was no wonder he was so happy to see her at Queenie and Jacobs nuptials. When she arrived to fulfil her duties as Queenies Maid of Honour, they had a rather cute interaction outside of the bakery before being rudely interrupted by the arrival of Lally and Theseus.

The Origin Of Harry Potter’s Golden Snitch
After Quidditch was dropped from the Harry Potter movies, it briefly reappears in Fantastic Beasts 3 as the first Hogwarts sequence opens with two Seekers chasing a Golden Snitch above the school’s towers. Later, one of the enchanted suitcases in the Bhutan sequence contains a set of Quidditch balls, with the Bludger wreaking havoc. During the sequence, Dumbledore retrieves the Snitch and puts it in his pocket: could this be the same Snitch that would later become so important in the Harry Potter movies? After all, Dumbledore was a sentimentalist and he could have chosen to use the same Snitch in Harry’s first Quidditch game as was used to help take down Grindelwald.
What Is Right And What Is Easy Calls Back To The Goblet Of Fire
Fantastic Beasts 3‘s political plot is based on the importance of Gellert Grindelwald being elected the Supreme Mugwump as Head of the International Confederation of Wizards. In order to stop that happening, Dumbledore initially approaches outgoing leader Anton Vogel and tells him through Newt to do “what is right, not what is easy”. This calls back directly to Dumbledore’s speech to Harry in The Goblet of Fire after Cedric Diggory’s death: “Dark and difficult times lie ahead. Soon, we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.”

The 6 Best And 6 Worst Things About Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore
The second film in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise may have let down fans and critics alike, but with “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the Wizarding World franchise hopes to make things right.
While the film isn’t a cure-all for the series’ shortcomings, it’s a few steps up from the first two films. The “Fantastic Beasts” films in general have struggled with navigating the dueling plotlines of centering the series around magical creatures while simultaneously telling the story of a savage dictator’s rise to power and it’s never easy to stand in the shadow of iconic films like the “Harry Potter” series.
“Secrets of Dumbledore” straddles the line far better, finding a place for the film’s creatures without taking away from the central plot, and even leaving time to drop into Hogwarts. By honing in on the politics of the wizarding world, “Secrets” builds the world considerably while offering a dash of hope for its quirky band of misfits.
While there are plenty of improvements with this film, it isn’t all butterbeer and treacle tarts romanticizing problematic behavior is never a great move, creature deaths are better left offscreen, and it’s hard to not miss a fan-favorite absent from much of the movie. With that in mind, here are the six best and six worst things “Secrets of Dumbledore” has to offer.
Worst: Grindelwald Murders The Qilin
If you check the website Does the Dog Die before tuning into any movie involving an animal, you’re not alone. But a good fantasy movie plays off our love of animals, convincing us that dragons and wookies and gremlins have the same endearing characteristics that make our dogs, cats or goldfish life’s great companions.
It can be painful and even triggering to watch creatures get brutally murdered even pretend ones.
With “Secrets of Dumbledore,” fans are forced to bear witness to not one, but two savage death scenes for the angelic, deer-like Qilins. After Newt assist in the wondrous birth of the Qilin twins, a group of Grindelwald’s minions show up, firing killing curses at them. One hits the momma Qilin, and we watch her slowly die as she sees her baby carted off by the enemy before Newt notices the second baby. With one tear running down her eye, she dramatically perishes.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, once Grindelwald gets his hands on one of the Qilin babies, he slashes its throat in cold blood, just to resurrect it as some bastardization of the species that will do his bidding. The scene is anguishing to watch, and marks a pivotal turning point for Queenie who, like the audience, witnesses the atrocity.
Both scenes remind fans how power hungry and despicable Grindelwald and his followers have become they are also very difficult to watch.
