/10 Ginny Weasley Champions The Reductor Curse

The Reductor Curse is used six times throughout the series, mostly by Ginny Weasley and Hermione Granger. The Reductor Curse, or Reducto, is a spell that explodes objects, breaking them down into many pieces. Harry can be seen teaching this curse to Dumbledore’s Army in The Order of the Phoenix.

Ginny Weasley becomes a fan of the curse in the fifth movie, memorably using it in the Department of Mysteries. Unfortunately, this results in the many shelves of prophecies collapsing around Harry and his friends, placing them in danger. Hermione uses Reducto in The Deathly Hallows multiple times to escape Gringotts on a dragon.

Portraits In The Headmaster’s Office

The portraits in the Headmaster’s office depict all the former Heads of Hogwarts, with the exception of Dolores Umbridge. They advise the Headmaster and are “honour-bound to give service to the present headmaster” . Rowling has explained that portraits of past headteachers tend to be more realistic than most, as the subject in question usually imparts knowledge and teaches them how to behave before their death. The portrait of Snape was installed in the Headmaster’s Office at Harry’s request.

/10 Avada Kedavra Brings Death Upon Enemies

Arguably the worst of the Unforgivable Curses, the Killing Curse, Avada Kedavra, is used twelve times during the series. Most frequently used by Voldemort and his followers, the Killing Curse lives up to its name and instantly kills anyone it is cast upon, making it an incredibly strong dark spell.

Some of the saddest, most harrowing moments of the series are caused by Avada Kedavra, such as the deaths of both Cedric Diggory and Sirius Black. Harry Potter is known as the only wizard in history to have survived the Killing Curse when Voldemort fails to kill him as a baby, instead leaving him with his scar.

Top 10 Harry Potter Spells

byAkash SenapatiDecember 22, 2020, 5:22 am

The magical and colorful world of Harry Potter is synonymous with childhood for millions of people across the world. Created by J.K. Rowling, the novels were adapted for the big screen with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson portraying the golden trio. The unprecedented success of the first movie made the franchise a global phenomenon with seven more movies being released in the subsequent years. Starting off with a relatively lighter tone, the later movies quickly delved into the darker themes of loss, sadness, and death. And with each movie, fans were also introduced to much darker spells, hexes, and curses. Here are all the darkest spells from Harry Potter, ranked in order.

Every Harry Potter Spell Ranked By Usefulness

Not all spells are created equal. Sure, some of the tricks that Harry, Ron and Hermione learn at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardy are fantastical, but others are evil or worse, boring.

To get a sense of the wide spectrum of spells from J.K. Rowling’s books and the movies they became, I’ve ranked each spoken spell by its usefulness in daily life.

As it turns out, magic is best when it allows you to be lazy, and no one ever needs to make a Dark Mark, ever.

75. Crucio – Causes immense pain

That’s messed up, dude.

74. Sectumsempra – Causes severe lacerations

No thanks.

73. Morsmordre – Conjures the Dark Mark

This isn’t even funny as a joke.

72. Tarantallegra – Forces target to dance

Some people just don’t like to dance. Nothing is worse than forced dancing.

71. Fiendfyre Curse – Makes cursed fire

This is never a good idea. Just ask Crabbe.

70. Petrificus Totalus – Renders target completely immobile

Most applications I can think of are criminal.

69. Furnunculus – Covers target in boils

Not cool, and much less funny than densaugeo.

68. Rictusempra – Tickling Charm

No one likes getting tickled. No one.

67. Deletrius – Dismisses the effects of Prior Incantato

If I’m not using Prior Incantato much, I definitely don’t need this.

66. Incarcarous – Ties someone up with ropes

It’s not my bag, but to each his/her own.

65. Densaugeo – Makes teeth grow quickly

Funny, for sure, but definitely dickish.

64. Confringo – Explodes objects into flames

Don’t teach this to teenagers.

STFU!

Why Should We Keep An Account Of Harry Potter Spells

There is no limit to how many times Harry Potter fans can rewatch or reread the series. Therefore, every time we gather a new piece of information, it gives us the excuse to revisit the entire story from a new angle.

That is why an entire comprehensive account of all Harry Potter spells will clarify many things when we go back to the story again and will also cement in our minds the names of spells and works they did that we have now forgotten.

Most importantly, a list of these kinds creates an order of the different powers that coexist in the wizarding world some of which Hogwarts would rather you never acknowledge.

Study of Ancient Runes, more commonly known as Ancient Runes, is a generally theoretical subject that studies the ancient runic scripts. Because only Hermione studies it, little else is known about this subject, taught by Professor Bathsheda Babbling. In Deathly Hallows Dumbledore bequeaths his copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which is written in ancient runes, to Hermione.

The Very Useful Harry Potter Spells

24. Ferula

Even the most indoors-y of wizards will need to be bandaged up every now and then.

23. Lumos

Turning the tip of your wand into a light sounds sort of redundant in the age of smartphones, doesn’t it? But then again, would wizards really need smartphones? Probably not. Which means Lumos is still a handy one to know.

22. Nox

If you’re going to turn your wand into a light, you need the counter spell to extinguish it, too.

21. Impervius

A spell that waterproofs stuff! No, it’s not the most exciting thing in the world, but think of the practical uses! In the books this one’s mainly used for Quidditch, but in rainy old England it would be pretty essential day-to-day, particularly for people who wear glasses like Harry.

20. Engorgio

Ah, the growing charm. Perfect if you’re tending to a burgeoning vegetable patch, but definitely one to avoid using on animals.

19. Salvio Hexia

Hermione uses this spell which protects an area against hexes in order to safeguard the trio’s woodland camps in The Deathly Hallows. It’s probably the magical equivalent of a good guard dog, which is handy if you’re worried about getting ambushed.

18. Obliviate

A spell for erasing memories does sound a little on the evil side, but it’s also a crucial tool for wizards who need to stay hidden from pesky muggles.

17. Repello Muggletum

Speaking of pesky muggles, this one repels them! Absolutely crucial if you’re trying to hide out in a magical forest camp or host a giant Quidditch tournament .

Well, he wouldve been better off trying the incantation Colovaria, which you might not have known is used to cast the colour-changing charm. Magic In Harry Potter

In J. K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series, magic is depicted as a supernatural force that can be used to override the usual laws of nature. Many fictional magical creatures exist in the series, while ordinary creatures also sometimes exhibit magical properties. Magical objects are also described. The small number of humans who are able to perform magic refer to the rest of the population, oblivious to the existence of magic, as “Muggles” in the United Kingdom and “No-Maj” in the United States.

In humans, magic or the lack thereof is an inborn attribute. It is usually inherited, carried on “dominant resilient genes”. Magic is the norm for the children of magical couples and less common in those of Muggles. Exceptions exist: those unable to do magic who are born to magical parents are known as Squibs, whereas a witch or wizard born to Muggle parents is known as a Muggle-born, or by the derogatory term “Mudblood”. While Muggle-borns are quite common, Squibs are extremely rare.

Rowling based many magical elements of the Harry Potter universe on real-world mythology and magic. She has described this as “a way of giving texture to the world”. The books present the idea that the Muggle interpretation of these stories is a distorted version of what goes on in the wizarding world.
