Harry Became Acquainted With Buckbeak

Buckbeak the hippogriff is a beloved creature to fans of the Harry Potter series. Part eagle, horse, and lion, hippogriffs are proud creatures who demand respect from humans. Draco Malfoy, being arrogant and aggressive, is injured by Buckbeak

Harry shows Buckbeak respect and is allowed to fly with him over the castle grounds. This showed Harry’s humility and care for creatures whilst also providing a truly spectacular moment to witness on screen.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

Harry Potter: The Complete 8

Its tough to judge a film that is self-admittedly half a story, but since its presented as a separate entry into the Harry Potter series, Deathly Hallows Part 1 must be evaluated as such. Book readers had their issues with the walkabout nature of the first half of the final book, so many were bracing for a somewhat sluggish film adaptation of those initial chapters. And while Deathly Hallows Part 1 is mighty compelling for the first hour or so , it definitely loses steam in its second half. This is due in part to the fact that Harry, Ron, and Hermione are on a directionless hunt, disapparating from one gorgeous locale to the next as they bicker amongst themselves. This character conflict is necessary to set up the emotional payoff of Deathly Hallows Part 2, but the act of watching a film that is almost all setup gets a bit monotonous.

And perhaps Deathly Hallows Part 1s biggest issue is just thatits a lot of setup for the finale without much room for payoff. Its a necessity, and director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves handle it about as well as they could, but in one film they have to lay the foundation for all the wand business, move Ron and Hermione towards a point where they can express their romantic feelings for one another, introduce Dumbledores secretive backstory, explain the Deathly Hallows, and solidify the raised stakes leading up to the Battle of Hogwartsall without wrapping up a single one of these threads.

Witnessing Death To See The Thestrals

Thestrals are rare mythical characters, considered to be harbingers of omen and bad luck by many in the wizarding world. They are deemed dangerous by the British Ministry of Magic and can only be seen by those who have witnessed death.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Luna Lovegood and Harry are able to see these creatures and Hermione and Ron arent, Luna explains the reason. Luna had seen her mothers death at the age of 9, and Harry witnessed Cedrics death at the end of his fourth year so that makes sense.

However, the inconsistencies come in when we realise that before the events of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, he is unable to see the thestrals, despite having witnessed his mothers death. It can be assumed that he did not comprehend the disaster being an infant, but that wasnt the case when he saw Professor Quirrell die in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone.

How To Watch Harry Potter Movies In Order

Watching the Harry Potter movies in order, seeing the story unfold chronologically in-universe, used to be as easy as finding the one where Daniel Radcliffe looks youngest and starting from there.

But the series has expanded now with the Fantastic Beasts movies, set some 70 years before The Sorcerers Stone. So to watch the Harry Potter movies in order, your journey now begins with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, set in 1926 and starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scarmander. Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone

This is the one I actually saw in theaters, on opening weekend my strongest memory is being stunned by how faithful it was to the book. Watching it again all these years later, I expected to be transported into a state of childlike wonder. Instead, I felt immediately melancholy about the passage of time. Original viewers of this film didnt know that the first Dumbledore, Richard Harris, would soon die of Hodgkins lymphoma. The three lead actors small, saucer-eyed Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint didnt yet know how much their lives would be warped by living in a Diagon Alley-brand fishbowl. The sweet innocence of those performances, in retrospect, seems fragile and fleeting.

What surprised me most on my second viewing of Sorcerers Stone was how much I loved Emma Watsons Hermione. The first time around, I remember thinking that her show-offish, know-it-all nature was borderline unbearable. Now I love how unapologetic she is about her intelligence, how confidently she wields it in a room full of boys. Maybe as a girl who grew up downplaying her intelligence, Hermione made me uncomfortable in some primal, fourth-grade part of my subconscious. If thats true, it only makes me more grateful that my daughter will grow up in a post-Hermione world.

In the first movie, The Philosopher’s Stone, Harry is introduced to the world of magic and becomes acquainted with Quidditch, a ball game played on broomsticks. Harry’s natural talent at the game is immediately apparent, and he is recruited to become the youngest Hogwarts seeker in a century.

During his first game, Harry goes up against experienced players and a teacher cursing his broom, but still manages to come out on top. Harry skillfully catches the Golden Snitch in his mouth and wins Gryffindor the match.

Since September 1, all eight of the Harry Potter movies are available to stream on HBO Max in the US which is hardly surprising, seeing as the Warner Bros-owned streaming platform will consider the hit franchise as an excellent way to attract new subscribers. The movies were previously available via the Peacock service, though, and you can also rent or buy the series on services like Amazon.

In the UK, you can’t currently stream the Harry Potter movies, but you can rent or buy them on Amazon, iTunes and more. HBO Max is expected to launch on British shores soon, but we’re unsure when that’ll be The complete Harry Potter series is also available on Blu-Ray.

Meanwhile, the two Fantastic Beasts movies aren’t currently streaming in the US or the UK.

Design And Special Effects

Judianna Makovsky served as the costume designer. She re-designed the Quidditch robes, having initially planned to use those shown on the cover of the American book, but deemed them “a mess.” Instead, she dressed the Quidditch players in “preppie sweaters, 19th-century fencing breeches and arm guards.” Production designer Stuart Craig built the sets at Leavesden Studios, including Hogwarts Great Hall, basing it on many English cathedrals. Although originally asked to use an existing old street to film the Diagon Alley scenes, Craig decided to build his own set, comprising Tudor, Georgian and Queen Anne architecture.

Columbus originally planned to use both animatronics and CGI animation to create the magical creatures, including Fluffy. Nick Dudman, who worked on Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, was given the task of creating the needed prosthetics, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop providing creature effects. John Coppinger stated that the magical creatures that needed to be created had to be designed multiple times. The film features nearly 600 special effects shots, involving numerous companies. Industrial Light & Magic created Lord Voldemort‘s face on the back of Quirrell, Rhythm & Hues animated Norbert and Sony Pictures Imageworks produced the Quidditch scenes.

He Takes On A Basilisk In The Chamber Of Secrets

Harry Potter 8

Not many wizards could take on a Basilisk and live to tell the tale, let alone a second-year student. However, due to the knowledge, bravery, and skills he gained in the second movie, Harry succeeds. Basilisks are deadly giant serpents who can paralyze their victims with just one look, and their extreme size makes them strong.

In The Chamber of Secrets, Voldemort’s younger self, Tom Riddle, attempts to kill both Harry and Ginny Weasley, but Harry outsmarts both Riddle and the Snake, saving Ginny’s life and proving himself a hero yet again.

The Underage Magic Anomaly

The wizarding world has some very strict laws related to underage magic and performing magic outside school. The Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery banned using spells and charms outside Hogwarts by anyone below 17 years, apart from educational purposes, in 1875. The Improper Use of Magic Office oversees the enforcement of this rule via the Trace charm. But it is only limited to where the magic was performed and not who did it.

Underage wizards, who are unaware or unable to control their abilities are exempted. And so, when Harry, unknowingly, speaks in Parseltongue to a boa constrictor in the zoo in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone or accidentally removes the snakes glass enclosure, he is not slammed with cases.

Also, when Dobby uses a hover charm and drops a dessert at the Dursleys in front of Harry, the wizard immediately receives a warning letter reprimanding him for using underage magic in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets . He is also rebuked by Ministry officials after using the Patronus charm in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix .

Differences From The Book

Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct. Kloves described the film as being “really faithful” to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The book’s timeline is not enforced in the film. In the book, Harry’s eleventh birthday is in 1991. On the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudley’s certificates from primary school bear the year 2001.

When all hope seems lost and Hermione is feeling down without Ron, Harry invites her to dance with him in their tent. Harry shows how deeply he cares for his loved ones, even in times when he is under immense stress, and brings a moment of positivity to a very dark film.
