I reallllllly love Harry Potter and Ive been introducing my sons to the movies recently so I decided to do a Harry Potter themed Halloween porch. This was SO MUCH FUN. But the most fun part was these keys Im absolutely in love with them.
To Make Your Own Harry Potter Style Floating Candles You Will Need:
- Toilet Roll Tubes .
- Artificial tea lights .
- Sticky Tape
- Something to stick them to the ceiling. .
- Plain white paper.
If you dont have toilet roll tubes, you can always roll up thick white paper, so one of the tea lights fit inside it. . My advice is to make sure your tubes are a bit bigger than the tea lights, so you can switch them on and off easily.

So much so, a few years ago, I made my own floating candles for Halloween. This year, 8 year old Syd and I have FINALLY got around to making this Harry Potter style floating candles tutorial. Just like in the dining hall at Hogwarts make your own DIY Harry Potter Floating Candles. This is a super simple craft that will light up the darkest night!
The floating candles in Harry Potter are one of the most memorable parts of the movies. Whether you are having a Harry Potter Party or just want to do something fun for Halloween or a Movie Night, you can’t go wrong with this simple DIY Harry Potter Floating Candles.

String Fishing Line Through
Poke a sharp needle or thumbtack through the top of each paperboard toilet paper or paper towel roll and string your fishing line through to allow the DIY candles to hang from the ceiling. Poke a hole in each quadrant of the roll, so that you end up with four holes total, all on the same level and with in pairs that face each other. Make these holes an inch or two below the top edge of your rolls.
To do this quickly and easily, thread your needle and fishing wire through one end and out the other side, then cut it and tie the ends to make a simple knot at the top of the string where youll hang it. Then, repeat this step. Not only does the crossed fishing line allow you to hang the candle, but it also creates a support for the faux tea light youll insert next.
The length of each string is up to you and depends on how high or low youd like to hang your candles.

Were talking about seemingly bewitched candles suspended in thin air, as seen in Harry Potter and other magical movies.
Thankfully, you dont have to be a witch or wizard to make these otherworldly decorations. With a few simple supplies, you can make them yourself for little to no money. This easy DIY is great for beginners, and even kids can get in on the fun with adult supervision. Use flameless candles for safety reasonswe used tea lights, but you can pick whichever flameless shape or form suits your desired look. This project starts with 10 floating candles, but you can make as many as you wish.

Thread The Candle With Fishing Line
Fishing line will be used to hang the candles to achieve the floating effect. Using a thumbtack, make a small insert in the side of the tube, roughly the height of the LED light from the top. Make an identical insert directly opposite from the first. The fishing line with be strung through these holes.
Then, determine how far you want the candles to hang from the ceiling. Cut a segment of fishing line that is double this length . Thread the fishing line through the holes you created and tie the ends of the line together, creating a loop.

Making Harry Potter Floating Candles
Heres what you need to make Harry Potter floating candles:
- Cardboard rolls
- Battery-powered votives
Start by collecting your cardboard rolls. I used both toilet paper rolls and a paper towel roll that I cut once to make candles a few different heights.
Next, grab your hot glue gun. With each roll standing upright on a table or flat surface, start from the bottom of each drip and squeeze to apply hot glue, moving up the roll toward the top. This will give the glue the appearance of having dripped from the top just like a candle.
If youre making Harry Poter floating candles with kids, mom and dad should do the hot glue gun part of the craft. To help kids be active in this part of the activity, you could lend them a pencil or yellow highlighter to draw the lines of dripping wax that they want on their own candle.
Once youve applied drips of wax all the way around your candle, you need to let it dry. I recommend letting the candles sit overnight to ensure the glue is completely hardened.
Next, you need to paint your candles the right color so they look like the same magical candles floating above the tables in the Great Hall. I used FolkArt acrylic paint in Vintage White because it looked more like a wax candle than a whiter white. I also applied 2-3 coats of paint to ensure that the entire candle was all one solid color.
Heres a how-to card you can save or print to remember these instructions:
Paint Each Roll White
Dip your paintbrush in acrylic craft paint and completely coat your toilet paper or paper towel rolls so that they look solid white, like classic candles. Depending on how thick your paint is, you can add multiple coats of paint. Just allow each coat to dry before adding another one.
Once finished painting, let the paint dry before continuing the project. This could take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hoursfollow the instructions on the back of your paint bottle for the best results.

To throw a proper Harry Potter party, youve got to have the decor. You might think this will cost you a small fortune, but if you do it right you can throw a cheap yet amazing Harry Potter party for any occasion. Halloween, Christmas, Birthdays, Graduations, because its a day that ends in y, whatever reason you want. I worked as a Teen Librarian for many years and threw five different successful Harry Potter parties for the public. I would love to share my knowledge with you!

Today Im going to start out with an oldie but goodie: DIY floating candles like those you see in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. Standard disclaimer that this is not an original idea of mine, but I like to throw my own twist on things.
This ones a lot of fun for almost all ages because its easy, cheap, and environmentally friendly. First, collect your materials. Save up toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls. I personally like the way the paper towel rolls look better. Ask around if anyone you know would be willing to save theirs for you as well. Once you have a good sized stash, collect the rest of your materials. You will need:
- plastic tea lights
- a hole punch or other object to insert holes
- string, fishing wire, or other invisible hanging materials
First, paint your rolls white or off white. Let dry.

How To Make Harry Potter Floating Candles
How to make Harry Potter Floating Candles: I knew I wanted to make about 24 of these floating candles, so I started saving my toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls. With the help of some friends it only took a little over two weeks to complete my collection!
Step 1: Line all your rolls up and spray them with your white spray paint. Do not worry if it is not completely covered, this is just your base coat.
Step 2: Once the rolls are dry it is time to fire up your hot glue gun. I let my glue heat up for about 15 minutes before use so the glue would be really hot and drippy. Working quickly, glue around the top end of the roll. Create wax-like drips running down from the top. Allow the glue to dry completely before you move on to the next step. These drips do not have to be perfect. The idea is to make them look like real candle wax.
Step 3: Coat your rolls in chalk paint. I like to use chalk paint. Because it is thicker, you only need to do one coat of paint. It created an even looking surface, and dries pretty quickly as well. Paint over your wax drips and the entire roll, except for where you are holding it at the bottom.
Step 4: After the paint has dried you are going to snip off the end of your roll . I cut between 1 to 3 inches off my bases, so my candles would be varying height. After all, some candles burn more quickly than others!
Step 5: Glue a small piece of white paper to the base of the candle. Cut off the excess around it.

Lets Start With The Floating Candles
We are going to be using poster board, tea candles, hot glue and hierloom-white spray paint. The main idea is to roll up the poster board to create cylinders using the tea candles to size the circumference, use the hot glue to create the candle drips and use the spray paint to make it all look nice and smooth.
Tips For Electric Tea Light Candles:
The biggest expense for this project will definitely be your remote control electric tea light candles but I promise you its worth every penny! I spent an embarrassing amount of time researching the candles I bought. Trust me. Its a great deal. Theres 3 things you need to make sure of when youre buying your candles:
- They must be electric! Youre hanging cardboard tubes near a ceiling need I say more!?
- They need to be remote controlled. Can you imagine climbing up to the ceiling to each individual tube every single time you want to turn them on or off? Yeah, get a remote control set!
- Get tea light size! If you spring for the beautiful larger candles they wont fit in your cardboard tubes!

Tips For Hanging Your Floating Candles:
Time for the finishing touches! THIS is the MOST IMPORTANT PART! I didnt think about it until I was making my own floating candles but the tea lights dont just sit in the toilet paper tubes by themselves! Youll want to ball up aluminum foil and stuff them INSIDE of your tube. About a quarter of the way down. You can adjust how deep your foil ball is based on how high up the tea light sits.
Im a bit of a perfectionist so I wanted my tea lights to sit down inside the tube and not hang over the top so I shoved my foil down a little further.
To actually hang these guys up I used clear fishing line threaded through the top of the cardboard. A strong needle to poke through the cardboard works well or the tip of a sharp knife. Thread the fishing line through and tie at the top.
Make sure you leave plenty of line for hanging over the top of the electric candle otherwise youll find yourself too close to the ceiling! We have popcorn ceilings so I had to use tacks to attach to the ceiling but you can use tape, hooks, etc. Add your electric candle inside!
Space floating candles naturally on the ceiling! Since I did a hallway mine were about 1.5 feet apartish and I zig zagged them down the hallway. Do what works for you! And make sure to keep that remote control handy! I had mine up for 2 months before we finally took them down and my electric candles are still good today!
