Paul Ritter, a British actor best known to American audiences for his roles in HBO’s “Chernobyl” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” has died of a brain tumor. He was 54.
Representatives for Ritter, whose other notable credits include starring on U.K. series “Friday Night Dinner” and appearing in the James Bond film “Quantum of Solace,” confirmed his death to TheWrap Tuesday.
“It is with great sadness we can confirm that Paul Ritter passed away last night,” Ritter’s agent said in a statement. “He died peacefully at home with his wife Polly and sons Frank and Noah by his side. He was 54 and had been suffering from a brain tumor. Paul was an exceptionally talented actor playing an enormous variety of roles on stage and screen with extraordinary skill. He was fiercely intelligent, kind and very funny. We will miss him greatly.”
Personal Life And Death
In 1996, Ritter married Polly Radcliffe, a research fellow at King’s College London. He lived in Faversham, Kent. He had two sons named Frank and Noah.
Ritter died of a brain tumour on 5 April 2021, aged 54, in his home, surrounded by his family. Long-time friend Stephen Mangan tweeted: “Trying to find a way to talk about Paul Ritter and struggling. My friend since we were students together. So much talent and it shone from him even as a teenager. I was so lucky to know him and lucky too to work with him many times over the years. Wonderful man.” Fellow actors from Friday Night Dinner also paid tribute. Writing in The Guardian, Tamsin Greig said she was “eternally grateful” to have known Ritter.Simon Bird said he always aspired to be like him whilst Tom Rosenthal called him an “ultimate professional”.

Following actor Paul Ritter’s tragic death last night, people are reminiscing on some of his most memorable TV and film roles.
As well as playing dad Martin Goodman in Friday Night Dinner, he also starred in Sky drama Chernobyl and in James Bond film Quantum of Solace.
But, in case you need a reminder, the actor had a role in the sixth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Ritter played character Eldred Worple in the film franchise – a wizard who was once a favourite student of Professor Horace Slughorn .
When Slughorn returns to Hogwarts to teach Harry Potter in his sixth year, he invites some of his old students – including Worple – to his ‘Slug Club’ Christmas party.
In the franchise, Worple is introduced to Harry Potter by Slughorn and tries to convince the boy wizard to let him write his biography.
However, Harry refuses the tempting offer, instead escaping to meet Hermione and Worple does not make any other appearances in the films or books.
It was confirmed this morning that the popular actor had died at the age of 54.
His agent said: “It is with great sadness we can confirm that Paul Ritter passed away last night.”
They added that he was surrounded by his wife Polly and his two sons, Frank and Noah when he passed.
As well as his appearance in Harry Potter, Ritter was best known for playing Martin in Channel 4 comedy Friday Night Dinner, which ran for six seasons from 2011.

Ritter also made an appearance in the Harry Potter films, portraying Eldred Worple in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
Worple attends a Slug Club Christmas party at Hogwarts, bringing vampire Sanguini as a guest. Worple goes on to tempt Harry to let him write a biography on him, citing the vast sums of money to be made.

In a statement, his agent said that the actor, who also appeared in numerous films including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Quantum of Solace, died at home with his family by his side.
Robert Popper, the creator of the sitcom for which Ritter is best known, saying: Devastated at this terribly sad news. Paul was a lovely, wonderful human being. Kind, funny, super caring and the greatest actor I ever worked with.
In 2019, Ritter displayed his range with a terrifying performance as Anatoly Dyatlov in the multi-award winning Chernobyl. Toby Whithouse, who wrote spy thriller The Game in which Ritter starred in 2014, said: This is terrible devastating news. Paul was a stunning actor, a lovely lovely guy. How utterly dreadful.
Ritter was also a talented stage actor, and was nominated for an Olivier award in 2006 for his performance in Coram Boy and for a Tony award for his 2009 starring role in the Norman Conquests.
Ritter is due to appear in the Friday Night Dinner 10th anniversary retrospective, which will air on Channel 4 later this year.

Friday Night Dinner, Harry Potter and Chernobyl star Paul Ritter has left his entire £80,000 estate to his wife after dying from a brain tumour aged 54.
The actor, whose real name was Simon Paul Adams, died at home from Faversham, Kent, on April 5 surrounded by his wife Polly Radcliffe and sons Frank and Noah.
Documents show Ritter left his 55-year-old wife his entire estate, which had a gross value of £81,478 and a net value of £69,478.
The family home is a mid-terrace house worth £562,000, which was bought nearly 20 years ago in April 2002 for £181,500.
Probate was granted to Radcliffe, a research fellow at Kings College in London, as the sole administrator and executor of his estate, and its full value was left to her.
Ritter had a long and successful acting career over nearly 30 years that included playing family patriarch Martin Goodman in Channel 4s Friday Night Dinner.
The comedy in which he starred with Tamsin Greig and Simon Bird focuses on the middle-class Jewish familys weekly evening meal.
He also portrayed engineer Anatoly Dyatlov in the acclaimed HBO drama Chernobyl and wizard Eldred Worple in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Ritter also played special adviser Guy Haines in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. His other TV credits included Vera, Belgravia, Cold Feet, and No Offence.
Ritter was born in Kent and made his TV debut in The Bill in 1992.

Following his death in 2013, Radcliffe paid tribute to his onscreen uncle, saying: “Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career.
“In August 2000, before official production had even begun on Potter, we filmed a shot outside the Dursley’s, which was my first ever shot as Harry.
“I was nervous and he made me feel at ease. Seven years later, we embarked on Equus together.
“It was my first time doing a play but, terrified as I was, his encouragement, tutelage and humour made it a joy. In fact, any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence. I am proud to say I knew him.”

His agent has confirmed he died of a brain tumour, surrounded by loved ones.
The actor is perhaps best known for his roles starring opposite Tamsin Greig, Simon Bird and Tom Rosenthal in Channel 4’s Friday Night Dinner.

His final role in Operation Mincemeat as Bentley Purchase is understood to have been completed but the film has not yet been released.

Chernobyl screenwriter Craig Mazin said on Twitter that Ritter was one of the most gentle, gracious and brilliant people Ive ever known, much less worked with. We lost him today, and far too soon. I wish his family and loved ones peace and comfort as they mourn the passing of this beautiful man.
The actor was nominated for a Tony Award in 2009 for his performance in Alan Ayckbourns farce The Norman Conquests on Broadway.
