Rowling achieved with Draco in the books was adapted well on the big screen with Tom Felton’s spot-on performance.
In particular, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows offered a closer look at Draco that did the unthinkable. They provided insight into the insecurities and vulnerability behind his snarky, sometimes cruel facade. He’s no saint with a heart of gold and many of his actions and prejudices remain inexcusable. Yet, there was also a lot more to the character than many fans realized, a depth and inner struggle — particularly explored in Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows — that explained why he was that way.
Like Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Draco kept himself busy and got up to quite a few things in the years after Hogwarts. While many of Draco’s core traits remained in adulthood, he also changed in many ways and overall became a better person. By the time fans caught up with Draco in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, he was in many senses a changed man.

Opinion Draco Malfoy Deserved A Redemption Arc
Although its been nearly nine years since the final release of the Harry Potter films and almost 13 years since the conclusion of the book series, fans continue to debate and craft the wizarding world to their hearts desire. The addition of spinoff series such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Cursed Child have only expanded the world more. Even now, author J.K. Rowling continues to update the wizarding world with articles on her site.
The world of Harry Potter and friends was a big part of my childhood I saw all the movies, read all the books, even got the opportunity to visit Diagon Alley in Orlando Studios and get a replica of Hermiones wand. Even now, when Im stressed and want to escape to a fantasy world, I pick up my Harry Potter books and dive in.
The world had never been perfect I disagreed with several of the choices Rowling made both in and outside the world. But something that never sat right with me was the ending for Draco Malfoy.
For those who do not remember, Draco Malfoy was the only child of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy. He was told he was exceptional as a pure-blooded wizard and a Malfoy. He was told the Dark Lords return meant wealth and fame for his family and he was destined to become his father. When Harry Potter turned down Malfoys offer of friendship, it became clear Potter would not contribute to the rise of Voldemort.
Well, Draco? said Lucius Malfoy. He sounded avid. Is it? Is it Harry Potter?
Opinion On The Malfoy Line
Knowing her life would most likely be taken by her hereditary blood curse, Astoria wanted the chance to raise a child, and for Draco to have someone so he wouldn’t be alone in the years after his wife passed away. Draco told Astoria that he didn’t care about furthering the Malfoy line.
His feelings were primarily rooted in how giving birth would affect Astoria’s health.
Undoubtedly his feelings also tied back to his own childhood where he was often unhappy and constantly pressured to act as his parents desired. Realizing that a child wouldn’t be about carrying on the Malfoy name or for glory, Draco and Astoria agreed to have a child together. Despite Draco’s initial misgivings, he says in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that the birth of Scorpius was the happiest day ever for him and his wife.

Draco Malfoy Actor Tom Felton Made A Documentary About Harry Potter Fans
Feltons proximity to Harry Potter fandom gave him a unique perspective when he set out to make a documentary about Harry Potter fans.
Were not just talking about the fact that he was in the Harry Potter films, although that does help to an extent. His 2015 BBC documentary looks into the lives of the fans who wait in line to meet him and other actors at conventions, and how the books and films have affected them, which opened his eyes to their experiences along the way.
It was a massive insight for me, going behind the ropes and seeing what people actually do to stand behind a railing at an event, Felton told JustJared in 2015. You dont really think about the three hours it took them to stand there and get the best spot.
Although some initially feared that Feltons documentary would misunderstand or mock its subjects , it was well-received by critics, helped in part by Feltons willingness to look deeper.

Harry Potter And The The Half Blood Prince
This book focuses mainly around Harry and Malfoy. Malfoy is recruited by Voldemort who has returned, as a Death Eater and is given the task of smuggling a group of Death Eaters into the school and to assassinate Albus Dumbledore. In this book, JK shares Malfoy’s feelings with us about having to kill his Headmaster and it ends up getting too much for him. At the end he and the Death Eaters flee the school.

He’s Willing To Step Out Of His Comfort Zone For Scorpius
âWe can hug too if you like.â
Okay, so maybe it doesn’t seem like much for your dad to offer you a hug, but in the Malfoy family, affection is typically shown in unusual ways . At the end of the script, Draco notices that his son is more affectionate and loving than a typical Malfoy, prompting him to offer Scorpius a hug for what we can assume is the first time. The hug is awkward and strange for both of them, but it’s a step in the right direction, something that makes them both smile.
There’s no denying Draco is a complex character in his own right. But, why would Rowling make Harry and Ron save Draco’s life in The Deathly Hallows if she didn’t think he could grow as a character? The Cursed Child, while strange and surprising in many ways, showed that magic really can be found in even the darkest of places.

The Peverell family is first mentioned in Half-Blood Prince as ancestors of , the maternal grandfather of Voldemort. In the final book of the series, they are revealed to be the original owners of the , which, according to , they received from Death, although Dumbledore believed it is more likely that they created them themselves. The Peverell lineage continues through its living descendants, including Harry and his children.
After Hermione saw the symbol of the Deathly Hallows on Ignotus Peverell’s grave in Godric’s Hollow, Harry recalled Marvolo Gaunt boasting that his ring held the Peverell on it, thus realising that the three brothers were the Peverells. Harry deduces that he is descended from Ignotus, as the cloak is passed down through his family. Furthermore, Rowling has confirmed that Harry and Voldemort are indeed distant relatives because of their relation to the Peverells, as the majority of wizard families share common ancestry.
Antioch Peverell was the eldest of the three Peverell brothers, and owner of the . He was killed in his sleep after bragging about the wand’s invincibility, having won a duel with it. The murderer then stole the Elder Wand, thus initiating its bloody history.

Uses The Mudblood Slur Multiple Times
Even the Wizarding World is not unknown to the use of offensive slurs. The term Mudblood is used for wizards who have Muggles for parents. Muggle born wizards like Hermione are looked down upon by wizards of pure descent. Malfoy uses the slur on her whenever she gets on his nerves. That is completely not cool. Although Hermione handles it like a champ, it gives Draco Malfoy no right to treat her the way he did and get away with it.

The Real Reason Draco Malfoy Disliked Harry So Much
Out of all the original characters from the Harry Potter series who appeared in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Draco is the one with the most growth.
Sure, his hatred of Harry ebbed over the years. But it wasnt like they were going to grab coffee and catch up, and their sons friendship certainly complicated things. Add in a complex time travel plot, a mysterious Time Turner, and two fathers whose sons are in danger, and youll have Draco working alongside Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny.
While Draco finally got the redemption fans had hoped for, he was finally able to voice something thataccording to Rowlinghad been part of the reason he treated the trio so horribly over the years: He was envious of what they had.
Draco was jealous in a superficial way: Harry was more popular and admired than him without trying, and he excelled at Quidditch. But Dracos envy extended to the relationship Harry had with Ron and Hermione. Draco mightve started out with bodyguards/henchmen in Crabbe and Goyle, but he wanted something more.
Two lunks who wouldnt know one end of a broomstick from another, Draco told Harry in Cursed Child. Youthe three of youyou shone, you know? You liked each other. You had fun. I envied you those friendships more than anything else.
If fighting Voldemorts illegitimate daughter through time didnt bond them, Draco and Harry mightveat the very leastbetter understood one another.
Desires Something More Than Wealth
Dracos adult hobbies hint that he desires for something other than wealth. I mean, arent Slytherins known for their ambition? It must be torture for someone with ambition to already have wealth and have nothing to do.
However, Rowling hasnt yet released any information as to if Draco has accomplished anything other than wealth. He collects dark artifacts and studies alchemical manuscripts, what can you do with that? With knowledge of potions, you could really make claim to fame with a possible cure to magical threats such as curses. In fact, that would be perfect since Astoria perished from a curse!
We think doing something good with a dark artifact would make it not a dark artifact anymore. From my earlier summary of the dark artifacts weve seen, they are not really friendly devices. However, Draco could possibly use the collection to test alchemical formulas! I dont know how but Im sure it could be done.
We should also think about what Draco doesnt have. His family has probably nearly lost all influence after the conclusion of the war, so he could strive for that. There is honor and fame, which is something most ambitious people strive for other than money.

The Real Reason Draco Malfoy Tried To Befriend Harry
There was a time, albeit a short one, when Draco very much wanted Harry to be his friend.
He already knew several children of former Death Eaters before he stepped onto the Hogwarts Express, so he wasnt necessarily in need or want of friends. It was, according to J.K. Rowling, because he wanted to find out whether Harry was secretly a dark wizard that Voldemorts surviving supporters could rally behind. It had long been one of the more persistent theories surrounding Harry, unbeknownst to him, as to how he survived Voldemorts Killing Curse as a baby. It was also a theory that Dracos father Lucius supported.
Unfortunately for Draco, Harry wasnt having it. Harry recognized Draco as the boy from Madam Malkin who insulted Hagrid and voiced that Muggle-borns shouldnt attend Hogwarts. By then Harry had already made a friend in Ron, who Draco insulted for his appearance and familys lack of wealth. After being raised by the uppity Dursleys, Harry recoiled at Dracos snobbery.
It didnt take Draco long to abandon the belief that Harry could possibly be a dark wizard. The rest, as they say, was history.
What Happened To Draco Malfoy
At the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it was revealed that Draco and his mother avoided Azkaban. And, as he lived out the remainder of his teenage years, Draco had a change of heart. Draco and his wife, Astoria Greengrass, decided early on that they would raise their son without pure-blood beliefs.

Draco Is One Of The Younger Students In His Year At Hogwarts
For most wizards and witches, that catch-all age that determines what they can and cant legally do is 17. At 17, they can perform magic outside of Hogwarts, apparate , and are generally considered adults. Depending on when their birthday falls on the calendar, this occurs either during or after their sixth year at Hogwarts.
Apart from the requirement that wizards be of age for the Triwizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire, the age difference wasnt much of a factor for Harry and company until Half-Blood Prince. When the first test date for the Apparition Testwhich wizards and witches needed to pass go receive a license to apparatearrived on April 21, Ron and Hermione were old enough to take the test, but Harry was not, so he had to remain behind at Hogwarts.
Based on the attendance of Professor Slughorns class that day, he wasnt the only one. Two other students stayed behind: Ernie Macmillan, a Hufflepuff in Harrys year, and Draco, whose birthday falls on June 5, 1980. Though Dracos birthday had been previously revealed on Rowlings website, the exclusion of Draco from taking the Apparition Test made it official.
Because were only shown one class, its unclear just how many other students werent able to take the Apparition Test that day. For example, Neville Longbottoms birthday falls on July 30, 1980 but wasnt in the class because he didnt qualify to advance to N.E.W.T.-level Potions.
Harry Potter And The Cursed Child
In the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Draco appears with his son Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy, who became best friends with Harry‘s second son Albus Severus Potter. It was revealed that during the fourth year of Scorpius’s time in Hogwarts that Draco became widowed, as his wife Astoria Malfoy passed away due to a inherited blood curse, which could shorten her lifespan and disallow her from growing into old age.
After he was married, Draco initially contemplated letting the Malfoy bloodline to end with him to allow Astoria live longer , as he was aware of Astoria’s family blood curse and that childbirth would weaken her further. Astoria, however, persuaded him from doing so as she wanted a child not for the pure-blood beliefs, but for him so that he will not be alone should she died some day, which culiminated into the birth of Draco’s first and only child Scorpius. Draco had once considered the birth of his son as the greatest day of his life, even though Scorpius’s birth had led to Astoria’s health to be further weakened and eventually caused her to die fourteen years later.
During the events of the play, Draco slowly made amends with Harry and his friends as they all embarked on a journey to save their sons from Voldemort‘s daughter Delphini, demonstrating his slow, but gradual acknowledgement of Harry as a friend and his outright denouncement of his Death Eater past.
