A little while ago, I added a reference to Hermione being considered pretty at the Yule Ball in 1994. This was removed, and I agree with the editors comment that it was poorly worded. However, I do think something along those lines would be relevant under that section. It is called Physical Description and Traits, after all, and similar remarks can be found in the articles for Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood, for instance. Furthermore, later books seem to indicate that Hermione would be considered pretty as well; in DH, this is shown at least three times from three very different viewpoints. Ron says she looks great at Bill and Fleurs wedding; Muggle men at Tottenham Court Road wolf-whistle at her and one offers to buy her a drink; Fenrir Greyback refers to her as your pretty little friend. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone

Rowling took the name Hermione from The Winters Tale. While Shakespeares play influenced her choice of name, Rowling doesnt feel there are many similarities between her Hermione and Shakespeares. Shakespeares Hermione is falsely accused of adultery, something that doesnt happen to Rowlings Hermione in any book or film. What a plot that would be!

Rowling didnt just choose the name Hermione because she was influenced by Shakespeare. She also wanted a name for her character that was very uncommon. Why? She knew if she gave the character a common name, girls would be teased for having her characters name. According to Insider, Rowling explained she didnt want a lot of fairly hard-working little girls to be teased if ever the book was published.

Rowlings thought process behind the name was certainly thoughtful. No child wants to be teased for their name. However, Harry and Ron are fairly common names. One can only wonder why Rowling didnt choose to give her male protagonists more unique names.

Harry Potter And The Half

New Potions professor Horace Slughorn invites Hermione to join his Slug Club, and she helps Ron retain his spot on the Gryffindor Quidditch team when she casts a confund spell on Cormac McLaggen, causing him to miss his last save attempt during Keeper tryouts. Hermiones feelings for Ron continue to grow and she decides to make a move by inviting him to Slughorns Christmas Party, but he romances Lavender instead in retaliation for his belief that Hermione had kissed Krum years earlier. She attempts to get even by dating McLaggen at the Christmas party, but her plan goes awry and she abandons him midway through the party. Ron and Hermione continually feud with each other until he suffers a near-fatal poisoning from tainted mead, which frightens her enough to reconcile with him. Following Dumbledores death, Ron and Hermione both vow to stay by Harrys side regardless of what happens. A minor subplot in the book is that Hermione and Harry form a rivalry in Potions, as Hermione is used to coming first in her subjects and is angered that Harry outperforms her undeservedly by following tips and different instructions written in the margins of Harrys potions book by the previous owner. Hermione is also the only one of the trio to successfully pass her Apparition test .
