Harry Potter At The Franklin Institute In 202: How To Get Tickets And More

Muggles can win tickets by trying to catch Golden Snitches throughout the Philly region.

The Franklin Institute cracked open a veritable chamber of secrets Wednesday when it revealed the first details about Harry Potter: The Exhibition, a traveling show organizers hope will stupefy even the most hardened of Slytherins when it premieres in Philadelphia in February.

From wizards and witches to giant traveling Golden Snitches, the Franklin Institute is going all out to drum up excitement for the exhibition, which museum leaders and city officials hope will bring more money to Philly than exists in all of Gringotts Bank.

When we went out to get this exhibition, we really looked broader because we knew this city needed some things to help in its economic recovery as we come out of COVID, said Franklin president and CEO Larry Dubinski. The impact an exhibition like this can have, not just on the Franklin Institute but hotels, restaurants, and other arts and culture venues, will be a boon for the entire region.

More than 21,000 tickets to the exhibit were sold in pre-sale before Dubinski announced ticket sales were open to the general public Wednesday during a media event at the museums Great Hall.

While some details are still being kept as closely guarded as Azkaban Prison, heres what you should know about the exhibition .

When you visit this exhibit, youre not just there to see . Youre there to participate.

When you enter, a staff member hands you a wristband but its not the typical, dig-into-your-skin, cant-tear-them-off paper ring. Its a soft ribbon with a sliding bead that lets you adjust it to your wrist size. More importantly, it has an RFID tag with a picture of a Golden Snitch.

That tag is key to customizing your experience. Scan it at the front touch screen to enter your name and email, choose my Hogwarts House , your favorite wand , and your patronus .

Once set up, you can tap into interactive stations, like the one that makes your name appear on a giant Marauders Map, displayed on huge screens that almost form their own room.

For the most part, the interactives are short and sweet and very kid-friendly. However, they are limited to one try per person so make sure your Sorting Hat selfie is actually good before you press the button to take it. Theyre really fun, so people want to do it again and again, exhibit creator Zaller explained, so those ones we had to limit.

There can still be some long lines. During my visit, I hit a bit of a traffic jam and had to do some waiting once I reached the Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts rooms, which featured the opportunities to brew potions by selecting the correct ingredients on a screen and to fight a Boggart by casting the Riddikulus spell .

‘harry Potter: The Exhibition’ Tickets Are Now On Sale For Philadelphia Premiere

Harry Potter rather famously got a chance to compete in the Triwizard Tournament even though he was underage and never put his name in the Goblet of Fire.

He became one of four young wizards to vie for the cup, the glory of their school and a thousand Galleon.

The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia can’t offer you that, exactly. But the Science Museum is offering a chance to be one of the first four people to tour the world premiere of “Harry Potter: The Exhibition” when it comes to Philadelphia next year.

The exhibit, created by Imagine Exhibitions in partnership with Warner Bros., comes as the first “Harry Potter” film marks its 20th anniversary.

Tickets are now on sale for the show, which opens Feb. 18 and announces itself as “the most comprehensive touring exhibition ever presented about the Wizarding World.”

Come explore with us:

It is highly recommended that fans of Harry, Hermione, Ron and Ginny reserve their tickets early for this timed-entry event. At press time, more than 20,000 tickets had been sold within hours of their release.

“Harry Potter” will take Wizards and Muggles alike behind the scenes, where they can get up close to memorable characters, settings and moments from the books and films and the larger world created by author J.K. Rowling, including more recent works such as “Fantastic Beasts” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

From there, they will select their Hogwarts house and wand and explore the show on a personalized journey.

Staircase & Foucault Pendulum

One of the coolest things at The Franklin Institute is the massive Foucault Pendulum suspended in the large central staircase. Léon Foucault proved the rotation of the earth in 1851 with a similar pendulum in Paris.

The Franklin Institutes pendulum has been swinging for 80 years, a 180-lb ball on an 85-foot wire. Set up around the base is a series of metal pins. Every 20 minutes or so, the ball knocks down a pin. Though its not the pendulum that is making the shift, its the earth rotating under it.

Win Tickets By Seeking Golden Snitches

Sheila Watko Gives You a 1st Look at Harry Potter: The Exhibition’ in Philly

Through a series of interactive photo-op installations that will travel throughout the Northeast over the next few months, one lucky Muggle will have the chance to win four tickets and be the first to enter the exhibition when it opens.

A 13-foot-tall display featuring a Hogwarts Castle and a floating Nimbus 2000 broomstick that fans can hop on for a photo-op will be displayed from Nov. 3 to 10 in the ticketing area of the Franklin before it travels to other, as of yet, unannounced locations. When fans scan a QR code on the display with their phones, it takes them to an augmented-reality game called Seek the Golden Snitch, where they must try to catch a Golden Snitch as it flies in and out of their screen . Once the QR code is scanned, Muggles can enter their email for a chance to win tickets.

Four giant, Hagrid-sized Golden Snitches on pedestals will also tour the Northeast and feature the same QR code and interactive game. The first four Golden Snitch locations will be at the Franklin Independence Visitor Center in Center City The Promenade at Sagemore in Marlton and Peddlers Village in New Hope and will appear within the next seven to 10 days.

To find out upcoming dates and locations for the displays, fans are urged to follow Harry Potter: The Exhibition and the Franklin Institute on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

The winning Muggle will also receive a two-night hotel stay in Philly, a $500 cash prize, merchandise, and a family membership to the Franklin.

What Is The Exhibit Like

I toured a preview of the exhibition just before it opened on Friday.

Here, according to this big fan, are the 12 coolest things you will encounter saving best for last if you and your favorite Muggles attend the show:

1. Gain points for your house by getting a Quaffle through a ring at the Quidditch match. If you ever wished you were a chaser like Ginny Weasley, this is your big chance.

2. Repot a screeching Mandrake in Professor Sprouts Herbology Class. It may leave your ears ringing, but it’s worth it. .

3. As is often the case at major exhibitions anywhere, guests will exit through the gift shop. Sometimes that is annoying but in this case its quite fun. Have some extra gold stored in your vault at Gringotts? Stock up on Harry Potter swag and gifts in the shop, which offers everything from chocolate frogs to Daily Prophet tote bags to Dobby plush dolls.

4. Conjure something Riddikulus to fend off the shape shifting Boggarts in your Defense Against the Dark Arts Class.

6. If you always wanted to cast your Patronus, now is your chance. Since I was Hermione, I got to conjure an otter and banish those joy-sucking Dementors.

7. Do watching the movie scenes in Hogwarts make you crave Cornish Pasties and Pumpkin Juice? Visit the Great Hall. While you cannot dine exactly, you will get to see those amazing, suspended candles over the mammoth tables.

My overall impression?

To paraphrase Hermione Granger, its pure pleasure.

The #1 Piece Of Advice Before Visiting Harry Potter: The Exhibition

Plan to spend a few hours walking around the exhibit. With so many other attractions in the area, it may be tempting to try to see them all in a day. However, while you can get through the Harry Potter exhibition itself in 60 to 90 minutes, the entire Franklin Institute is worth a visit. Exhibits explore human anatomy, mechanics, space, and more. Visitors can even walk inside of a giant anatomically correct heart.
