Emma Watson Got Candid About Working With The Four Harry Potter Directors

Naturally, each director had a different style and a different way of working with the actors. With each filmmaker, the cast was asked to approach their work differently. However, one director really changed the expectations for the golden trio. In an interview with JoBlo, Watson got candid about exactly who that was.

Well, its interesting, Watson began. I think working with different directors have signaled different Alfonso wasnt going to do any of the kiddie directing stuff. He was like, Get up there and do it. He didnt have much patience for yes wide, look terrified! He wasnt going to do any of that, so he made us step up.

Why Did Chris Columbus Leave The ‘harry Potter’ Franchise

Emma Watson, producer David Heyman, Daniel Radcliffe, Chris Columbus, and Rupert Grint in 2002

In an interview marking Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stones 20th anniversary in November 2020, Chris told The Hollywood Reporter he decided not to direct the third Harry Potter film because of how exhausting and time-consuming it was to work on the first two.

Sorcerers Stone took 160 days of shooting, which is ridiculously long. And then, immediately after we stopped shooting, we started shooting Chamber of Secrets, which was another 160 days. Thats roughly 320 days not counting second-unit back-to-back shooting.

After Chamber of Secrets, Chris could barely speak and felt emotionally and physically exhausted, he said. I wasnt seeing my kids, who were young at the time, growing up, he added. I was missing dinners with them. I thought, I cant do another six, seven, eight years of this. My kids will grow up, and Ill never get to know them.

Alfonso Cuarn Gave The Golden Trio A Homework Assignment

Directed by Mike Newell. With Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert ...

One way that Cuarón encouraged Watson, Grint, and Radcliffe to step up was through a homework assignment. When he began working with them, he assigned them a paper so that he could get an understanding of who their characters were from their perspective. In a DVD interview for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Watson recalled this assignment.

Basically Alfonso asked us to write an essay about who we thought our characters were, why they did the things they do, Waston explained about the director. Their backgrounds, their feelings, their thoughts, how theyve changed in the first year of Hogwarts, and the second year of Hogwarts. And now theyre into the third year, how they feel.

Watson didnt seem to mind the extra work at all. In fact, she turned in a 16-page essay about her character, Hermione Granger. The Beauty and the Beast star has stated that she has a very heady approach to acting. So she enjoyed the opportunity to give Cuarón an in-depth look into Hermiones head. And while the director forced her to step up her game, he remains one of her favorite people that she worked with throughout the Harry Potter movies.

How Much Did Daniel Radcliffe Make From Harry Potter

Radcliffe reportedly made $95.6 million from the Harry Potter franchise as a whole. He admitted to The Telegraph , I dont really do anything with my money, adding, Im very grateful for it, because having money means you dont have to worry about it, which is very lovely freedom to have. It also gives me immense freedom career-wise.

Radcliffe previously told Paradethat the financial freedom afforded to him by the Harry Potter films gives him leeway to do work hes passionate about, but hes still sometimes anxious about being perceived as one-noteand that he longs to model his own career after a certain charming Oscar winner.

Differences From The Book

Columbus repeatedly checked with Rowling to make sure he was getting minor details correct. Kloves described the film as being “really faithful” to the book. He added dialogue, of which Rowling approved. One of the lines originally included had to be removed after Rowling told him that it would directly contradict an event in the then-unreleased fifth Harry Potter novel Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The book’s timeline is not enforced in the film. In the book, Harry’s eleventh birthday is in 1991. On the film set for 4 Privet Drive, Dudley’s certificates from primary school bear the year 2001.

Draco’s I Didn’t Know You Could Read Line

One of the most humorous moments from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was when Harry and Ron disguised themselves as Crabbe and Goyle and figured out just how much Draco Malfoy patronizes his two friends. During this scene, Draco says the humorous line “I didn’t know you could read” in response to “Goyle” explaining that he was wearing glasses because he was reading.

This line was actually improvised by actor Tom Felton, who had evidently forgotten his actual line, and responded in the most in-character and sarcastic way he could come up with. It was such a hilarious line that Harry Potter director Chris Columbus chose to keep it in the final cut.

Jk Rowling Turning Down The Role Of Lily Potter

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts | Official Trailer | HBO Max

For Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, author J.K. Rowling was actually offered the role of Lily Potter as a cameo. Rowling would’ve needed to have appeared in the Mirror of Erised in the first Harry Potter movie, in addition to a couple of flashbacks. The filmmakers did ask me to play Lily Potter in the first film,” Rowling said, “but I really am not cut out to be an actress, even one who just has to stand there and wave. I would have messed it up somehow.

While it would’ve been nice to have seen Rowling cameo throughout the franchise, much like Stan Lee, having her play Harry’s mother wouldn’t have been the right way to do it. Every time Lily showed up, it was in an emotional way, as the loss of Harry’s mother was still a soft spot for him. Making these moments into fun cameos would have seriously hurt their emotional aspects.

Chris Columbus Says That He Is Glad He Didn’t Direct The Last Two Harry Potter Films

The Harry Potter film franchise was directed by four directors namely Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates. Chris kickstarted the Harry Potter movies by directing the first and the second part: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets. He had denied to direct the third film and joined the production team. Recently he mentioned that he wanted to direct the last two The Deathly Hallows film but things didn’t turn out the way he wanted to.

Everything Deleted With Teddy Lupin

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that gave a bit of hope despite the dark events was the birth of Teddy Lupin, the child of Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks. For whatever reason, the movies deleted nearly every aspect of Teddy, even the scenes that were in the script that were shot, but were deleted from the theatrical release. Teddy was an important part of the books, with Harry going on to be his godfather.

It wasn’t just Teddy’s absence that hurt the movies, but even the lack of continuity with Teddy’s absence. Though they cut nearly every aspect of Teddy from the movies, when the ghost of Lupin appeared towards the end of Deathly Hallows Part 2, he brought up that he wanted Harry to watch over his son. This ended up confusing a number of fans who had never read the books, as the movies had never brought up anything about Lupin having kids.

Home Market Releases For March 28th 2017

Its a good week for Pick of the Week contenders, as there are seven such releases on this weeks list. Unfortunately, none of them really scream out as The Pick of the Week. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is by far the biggest, but it is only out on Video on Demandright now, while Hidden Figures is the best, but again, it is only on VOD this week. There are also a couple of busted Oscar-bait films, Archer: Season Seven is only getting a DVD release, while the previous seasons came out on Blu-ray. In the end, I went with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXVIII, partially to celebrate the return of the show. More

Watson Enjoyed Working With Cuarn The Most On The Harry Potter Movies

Film: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone Not So New Review

Well, I shouldnt say I have a favorite directorthat wouldnt be very diplomatic, Watson shared with Interview Magazine. But one of the people I enjoyed working with most was Alfonso Cuarón. I have a real thing for Mexican directors. Clearly, Cuarón pushed the Harry Potter cast to a new place. And considering thats when the series really began to turn, it was likely for the best.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald embodies everything wrong with the continued expansion of the Harry Potter universe. The Harry Potter prequel could have explored a whole new corner of the wondrous world Rowling once built. Instead Grindelwald plays like a cash grab. Rowlings script tries to connect just about every new character it introduces in some forced, hackneyed and occasionally racist way to the characters we know and love from the original Harry Potter films. But the revelation that one character will eventually become a snake or that another is a long-lost relative of Albus Dumbledore only muddles the canon.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Cutting Peeves The Poltergeist

The Harry Potter movies cut a number of characters from the books that really should have appeared, including Winky the House Elf, Neville’s parents, and Teddy Lupin. One character who nearly did make it into the movies, though, was Peeves the Poltergeist. In the books, Peeves was one of the most prominent and memorable ghosts who roamed the halls of Hogwarts, regularly getting into trouble just like Fred and George.

He added a bit of humor throughout the series, quickly becoming a fan-favorite character for those who read the books. Peeves was originally supposed to appear in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but evidently, Harry Potter director Chris Columbus did not like how he looked after they shot his parts. Not wanting to try anything else, Columbus cut Peeves from the movie entirely.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Harry’s fifth year begins with him being attacked by Dementors in Little Whinging. Later, he finds out that the Ministry of Magic is in denial of Lord Voldemort’s return. Harry is also beset by disturbing and realistic nightmares, while Professor Umbridge, a representative of Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge, is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Harry becomes aware that Voldemort is after a prophecy which reveals: “neither can live while the other survives.” The rebellion involving the students of Hogwarts, secret organisation Order of the Phoenix, the Ministry of Magic, and the Death Eaters begins.

Why Did Chris Columbus Not Direct Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Chris Columbus’ decision not to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban was down to a lot of factors, with one of them being Columbus’ health condition at that time. In a meeting with The Hollywood Reporter, Columbus revealed the huge weariness he encountered after “ridiculously long” shooting plans for The Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets was the main factor why he left the team.

All Of Alfonso Cuaron’s Changes

Directed by David Yates. With Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert ...

After Chris Columbus left the franchise as one of the many Harry Potter directors following the disappointing response to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, director Alfonso Cuaron took hold of a nearly broken franchise and miraculously saved it. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban brought a number of huge changes to the Harry Potter franchise, including how Hogwarts looked, how certain characters looked, and the overall tone of the movie. Prisoner of Azkaban is still considered one of the best movies in the franchise because of how much Cuaron changed.

While the previous two movies were incredibly accurate to the books, Prisoner of Azkaban took quite a few leaps in order to make it work better as a movie. It should be noted that the movies after Prisoner of Azkaban did not make any drastic changes to the franchise, simply because the work that Cuaron did was fantastic. The tone that Cuaron set stuck around for the following five movies, and arguably saved the Harry Potter franchise. If not for Cuaron’s changes, it’s very possible that the Harry Potter series would not have gone on to be as successful as it is today.

Why Didnt Chris Columbus Direct All The Harry Potter Movies

Chris Columbus was the first director of the franchise, who got his position after convincing Warner Bros. to let him direct the movie adaptation of the first book.

Although the filming started in late September of 2000 Chris Columbus was heavily involved with the prefilming processes such as casting, which the director often describes as very intense. The filming lasted for 180 days and the filming of the second movie started a week after the first movie was released.

Chris Columbus expressed on multiple occasions that he wanted to come back for the last movie and that he was a little disappointed that director David Yates decided to stay on the project. Despite this, he did express that he was very impressed by Yates work and was ultimately happy that he did not take over the movie.
