Confundo Used To Confuse Opponents
Here’s an easy one. Confundo is the exact first-person conjugation of the Latin verb “confundere.” The prefix con- means “with or together” and the suffix -fundo means “to pour.” When put together, the word literally means something like “mix,” but is now figuratively used to be “jumble or confuse.”
Harry Potterss Use Of Curses
In one case, Harry Potter actually tried using this curse on Bellatrix Lestrange because he was absolutely furious that she killed Sirius Black, Harrys godfather.

Out of anger for Snapes outward betrayal, Harry tried to use it yet again only to find out that it was in fact Severus Snape the half-blood prince himself, making the spell entirely useless.
Crucio Is Instant Torture
Torture can be carried out in all kinds of ways, but most fictional characters don’t carry around torture devices with them. That is where the horribly overpowered spell Crucio comes in, the second of the three Unforgivable Curses. The caster just has to say “Crucio!” and intend harm to apply its effects in full.
The victim will feel like they’re being stabbed by hot knives from head to toe, a surefire way to torture information or compliance out of them. This curse doesn’t usually cause physical harm, either, so the caster can use Crucio as much as they like on a victim without accidentally killing them. Only extensive overuse of Crucio will cause legitimate mental damage, but that’s not much of a drawback.

Sectumsempra Is An Intangible Sword With Long Reach
Severus Snape invented this Dark spell all on his own, and it’s one of the most dangerous and frighteningly effective spells in the entire wizarding world. When cast, Sectumsempra will slash the opponent like a sword, as the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince novel described it, and cut deeply.

The effect takes place quickly, and the caster’s opponent/victim will have a very narrow window of opportunity to cast a defensive spell in time. Once Sectumsempra takes effect, the other party will be too badly injured to keep fighting, and the caster might even aim to kill. It’s truly a scary spell.
Harry Potter Spells That Debuted Infantastic Beasts
With November 2016s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and November 2018s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, J.K. Rowling came up with several new spells that should be considered canon. Here are the new spells we pulled from her screenplays, which were released concurrently with the movies.
Appare Vestigium: Tracking spell that materializes as a swirl of gold and shows traces of recent magical activity. Used by Newt to track beasts and Tina.

Protego Diabolica: Creates a protective circle those who are truly on Grindelwalds side can walk through the flame. Notably, Rowling describes the flame twice as a black fire, but in the movie its blue.
Surgito: Removes a love enchantment spell. Used by Newt on Jacob to remove Queenies enchantment.
Papyrus Reparo: Repairs a torn up postcard.
Ventus: A spell to create a hurricane-force wind, used by Newt to repel the Auror Stebbins.

The Vanishing Spell Makes Things Go Away
On its own, the Vanishing spell doesn’t seem that impressive, and it won’t knock out an enemy wizard or blow a hole in the wall. Still, spells can be overpowered in other ways, such as having a highly useful effect in exchange for very little cost or effort.

Bombarda is a powerful piece of magic that essentially causes an explosion. When used with Maxima, the explosion is powerful enough to send anyone in the vicinity flying. Even without accentuating the effect, Bombarda is strong enough to break down brick walls.
Umbridge uses this violent spell to blast her way into the Room of Requirement in The Order of the Phoenix when she’s hunting Dumbledore’s Army.

Protego Can Make For An Incredible Light Show
A Shield Charm, Protego is simple enough in its premise. It is used to block most spells, although it isn’t effective against Unforgivable Curses. However, Protego is shown to have more advanced variations that boost its effects considerably.
It isn’t until the arming of Hogwarts that the incredible potential of Protego Maxima is shown. Professors Flitwick and Slughorn team up with Molly Weasley to cast an almost impregnable barrier around the school, using Protego Maxima combined with Fianto Duri and Repello Inimicum to form these impressive defenses. The finished product is a seriously cool spectacle, even despite the tension from the impending battle.

Portraits In The Headmaster’s Office
The portraits in the Headmaster’s office depict all the former Heads of Hogwarts, with the exception of Dolores Umbridge. They advise the Headmaster and are “honour-bound to give service to the present headmaster” . Rowling has explained that portraits of past headteachers tend to be more realistic than most, as the subject in question usually imparts knowledge and teaches them how to behave before their death. The portrait of Snape was installed in the Headmaster’s Office at Harry’s request.

During a 2004 interview at the Edinburgh Book Festival, Rowling said:
Does anyone know where Avada Kedavra came from? It is an ancient spell in Aramaic, and it is the original of abracadabra, which means let the thing be destroyed. Originally, it was used to cure illness and the thing was the illness, but I decided to make it the thing as in the person standing in front of me. I take a lot of liberties with things like that. I twist them round and make them mine.
Rowling studied French and Classics at the University of Exeter, and the names of most charms, curses, jinxes, and spellsfrom Accio to Sectumsempraare based on Latin roots!
