Chapter 2 Harry Potter read aloud

To help children become super readers, one persistent theme is the power and fun of the read aloud. It’s a simple, yet transformative act that brings families together and helps kids learn thoughtfully.

Make the read aloud a daily experience for kids, and use best practices to keep them engaged. Before even opening the book, look at the cover the Harry Potter books have magical illustrations and make predictions together on what the book is about.

As you read, stop to ask your child questions about the text what shape is the scar on Harrys forehead? Who is their favourite character so far? Which shops would they like to visit in Diagon Alley? Read with enthusiasm and expression by making silly voices, faces, and gestures to bring the text to life. Dont be shy the more dramatic the better!

Also remember that reading aloud is for kids of ALL ages. So, start early and dont stop!

Who Narrates The Harry Potter Audiobooks

Rachel: Hey Peter! Ive been such a good little Hermione, finishing all my Harry Potter homework. I re-listened to both Jim Dale and Stephen Fry read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and I have FEELINGS! I went in with a bias for Jim Dale like a lot of Americans would, I bet, just because thats what we grew up with but Stephen Fry is the dark horse creeping up from behind. Its going to be hard to choose a winner.

Peter: Hello! And Ive also been a good well Dobby. Lets be honest. Ive been listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks, listening to comparison videos on YouTube between Jim Dale and Stephen Fry, and most crucially for me, Ive been reading The Prisoner of Azkaban to my kids at night, and thats influenced whose reading I prefer.

I think youre right about the Jim Dale American bias. I wonder if a lot of Americans even know that Stephen Fry did a whole set of Harry Potter audiobooks? Id bet not. I didnt until I saw a photo of Stephen Fry and J.K. Rowling together and looked it up. But can we declare one better than the other?

I think we can. And I think its Stephen Fry. I am prepared to go to the mat over this one. Which horse are you putting your money on?

Rachel: I think I gotta stay with my boy Jim Dale, and Im loving how in-it-to-win-it you are for Stephen Fry. Lay it on me.

Perhaps its no surprise, then, that many have turned to the Wizarding World as an escape from current events. The First Harry Potter Audiobook Voiced By Stephen Fry Is Now Free To Stream

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, which was released as Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone in the US, is now free to stream on Audible. Its part of a series of initiatives launched by JK Rowling and friends to keep everyone entertained while theyre cooped up at home. Better yet, its the version narrated by Stephen Fry, which has previously been difficult to legally access in the US.

As well as making the audiobook available, the series publishers are also temporarily relaxing licencing restrictions to allow teachers to read the books to their students in remote video lessons.

There are big debates about whether Stephen Frys or Jim Dales rendition of the audiobooks are better, but as a Brit who grew up listening to Frys version its always been the obvious choice for me. If youre an American whos never heard it then Id recommend you giving it a go even if, as TechCrunch notes, you might have a difficult job getting your hands on his recordings of the rest of the books.

As well as Frys English version, the free audiobook is also available in Spanish, French, Italian, German and Japanese.

Teachers are also now free to stream themselves reading the books for students

The Harry Potter Series: Ages And Stages

The first three Harry Potter books are great to read aloud to kids aged from about six or seven up. Certainly most children – both boys and girls – will love them from the age of eight.

If your eight-year-old is a fairly capable reader, he or she will probably be able to read the first three books independently. Remember though, that it can be fun to read aloud to older children and the Harry Potter books are great for this purpose because most adults enjoy the stories too.

The last four books are long and quite complex. Certainly many ten-year-olds will be quite capable of reading them but again, I think they’re great for reading aloud to kids aged up to about eleven.

Most teens will enjoy reading the books and in fact the seventh and final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is probably not suitable for readers under about thirteen. And if your teen does want to read the whole series, there are editions with more adult-looking covers so they’re not embarrassed to be seen reading what they probably think of as kids’ books.

The seven books in the Harry Potter series, in order, are:

A Few Thoughts About Reading Harry Potter

    I am a die-hard Harry Potter fan.

I talked about my familys history with Harry Potter last year, when I wrote about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, so I wont rehash it here, but suffice it to say I love Harry Potter.

As a librarian, Harry Potter was always something of a sticky issue because it was so wildly popular, which meant all the little kids wanted to read it too, and these first graders who wanted to feel grown-up would beg to check them out, even though I knew for a fact they could hardly read, and theyd just carry those giant books around for a week without really being able to read them.

I didnt want to be the librarian who forbade children to check out a book they really wanted to check out, but I also didnt want them to have nothing they could actually read for the week.

I finally settled on the deeply unsatisfying method of suggesting they get something else and then letting them get Harry Potter if they insisted.

And, of course, the books get darker and more complex as they go along, which was perfect when you were growing up alongside the books, and less perfect when you start the first one at age six.

All of which is to say that when I frequently get asked what the right age to read Harry Potter is, I dont have a great answer.

We read Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone and she seemed to like it, but I could tell she was having a hard time keeping track of all the characters.

    The Harry Potter Series

The Harry Potter series by J K Rowling is brilliant to read aloud to your child but when’s the best age to start?

My husband started reading the first Harry Potter book – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – to our twin sons when they were six. .

This was in 2001 when everyone was first talking about the books and the four of us were keen to find out what all the fuss was about.

And for our two at least, six turned out to be exactly the right age to start reading the Harry Potter series. The boys absolutely loved reading a chapter a night and their dad and I also loved discovering the story with them.

Each Harry Potter book is just a little bit more complex than the one before. For our boys and for millions of other kids around the world, this meant that they were pretty much growing up with Harry and his friends as they read their way through the series.

We read the first three books aloud as a family and have some very special memories of these times. My daughter was only three when we were reading them but she snuggled up on the bed to listen too and the experience seems to have inspired in her a life-long love of all things Harry Potter.By the time Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire came out in 2005, my boys were eight and keen to tackle it on their own. The only problem was, they both wanted to be the first in the family to read it!

Use New Kinds Of Reading Sources

Beyond the traditional read aloud, stories can come from a variety of sources, including poems, oral tales, and wordless books! Technology can also be a great outlet think about ebooks or audiobooks.

Think outside of the box when it comes to reading and watch your child light up with excitement. Making reading fun fosters a love of reading and captivating our kids with great stories is where true magic lies.
