Is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child worth it?

Without question, you will want to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Curran theater in San Francisco. Now that they’ve rewritten it, and it is much more concise since it is only one show, it makes it easy. If you have kids, it also makes it easier since they won’t have to wait for the second section of it if you are too busy doing other things around the city by the bay.

Is it worth it? If you are a Harry Potter fan, you are going to LOVE this show. In total it’s more than 2 hours of theater, and the story line is amazing as it’s full of all of the Harry Potter tricks and majesty that we all love. If you have the time and the budget, I highly recommend it to all fans.

Even if you aren’t a big Harry Potter fan, but love the theater, this is also a must see for you. The show is really well done and one of my favorite shows on stage. Being that they’ve completely rewritten it, even if you’ve seen it before, there are all kinds of new stage sets, songs, and magic galore!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child San Francisco Play Review

Harry Potter is about to cast his last spell in San Francisco, as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child plans to end its run at the Curran Theater on Sept. 11.

The most important effect of the closure, which producers Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions announced Thursday, July 28, is to raise exciting questions about the future of the Curran, which is among the grandest theatrical venues in San Francisco.

Before a multiyear run of Harry Potter, which began in 2019 and will have hit 393 performances by the time it closes, the Curran was home to an array of high-budget but daring theater that few other venues could or would pull off, including multiple productions by boundary-torpedoing maximalist Taylor Mac, Complicites aural odyssey The Encounter, a pre-Broadway run of the equally wacky and trenchant Soft Power by David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori.

During the run of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child a special effects spectacle about an adult Harry Potter and his misfit son, Albus Ambassador Theatre Group leased the Curran from owner Carole Shorenstein Hays, the visionary but eccentric San Francisco producer of Broadway shows, most famously Fences, which won Tonys both for its original Broadway production and its revival.

The play was exceptional, the Theater, old was okay. The staff was exceptional, prices were high , but overall they do a good job with the facility.

The Curran Theater originally opened in 1922. It is an older but classic theater venue seating over 1650 people and has been renovated. The theater does not feature large plush seating or wide aisles and the lobby can feel crowded. There are newer, roomier and more comfortable venues, but few theaters that have done it better for as long as the Curran. It is a very good place to enjoy live plays or musicals.

Be warned The Ambassador Theater Group leased The Curran as of July 2019 and the customer service is just terrible and frankly, inappropriately condescending to customers. I purchased tickets for my son and myself in March to Harry Potter and since then a work commitment that it out of my control has come up making Part 1 impossible for us to attend. I reached out to see if I could exchange my tickets for the same seats on another set of nights and was told they don’t offer exchanges which wasn’t explicitly specified when i ordered in March 2019. When I reached out to customer service they suggested I give my $300 ticket to a friend to take my young son to the show. And signed the email Enjoy! We won’t be purchasing tickets to The Curran anymore. Terrible customer service.

Magical Experience

Lyric Theatre – New York

This play was loaded with the kinds of special effects we have read about in the books and only thought were possible in the movies. Cast and story were super! Feel extremely lucky to have seen the last showings of this play before Broadway was shutdown for the Coronavirus. When it reopens, GO!

Cursed child was great

Lyric Theatre – New York

I took my son to see the play for his birthday. So grateful we got to see the last show before Broadway went dark. The storyline was fantastic and the plays special effects were amazing as well. The actors were enjoyable and very entertaining. My son thought Scorpius was hilarious. The theatre seating was comfortable but not always easy to see over the heads of people sitting directly in front of us. Price was reasonable for where we were sitting. Would definitely go again for the right price for seats.

Absolutely fantastic!!!!

Lyric Theatre – New York

Unimaginably worth it

Lyric Theatre – New York

I opted for the “next-to-cheapest” tickets but in hindsight would have gone up to the next price level without hesitation. If you’re unsure about spending more, it’s completely worth it to choose closer seats. The script was not life-changing for me so I wasn’t expecting to be blown away. I was. This is one of those things you have to experience in person. Trust the reviews!! It’s like watching the entire HP film franchise being crafted right in front of your eyes.
