Years Later And Streaming Harry Potter Is Still Too Complicated
Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone hit movie theaters 20 years ago today. It kicked off the eight-film adaptation of the massively popular childrens book series, which concluded with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 a decade ago in 2011.
In that time, the Potter films have become a magnet for marathoning, driven in no small part by fan-favorite Freeform broadcasts of the films. ABC actually picked up the rights to the series just weeks after the first film had even hit theaters, reportedly spending roughly $140 million to be able to broadcast the first two movies.

Once Rowling found massive success, she achieved the Stephen King-like power to publish books of any length, which she took advantage of by making the later novels in the Harry Potter series into massive tomes. The novel of Goblet of Fire which, like the movie, chronicles the events of the Triwizard Tournament between rival schools of magic is one of the longest books, coming in at 734 pages, and the screenwriters had to confront the problem of what to change, compress, or leave out entirely. Readers were not altogether happy with some of the omissions, but the movie was still a huge popular success and the second highest-grossing film of the year behind Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

If both the story and the special effects are more than a tad reminiscent of Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, nobody cared by this point. Rowlings Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them wasnt a novel in the Potterverse, but rather a slim illustrated compendium of magical creatures within the universe written by the fictional Newt Scamander. It would take great imagination along with an army of screenwriters to concoct a story from a book that has no proper story. But franchises have been undaunted by greater narrative obstacles . And so Newt became a flesh and blood character played by Eddie Redmayne who becomes embroiled in magical events in America 70 years before the events of the earlier series.
