Why Did Dumbledore Have To Die In Harry Potter

Why Dumbledore Pleaded with Snape Before Death – Harry Potter Explained

Over the course of seven books and eight films, Harry Potters adventures packed many twists and turns, but few shocked fans as much as Albus Dumbledores death at the climax of the sixth story, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. J.K. Rowlings wizarding saga was already taking a darker turn as Harrys nemesis, He Who Shall Not Be Named, and his army of Death Eaters publicly revealed themselves, but Dumbledores death darkened the story further, setting the tone for the final volume of the wizarding saga.

It wasnt just the death of this well-loved character that was shocking, but the way he died. In a stand-off high up in a Hogwarts tower, it was Severus Snape who cast the fatal spell. The suspicions Harry Potter had long held about his former Potions Master appeared to be confirmed in that moment.

Dumbledore Asks Snape To Kill Him

The first and ultimate reason why did Snape kill Dumbledore is because Dumbledore himself asks Snape to kill him. It is because Dumbledore is already dying and will die eventually after all. So to prevent humiliating and painful death, Dumbledore asks Snape to kill him instead. So Snape actually shows him mercy and loyalty.

Dumbledore is dying because of the curse of the Marvolo Gaunts ring, which is also a Resurrection Stone and one of Voldemorts horcruxes. Anyone who has the courage to wear it, will be cursed to death in an instant. Dumbledore made a mistake by put on the ring to redeem his family and made amend for his past. Then he gets cursed. Anyone shouldve been dead instantly, but because of his poweras well as Snapeshe can slow down the curse, although he will still die anyway.

Not only dying because of the ring, Dumbledore was also dying because he had to drink a potion in order to destroy Voldemorts horcrux.

Furthermore, Dumbledore wants to save Draco Malfoy as well, because actually Draco is the one who was ordered by Voldemort to kill him. Knowing that Draco does not have the courage to do that, Dumbledore asks Snape to kill him.

Beside, Dumbledore wants to save the Elder Wand. The Elder Wand is the strongest wand ever exists, and the way to get it is to kill the former owner. Since Dumbledore trusts Snape, he wants Snape to get the wand.

Why Was Snape Loyal To Dumbledore

Snape was loyal to Dumbledore because he was protecting single thing left by Lilly after her Harry. HE HAS HER EYES SEVERUS the words that made snape remember all the memories of his first and only love. He hated Harry because of James but he wanted him alive because of Lilly and Dumbledore was doing that.

How Many People Did Snape Actually Care About

Snape is often depicted as a tragic, friendless loner who only ever loved Harry’s mother, Lily, but is it possible that he had forged emotional bonds with other people? Most likely, yes. Snape clearly cared for his mother, even taking her last name just so he could be associated with her. Given how much Snape knew about the Wizarding World before his arrival to Hogwarts, we can only assume that his mother had spent time teaching him. It’s also possible that he sincerely liked Lucius and Narcissa. Snape would have never called Dumbledore his friend, but at the very least he respected him.

Why did snape kill dumbledore

No one was expecting Pettigrew’s betrayal. Remember that it was Lily and James who made Peter the Keeper a few days before the attack. Dumbledore likely didn’t know about this, and even if he did, it seemed a reasonable choice at the moment.

As to why he continued to work for Dumbledore, this is the moment when Dumbledore asks Snape to help him protect Harry:

And what use would that be to anyone? said Dumbledore coldly. If you loved Lily Evans, if you truly loved her, then your way forward is clear.

Snape seemed to peer through a haze of pain, and Dumbledores words appeared to take a long time to reach him.

What what do you mean?

You know how and why she died. Make sure it was not in vain. Help me protect Lilys son.

He does not need protection. The Dark Lord has gone

The Dark Lord will return, and Harry Potter will be in terrible danger when he does.

There was a long pause, and slowly Snape regained control of himself, mastered his own breathing. At last he said, Very well. Very well. But never never tell, Dumbledore! This must be between us! Swear it! I cannot bear . . . especially Potters son . . . I want your word!Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, chapter 33 “The Prince’s Tale” emphasis mine.

In the films, Dumbledore additionally says “If you truly loved her…” which seems to swing Snape to his side :

Voldemort ordered to kill Snape because he thought that he was the master of Elder Wand an immensely strong and powerful wand that Voldemort deeply desired, as well as one of the Deathly Hallows. but in reality, Harry was the master of Elder Wand. After Snapes death, Harry ensured that his portrait must remain in Hogwarts and he honored him as a hero, despite having personal differences. Furthermore, Harry named his son Albus Severus Potter inspiring Snape and Albus Dumbledore who help Harry to kill the evil Voldemort.

Snapes Legacy Lives On

After giving his life to defeat Voldemort, Harry is able to return to the realm of the living and face Voldemort one last time, and as the true master of the Elder Wand, he brings the Dark Lord down for good. In the aftermath of the battle, Harry gets the chance to live out his life, get married, and have children, and his second youngest son, Albus Severus, carries on Snapes legacy, especially as Harry tells his son that he named him for two of the bravest men hed ever met.

Ultimately, Albus Severus as detailed in the Tony Award-winning play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is sorted into Slytherin just like one of this two namesakes, eventually becoming close friends with Scorpius Malfoy and setting off on a time-bending adventure befitting his father and both of the men for whom he was named. Snape may have been a villain throughout his life, but Harry made sure to remember him as a hero.

What Was Draco Malfoys Patronus

J.K. Rowling says Draco doesnt have a patronus because he never learned the spell but I think its because he doesnt have any powerful happy memories to use. For Umbridge it was necessary to learn to cast a Patronus as she works in the Ministry. Remember: the Ministry worked with Dementors at that time.

The Dark Lord knew that there had been many mistakes with regard to trying to kill Harry Potter, and he knew he had made mistakes in his methods of trying to kill him. However, he was fairly sure he knew what he had done wrong, and that he knew how to fix it.

Again, Voldemort looked up at the slowly revolving body as he went on, I shall attend to the boy in person. There have been too many mistakes where Harry Potter is concerned. Some of them have been my own. That Potter lives is due more to my errors, than to his triumphs.

The company round the table watched Voldemort apprehensively, each of them, by his or her expression, afraid that they might be blamed for Harry Potters continued existence. Voldemort, however, seemed to be speaking more to himself than to any of them, still addressing the unconscious body above him.

I have been careless, and so have been thwarted by luck and chance, those wreckers of all but the best laid plans. But I know better now. I understand those things that I did not understand before. He also wanted to do it himself to prove that he was stronger than Harry Potter.

He therefore didnt want anyone else to kill Harry Potter and deprive him of this chance to show that he was indeed a stronger and more powerful wizard than Harry Potter, which he could not do if someone else was the one who killed Harry.

Narcissa Malfoy Asks Snape To Help Draco

Another reason why did Snape kill Dumbledore is because there is this Unbreakable Vow between Severus Snape and Narcissa Malfoy, Dracos mother.

Draco was tasked by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore, which is obviously not an easy task to do. As a mother, Narcissa was really scared that Draco would fail thus trigger the anger of the Dark Lord. To prevent this, Snape then made the Unbreakable Vow to protect Draco.

At the beginning of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Narcissa and Belatrix visit Snape, in which Narcissa begs to Snape to protect Draco. Snape made the Unbreakable Vow that means Snape will die if Draco dies . So Snape has no choice other than to make sure that Dracos task is done.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

This is one of the episodes where Snape demonstrated his expertise in making portions by brewing the famous Wolfsbane potion. This Portion was brewed in defense against Remus Lupin- the professor of Dark arts.

Throughout this episode, Snape suspected that Professor Lupin had helped Sirius Black- Harrys godfather enter the Hogwarts castle. Sirus had been convicted wrongly at that time of killing Peter Pettigrew and some bystanders. All these suspicions Snape had for Lupin were based on his friendship with Harrys father and Sirius.

Snape tried to apprehend Sirius towards the end of the movie by making the students and teachers think Lupin was a Werewolf, which made Lupin resign his position in the school.

This episode also revealed the connection between Snape and James- Harry Potters father.

What Powers Did Harry Have That Voldemort Didnt

Why did Dumbledore trust Snape?

Voldemort tried to kill Harry when he was just an infant. He should have killed him, but when Lily sacrificed herself to protect her son, Voldemorts curse rebounded and wounded him. It only left a small mark on Harry.

It is often said in the movies that it was the power of love. Now, having this world filled with power and magic and being saved by the mothers love is beautiful but kind of disappointing as an explanation. Perhaps the curse never hit Harry right due to Lilys protection, a charm, or Voldemorts wand. There are many theories.

It is also mentioned it was the kind of power Voldemort didnt expect it was old magic. Lilys sacrifice resided in Harrys blood ever since she has protected him. The killing curse rebounded and destroyed Voldemorts body. He had also had a part of his soul latch onto Harry the only living thing it found, and so another Horcrux was created. But this one was not planned.

Harrys parents were Aurors, they wanted to fight Voldemort and found themselves with a son in the middle of a war. So Lily Potter needed to take action and protect her family. This protection stayed with him which was seen after the last battle.

In Deathly Hallows, when Harry goes into the forest to fight Voldemort to sacrifice himself, he still has a part of Voldemorts soul within him without even knowing. But the protection from his mother is still there.

Harry Potter And The Order Of Phoenix

Snape returned with a more prominent role in the fifth episode of Harry Potter. Voldemort had returned to a mortal body, and Snape had continued working as a double agent for Voldemort.

Snape and Sirius had several altercations in this series, and he even taunts Sirius about his inability to have a role in the orders mission because of his fugitive status. Harry felt Sirius took many risks because of Snapes taunts.

Later in the series, Dumbledore approached Snape to teach Harry the Occlumency, which protects the mind against external influence. Harry also prematurely enters Dumbledores Pensieve, where he saw his father, James, and Sirius bullying Snape and Snape, calling Harrys mother, an offensive name- Mudblood.

Sirius later died in this series, and Harry held Snape partly for it.

Dumbledore’s Ambiguity When It Came To Snape’s Soul Ripping Apart

When Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him, apparently to save Draco’s soul from being damaged beyond repair, Snape asked him about his own soul– “And my soul, Dumbledore? Mine?” To this, the older man replied that Snape would have to decide whether helping him, i.e. Dumbledore, avoid pain and humiliation would harm his soul.

Like most of their relationship, this instance of conversation too was ambiguous. One could presume that Dumbledore wasn’t particularly keen to worry about Snape’s soul, which he perhaps thought was already damaged enough. In fact, much of the interactions between these two characters seem to be about Dumbledore giving some order, or even sternly reminding Snape of his duties, and Snape agreeing to them in his usual surly manner.

WHY DID DUMBLEDORE TRUST SEVERUS SNAPE SO MUCH?

When Snape realized that the prophecy by Professor Trelawney referred to Lily Evan’s son, he desperately asked Dumbledore to hide Lily and her family from the wrath of Voldemort, but not before telling him that he had already asked the Dark Lord to spare Lily in exchange for her son.

It was at this point that Dumbledore spoke these words–“you disgust me”– and Rowling writes that Harry had never heard such contempt in his voice. For somebody who so clearly loathed Snape for his rather twisted thought, it seems unlikely that Dumbledore would have been very friendly with him afterward. They developed a mutual respect, that goes without saying. But friends? Seems unlikely.

Upon their shared arrival at Hogwarts, Lily is furious at Snape for sabotaging her relationship with her sister, and matters only get worse from there. At the Sorting Ceremony, Lily is sorted into Gryffindor, while Snape ends up in Slytherin, ensuring that the two friends are separated for their entire tenure at Hogwarts.

While Snape and Lily try to remain close despite their differences, Lily disapproves of Snapes friends all of whom later become Death Eaters under Voldemort while Snape cant stand James Potter, one of Gryffindors most popular students, whos clearly carrying a torch for Lily. Its especially bad since James has a penchant for bullying Snape. Though Lily assures her friend that she cant stand James, an altercation with the young bully ends in nastiness when Snape calls Lily a Mudblood, a horrible slur referring to Muggle-borns and it effectively ends their friendship forever.

Though Snape begs for her forgiveness, particularly because Lily was defending him against James, he cant justify hurting Lily, and she gives up on him for good.
