Every Harry Potter fan knows why Harry survived the first time Voldemort tried to kill him. Its all thanks to his mothers love. Yet that protection wore off once Harry reached the age of 17, which he had by the time he met Voldemort in the forest.
This time things are more complicated. His mothers protection does play a role, which well get into later. For now, all you need to know is that it had supposedly worn off when Harry met Voldemort again since he had reached the age of maturity in the Wizarding World and was no longer living with his Muggle aunt and uncle.
One of the complicated reasons why Harry survived has to do with the Elder Wand. Though Voldemort had the wand at the time, Harry was its true master. Therefore the wand wouldnt allow Voldemort to kill Harry. When Voldemort tried, he instead destroyed the Horcrux that he never intended to make in Harry.
How Did Harry Potter Come Back To Life
The Harry Potter franchise contains many different emotional deaths and one such should have been Harry himself. However, turns out Harry actually comes back to life after he got hit by the Killing curse. This confused many fans since the Killing curse was presented as a piece of magic that allows you to instantly kill your opponents. So, how did Harry avoid death and come back to life?
The truth is Harry never actually died. His mothers protection lived on in Voldemorts blood after he incorporated it in the potion which brought him back to his physical body. This is why Harry got to heaven, but since he could choose to stay alive he managed to come back to the real world.

Why Didn’t Harry Die When Voldemort Killed Him
During the Battle of Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows, Harry finally surrenders to Voldemort, after discovering that a part of Voldemort’s soul lives inside him, following their first encounter at Godric’s Hollow all those years ago, which also explains his connections to the dark lord.
In other words, Harry is one of the seven Horcruxes, each of which contains a fragment of Voldemort’s soul, and all of which need to be destroyed in order to finally defeat him. With only two left Nagini and Harry himself the Boy Who Lived gives in to Voldemort’s demands and meets him in the Forbidden Forest.
There, Voldemort performs the Killing Curse on him, and Harry falls to the ground, dead. What follows is an ethereal dream-like scene where Harry meets Dumbledore at a limbo-version of Kings Cross Station. Beneath a bench, they find a bloodied and deformed version of Voldemort, in a terribly weakened state. This represents the Horcrux that lives or lived inside Harry, and is now dying. After hitting Harry Potter with the Killing Curse, Voldemort has unintentionally destroyed the penultimate Horcrux.
What Happened When Voldemort Tried To Kill Harry

Voldemort was not able to kill Harry because Harry was the true master of the Elder Wand. So, therefore, Harry survived. Instead, Voldemort unknowingly made himself more vulnerable by trying to kill Harry since instead, he destroyed the Horcrux inside Harry. Harry ended up going to a kind of in-between place, where he meets Dumbledore and Voldemort is temporarily knocked out as well.
Harry is also still somewhat protected by his mothers love for him. And this is all Voldemorts own doing. When he was rebuilding his body during Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he used Harrys blood to do so. Therefore, he took some of Lilys protection into himself.

Why Didn’t Harry Die When Voldemort Died
We all know how the final fight ends while Harry and Voldemort duel with their wands, Neville Longbottom successfully lays waste to Nagini using the Sword of Gryffindor, destroying Voldemort’s final Horcrux. But this isn’t what ultimately defeats Voldemort though of course without killing Nagini, killing Voldemort would have remained impossible. But Voldemort is now simply left vulnerable to death, like any other witch or wizard. He is mortal.
With the final Horcrux out of the way, Harry is able to defeat the dark lord once and for all, while also disarming him of the Elder Wand a weapon that never really belonged to Voldemort in the first place, which is why it never worked for him properly. And so Voldemort is dust. But why didn’t Harry die along with him? Wasn’t Harry one of his Horcruxes? Yes he was, but remember that that part of him had already been destroyed by Voldemort in Harry had no reason to die with’ Voldemort there was no remaining connection between the two.
He Didn’t Need The Resurrection Stone
Upon going gentle into that good night, Harry awakened in what appeared to be a milky white vision of King’s Cross Station, where he’d hopped onto Platform 9¾ so many times before. Dumbledore awaited him with news that he’d successfully killed off the part of Voldemort that remained inside of him in the process of dying, and that he had a choice to board a train back to the realm of the living or to just move on … to where, he didn’t say.
Harry, knowing his battle wasn’t done, opted for the former. He left behind the scaly, fetal version of Voldemort that had infected his brain for so long, and used his perceived death to gain an advantage as Hagrid carried him back to the school, with an unknowing Voldemort bragging about his conquest to garner new recruits from the ravaged student pool.

Overly Powerful: The Killing Curse Was Nearly Unstoppable
One of the main reasons Voldemort is overpowered is the existence of Avada Kedavra. While it marks sense there would be curses that could kill people, the Killing Curse is too powerful and unstoppable. Theres nothing that can be done to protect against it, so theres nothing to keep Voldemort from killing whoever he wants.
It would have made more sense if there were a few more weak spots and ways to defend from this spell. Harry is the only person who ever survives it, and this just seems too imbalanced.
The End Of Lord Voldemort
But the journey to Voldemorts end wasnt easy or quick. Key elements in his destruction were Horcruxes.
A Horcrux is an object that is used in an attempt to become immortal. A Dark witch or wizard split their soul into fragments and hide one fragment in a Horcrux.
They serve as a form of container in which a part of a soul is hidden as a way to protect it. When a witch or wizard is killed, their body is harmed but their soul remains untouched, but when a Horcrux is destroyed, so is the piece of the soul that is hidden in it.
They can only be created after committing the supreme act of evil, murder. Because Horcruxes were precious to those who made them, certain measures have been put in place to protect them, such as curses and counter-charms. The Horcrux is considered the most terrible of all Dark magic and dark arts. Lord Voldermort was the only known person to create more than one Horcrux.
The main purpose of a Horcrux is to bind its creator to the mortal realm for the sake of obtaining immortality. For as long as there is at least one Horcrux the creators soul will be bound to the world of the living. Therefore, if the creators body is destroyed, his soul will stay as a spirit instead of passing through to the other side.
Elder Wand is another important aspect in the battle to defeat the Dark Lord.

They Could But They Chose Not To
This is answered in the books on which the movies are based. After Sirius’s death, Harry asks Nearly Headless Nick, the ghost he knows best, whether there’s any possibility of his godfather coming back as a ghost:
Sirius, like Cedric and Harry’s parents, was far too adventurous to take the coward’s path and choose that “feeble imitation of life” rather than continuing on into the great unknown.
JK Rowling also addressed this directly in an interview in 2004 :
If Harry had a portrait of his parents it would not help him a great deal. If he could meet them as ghosts, that would be a much more meaningful interaction, but as Nick explained at the end of PhoenixI am straying into dangerous territory, but I think you probably know what he explainedthere are some people who would not come back as ghosts because they are unafraid, or less afraid, of death.
That last bold quote sums it all up really.
Nagini Was Integral To Voldemort’s Return To Power
Nagini was the longtime serpent companion of Voldemort.
Though the exact date and location of their meeting are unknown, we do know that she was with him when he was regaining strength in Albania. Her venom was also part of a potion brewed by Peter Pettigrew that helped sustain his bodiless form.
Eventually, the snake became Voldemort’s final Horcrux after the murder of Bertha Jorkins.

Defeated Easily: Harry Was Able To Escape Him Multiple Times
While compared to the general wizarding population, Voldemort is almost god=like in power, Harry is the exception. He might not have the same kind of abilities that Voldmeot does, but he has deep protective magic, along with the wand connection, that allows him to survive multiple Killing Curses.
Voldemort was also filled with hubris in believing over and over that he could easily defeat Harry, and this ended up being his downfall.

Lilys Protection In Voldemorts Blood Saved Harry
When Lord Voldemort rebuilt his physical body in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he used Harrys blood. That ingredient would go on to aid in the Dark Lords downfall. He was given a choice to die and finally rest, or return home, and he chose the latter. Nagini remained as Voldemorts last Horcrux until Neville destroyed her with the Gryffindors Sword. With no Horcruxes remaining as Voldemorts primary defenses, this left the Dark Lord vulnerable.

In the week before its release, a number of texts purporting to be genuine leaks appeared in various forms. On 16 July, a set of photographs representing all 759 pages of the US edition was leaked and was fully transcribed prior to the official release date. If you aren’t familiar with the series, then here’s skinny on the stone: It was the second “Hallow” created. Hallows are magical items / relics that are capable of some truly wondrous feats.
The Resurrection Stone was the second Hallow ever created, and it’s rumored that Death itself had made it. When combined with the two other Hallows the Cloak of Invisibility and the Elder Wand the possessor would become the “Master of Death.”
Harry supposedly drops the stone for several reasons, one being because it didn’t truly bring people back, just “shades” of them as Redditor Talgori puts it.
Another reason for Harry ultimately dropping the stone is that if he were to get rid of it, then that would mean no one else could become a Master of Death. This means that Voldemort would never be able to simultaneously possess all three of the Hallows.
Interestingly enough though, the rumored way to become a true “Master of Death” in the Harry Potter series doesn’t exactly pertain to gaining ownership of the Hallows.
