Cursed Child Candidate #: Scorpius Malfoy
Could everyones favorite new character, Scorpius Scorpion King Malfoy, actually be the titular Cursed Child? Although he is arguably less pivotal to the plot than Delphi and Albus, Scorpius is not only the emotional heart of the play hes also the only character who is actually associated with the word cursed.
Over the course of the play, we slowly get the story of Scorpius mother Astoria, a tragic figure who passed away after giving birth to him, wanting desperately to leave Draco with a piece of herself even knowing it would kill her faster. Her family was cursed, you see.
Scorpius is left with the guilt of feeling like hes killed his mother, all the while having to deal with the vicious rumors that claim he is actually the son of Voldemort. Like both Delphi and Albus, Scorpius is also trapped by his family legacy, but unlike both of them he actually breaks his own curse over the course of the play and becomes a hero.
The main thing speaking against Scorpius being the Cursed Child is that he doesnt really interact with or influence Harry. The play is called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, after all, which would traditionally mean that the object/character mentioned in the title is directly related to Harrys story but then again, Cursed Child is hardly a traditional Harry Potter story.
Transforming The Costumes And Set Of Moulin Rouge Into A Living Toulouse
For Moulin Rouge!, British American costume designer Catherine Zuber took inspiration from everywhere: art, fashion and culture, both past and present.
“I’ve always really enjoyed merging different periods,” Zuber tells ABC Arts. “When designing I always love to look at contemporary research as well as that of the past. It makes more fun, more creative and more accessible to the audience.”
There’s a moment in Moulin Rouge! the Musical where the scenery and costumes transform into a living, breathing artwork inspired by French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Zuber describes it as “a moment of poetic stillness in our story”.
“It was great to research all of the amazing paintings and illustrations done by Toulouse-Lautrec, which were so inspiring and so beautiful,” says Zuber.
Zuber and the show’s scenic designer Derek McLane chose Toulouse-Lautrec artworks that they felt the audience would recognise: like a performer wearing a hat adorned with a vibrant flower and a slithering snake-wrapped dress .
“The team handpainted brushstrokes onto the costumes based on the Toulouse-Lautrec illustrations which were made of natural fabrics that would take paint well,” explains Zuber.
“When you look at the original paintings you’ll see a skirt, or a corset, or a frock coat and they are bold and graphic and beautiful We tried to recreate that in the costumes.”
Moulin Rouge! the Musical runs until April 29 at Regent Theatre, Melbourne and from May at the Capitol Theatre, Sydney.

You can enjoy Harry Potter and the Cursed Child if youve never watched the films. But, to get the full experience from the play, wed recommend watching the Harry Potter films or reading the original Harry Potter novels. The play is a continuation of the novels, set 19 years after the ending of the final book.

Who Wrote Harry Potter And The Cursed Child
The Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play is by Jack Thorne. However, its based on original ideas by Thorne, John Tiffany and the Harry Potter novelist J. K. Rowling. Jack Thorne is an English playwright whose works include the now annual play adaptation of A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic. Hes also adapted Woyzeck, as well as penned the television adaptation of His Dark Materials.

Response Within The Harry Potter Fandom
The response to the play from the Harry Potterfandom was polarizing.Fans responded positively to the play and its characters, with Scorpius Malfoy being particularly popular. Some fans commented that the dialogue between the familiar characters was “spot on”, celebrating it as a faithful continuation of the books. Others have noted that the play sheds light on some of the relationships between the characters, such as Harry and Dumbledore’s. The response had been particularly positive among fans who watched the play on stage.
Some fans however, said the story seemed more “like a work of fan fiction” and said that it diverged from previously established rules of the universe, criticising the script’s characterisation. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play that is presented in two parts. Theyre intended to be watched in Part One, then Part Two. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child = Harry Potter and His Son Albus?
As much as we love Scorpius Malfoy and Hermione Granger, the real main characters of Cursed Child are Harry and Albus Potter. The father-son dynamic dictates the story, with Albus really carrying the plot forward.
Like Delphi, Albus is cursed by his heritage , and everything he does is motivated by his complicated relationship with his father, and his rejection of the Potter family legacy.
As the main child in the story, it might be logical to conclude that hes also the child the title refers to, and the fact that he ends up in Slytherin, estranged from his family , might qualify as Albus being cursed. Cursed to be the black sheep of the family, cursed to be the spare, and cursed with making all the wrong choices.

I met her first, and I already had a soft spot for her because she used to write in the cafe of the Traverse Theater in Edinburgh when I was the director.
