Who Composed The Music For Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1

Harry Potter – Famous Composers play the Main Theme?

Alexandre DesplatHarry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Pt 1/Music composed by

The score for Deathly Hallows Part 1 is composed by Golden Globe award-winning and Academy Award-winning film composer Alexandre Desplat. Desplat follows John Williams, Patrick Doyle, and Nicholas Hooper in composing music for the Harry Potter series.

Hogwarts Hymn Patrick Doyle

Patrick Doyle stayed true to predecessor John Williams traditional orchestration style, but made an effort to emphasise the style of British classical music. As Musicnotes.com note, this track is a great example of highlighting British culture. Heard fully during the films end credits, Hogwarts Hymn brings to mind Elgar its both inspiring, but also has quite a sad feel and builds to a massive orchestral finish there are definitely echoes of that English classic, Jerusalem.

Dumbledores Army Nicholas Hooper

Appearing in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledores Army is one of the more playful tracks in our list as Movie-wave.net said, its a really charming theme, perhaps something that might feel at home in a Jane Austen adaptation. Its a totally uplifting sequence, where Harry is teaching the army to become powerful wizards, and theyre creating Patronuses.

Professor Umbridge Nicholas Hooper

Ah, dear Dolores, with her pastel-coloured cardis and fondness for felines. Has there ever been a character in literature who looked so cuddly, but underneath was so viciously spiky? Nicholas Hoopers bouncy theme is introduced early in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and pops up throughout the rest of the film.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Oscar-nominated Scottish composer Patrick Doyle had to build on the foundations laid by John Williams, but take the music into murkier emotional waters, as the Potter story becomes a lot darker with this instalment his opener, the menacing The Story Continues, sets out his stall.

Plus, there are plenty of new characters to introduce including the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students. Not to mention the gang are dabbling in a bit of YA romance with the first hints of this in the beautiful Harry in Winter.

What Is The Harry Potter Theme Song Called

The Harry Potter theme song is called Hedwigs Theme, most recognizable on an instrument called a celesta, which sounds like a music box. John Williams created the iconic theme song, which appears in all the original movies and now also the Fantastic Beasts films.

The first few bars of the theme usually appear at the very beginning of the film over the Warner Bros. Pictures logo and title card.

Harrys Wondrous World John Williams

Played by a full orchestra, this is the track that opens Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. Magical and majestic, it really sets the tone for the audiences entrance into a world of wonders. It features Hedwigs Theme in the first few bars, before diverging into a new theme created just for Harry. The theme is used in the closing credits of both The Philosophers Stone and The Chamber of Secrets. Its both lyrical and hopeful, and full of excitement, joy and triumph, with a heroic feel.

Harry Potter And The Classic Film Score

The other group of posters argue that Williamss music has become repetitive, that he has followed a humdrum formula since his glory days in the 1980s, and that Hoopers first contribution better matched the changing tone of the films emotional and dramatic trajectory. Hooper himself, in his If Magazine interview, indicated that his style better reflects the more adult themes of the new film: Having looked closely at John Williams writing I decided that I would be better to find my own route rather than try to imitate such a master. This also met with David Yates’ approval as he was looking for the music to take a different direction in these darker films.

This debate is a microcosm of many of the questions that have surrounded film music since its earliest days. The debate whether Williams or Hoopers approach best serves the Potter franchise reprises many of the arguments about musical taste in the 20th and 21st centuries. We see again how strongly old-fashioned Romanticism continues to capture the publics imagination.

  • When Ginny Kissed Harry
  • Which Other Themes Did John Williams Write

We hear Hedwigs Theme everywhere throughout the score even in moments without the owl himself. But there are a number of other brilliant themes swirling through the franchise that deserve mention.

Leaving Hogwarts is a particularly beautiful motif that frequently appears to remind us of Harrys connection to Hogwarts the home where the young wizard has found he truly belongs .

The third instalment , and the final scored by John Williams, took on a darker feel under new director Alfonso Cuaron.

A Window to the Past is particularly poignant, while Double Trouble, performed at the Hogwarts Welcoming Feast, uses lyrics from Shakespeares Macbeth and sounds straight out of an early Purcell opera.

Instantly, the Juilliard-trained composers themes became radio hits, and the basis for the next six films in the series. But after number three, Williams himself dropped out of overall responsibility for the scores.
