If you thought The Order of the Phoenix was a dark ride, buckle your seatbelts. In setting the table for the series finale, The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 puts Harry, Ron and Hermione through the wringer. As they embark on a quest to hunt horcruxes, our heroes find themselves isolated from friends and family, andfor a great deal of the films second acteven pitted against each other. Apart from a fun opening sequence in which the Order assembles an army of Harry decoys thanks to a big batch of polyjuice potion, its grim and gritty, with nary a glimpse of Hogwarts and its cozy trappings. Thats not to say its badly done, by any meansits just a dramatic contrast from the more playful tone of the first four films, effectively raising the stakes, and hinting at the horrors in store should our heroes fail.

Apparently, the critics werent very fond of this films storyline which follows Harry Potter and his decision to start a tiny rebellion with his fellow students when a mean teacher decides to not teach the Hogwarts students how to defend themselves in case of an attack from Voldemort. I happen to like this movie but I can understand why its so low on this list.

‘harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire’

The fourth installment of the Harry Potter franchise ramps everything up a gear once again, this time bringing us the Triwizard Tournament, the Yule Ball, and of course, Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory. This movie sees Harry in yet another impossible predicament when he is faced with a life-threatening hurdle that he has no choice but to embrace as he is selected to battle it out for the Triwizard Cup, but this time the scenes come with brilliant cinematography and the whole film feels like a more grown-up big brother to its predecessors.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1is ranked so high on the list because it was revolutionary for film in a lot of ways, the main one being that it was one of the first franchises to split a final film into two separate parts. With Part 1 of Deathly Hallows having a running time of nearly two and a half hours and Part 2 being two hours and ten minutes long, director David Yates was able to fit everything he wanted to into the story by creating two films for the last book. This movie also generated a significant amount of Oscar buzz, including talk about a Best Picture nomination.

Harry Potter Movies Ranked Worst To Best | DOWN FOR THE COUNT

Considering its earned a very respectable rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes , it seems a mite unfair to call The Order of Phoenixthe worst Harry Potter movie. Its even more unfair when you consider how many magical moments youll find throughout this fifth instalment, which should be nowhere near the bottom of the heap.

So why is it there? Presumably, its because many fans take umbrage with the fact that it condenses the longest of J.K. Rowlings novels into just 138-minutes, making it the shortest entry in the series and losing a lot of plot threads in the process. But theres no evidence of a hatchet job on-screen, as the talewhich focuses on the Ministry of Magics escalating smear campaign against Harry and Dumbledoreis beautifully paced and shifts effortlessly from fun and fantastical to sombre and, at times, downright scary. As the tyrannical new administrator of Hogwarts, Dolores Umbridge is so completely, utterly vile, she very nearly succeeds in supplanting the Dark Lord himself as the films big bad. I say very nearly, as the climactic battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort in the vault-like chambers of the Ministry of Magic is nothing short of epic.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets 82%

In his review of The Chamber of Secrets, legendary film critic Roger Ebert writes, The first movie was the setup, and this one is the payoff. And what a payoff! The longest film in the franchise uses its 161-minute run-time to delve deeper into the Hogwarts setting, while further fleshing-out its students and staff, who already have the warm familiarity of old friends. In this decidedly darker adventure, theyre tasked with an intriguing series of mysteries to solve, each one leading to the next: Who is trying to prevent Harry from returning to Hogwarts? What terrifying force is petrifying Muggle-born students? What is the Chamber of Secrets? Its a fascinating puzzle that maintains a breathless pace throughout. Although this is our last glimpse of Richard Harris as the definitive Dumbledore, its ultimately Kenneth Branagh who steals the show as lovably flamboyant fraud, Gilderoy Lockhart.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

Runtime: 2 hrs. 13 min.

Cast: The Fantastic Beasts gang, plus Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Derek Riddell, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Fiona Glascott, Brontis Jodorowsky, and approximately 90 seconds of Jessica Williams. Oh, and Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore.

Revelio Premise: In the closing moments of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Gellert Grindelwald was imprisoned following the apparent death of Credence Barebone , a wizard whose repressed magical abilities transformed into a dark force called an Obscurus . Naturally, the sequel hinges on both those things being undone in the films earliest moments. With Grindelwald free and pursuing the troubled young man, Albus Dumbledore enlists the help of Newt Scamander , whose gentleness and disinterest in power makes him one of the only people suited to seeking Credence. Not an easy task in any circumstance, but his personal life, not to mention the chaos Grindelwald creates, seems unlikely to make things any simpler.

Artistic Pedigree: Jude Laws no joke. Neither is Zoë Kravitz. The Potter films have never had trouble attracting top-notch actors , and that trend continues here. Other than that, not much to report.

Jude Law as Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Add in some waffling about whether or not Dumbledores sexual orientation would matter to the series and youve got not a film that can be seen as both a pure yarn and a potent allegory, but a mess that has no idea what its saying.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2

Harry Potter: 20 Worst Changes From The Books To The Movies

Runtime: 2 hrs. 13 min.

Cast: Given that its a grand finale, virtually anybody whos still alive at this point in the series returns for a curtain call at some point or another. The one new, key face: Kelly Macdonald as Rowena Ravenclaw, the Gray Lady.

Revelio Premise: Hogwarts is under siege, Voldemort has the Elder Wand, and despair has overcome the entire wizarding world. Yet as long as hope remains, theres still a chance that darkness can be overcome yet. But as so many war stories go, victory on either side never comes without great sacrifice.

Artistic Pedigree: Yet again, its David Yates, who was well into his Potter tenure at this point. Some of the images he finds here, particularly during the true final battle, have become as synonymous with the look and feel of Potter as anything described in the novels. Even if, yes, Warner Bros. found another way to make all of their tentpoles as black-and-gray as possible.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2

Put A Spell On You: Sometimes its the simple spell that ultimately wins the day. When faced with Voldemorts killing blow, its a simple disarmament spell and a fateful combination of wand cores that evens the stakes. The image of the red and green spells colliding is among the most memorable in the entire onscreen series.

It’s the climax of all the films, bringing together the story in one final battle for Hogwarts, and while we didn’t want the series to end, this has got to be the most fitting finish we could have hoped for. All the loose ends of the story are neatly tied up with a bow, and the moment fans have been waiting for finally arrives when Harry finishes off Voldermort in epic style.

Fans are also treated to a glimpse into the future as we see Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermionie back on Platform 9 and three quarters waving off their own children as they board the Hogwarts Express… we challenge any die-hard Potter fan to watch the end of this film without a tear in their eye.

The 8 Best Harry Potter Movies Ranked

Trans rights are human rights. Since JK Rowling revealed her harmful ideology about trans women on Twitter, any discussion of her work requires an unequivocal statement that trans lives are valid and matter. And then, theres her 3,700-word essay doubling-down on the rhetoric in her tweets and her latest Cormoran Strike novel centering on a serial killer who dresses as a woman. So, we feel fine letting JK Rowling spin-off into whatever bigotry fueled orbit she exists in now. That said, we know were not alone in our love for the Harry Potter movies.

So, were separating the Harry Potter movies from the views of JK Rowling. These films are about so much more than one person. They brought to life an immersive, imaginative world through spectacular movie talent. But not every Harry Potter movie had the same success showcasing that talent. ‘harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince’

The sixth movie in the series sees a brilliant balance of light-hearted comedy as Ron and Harry start to discover the opposite sex with hilarious consequences, and drama as we discover more about Snape’s backstory. Tom Felton is outstanding as Malfoy as his role within the Death Eaters steps up a gear, while actor Jim Broadbent delivers a goofy Professor Slughorn to perfection.

This is also the film where Harry shares his first kiss with Ginny, and Dumbledore meets an untimely end after Snape’s shocking “betrayal”. The only thing missing is Voldermort’s back story, which stands out as some of the more important parts of J.K Rowling’s sixth book which has been oddly left out of the film.
