Statistics On Harry Potter Chapter Length

Im looking for some statistics on typical Harry Potter chapter word count.

A nicely graphed distribution would be nice, but Ill accept an answer that has something equivalent to the average, standard deviation, and quartiles.

  • Im mainly concerned with the series as whole, not each book separately. Jan 21 19 at 12:22
  • 1You may want to specify an edition as the word counts may vary, unless thats insignificant enough that you dont care about it.

To calculate this answer I used the text from the official Pottermore ePubs . I ran the htmls through a utility I found to convert them to txt, and then used the unix wc -w command to generate a list of chapter word counts.

I plugged this into excel and did a few calculations.

Note: All the below data uses the UK text. The American text tends to be a bit shorter.

  • The longest chapter is Book 5, Chapter 13 Detention with Dolores at 9,001 words.
  • Not counting the epilogue, the shortest chapter is Book 3, Chapter 20 The Dementors Kiss at 2,018 words.
  • The average chapter length is 5,547 words.
  • The standard deviation is 1,525 words.
  • 50% of the chapters are between 4,464 and 6,613 words.

Here is how the distribution looks with a bin width of 500 words.

However its worth noting that some factors have a significant effect on chapter length, such as the length of the book and the position in the book.

An Excel spreadsheet of my own devising. The number bold and in blue is the weighted average it calculated.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix Is The Longest In The Series But The Question Is Why That Book And Not Deathly Hallows Or Even Half Blood Prince

Harry Potter: 10 Differences Between The Order Of The ...

Everyone has their favorite Harry Potter book. It is just upsetting that mine happens to be the longest book in the series. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix beats out every other book with a total of 766 pages.

Now that might not seem like a lot but actually, it is. The next closest is Goblet of Fire with only 636 pages. Which honestly isnt that surprising. There is a lot to tackle in Order of the Phoenix. Not only is Voldemort back but he has made Harrys life impossible.

Harry is trying to focus on his lessons, getting dreams from Voldemort and keeping his godfatehr alive despite the fact that hes still on the run from Azkaban. It is a lot to handle and Harry is still just a teenage boy.

He even goes to court in this one because hes trying to save Dudley and Dementors come to Number 4 Privet Drive. Harry is trying his hardest to save his family and his friends and a lot of the book, it backfires on him. But in the end, he is heartbroken and Sirius Black is gone.

But honestly, I could re-read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix over and over again. Despite how long it is, it is still my favorite one and the story is interesting enough that no matter how many times we revisit it, it is still one of the best stories out there.

Whats your favorite book in the series? Do you re-read it often? Sound off in the comments below and let us know!

Harry Potter Director Confirms Initial Cut Of Debut Film Was Nearly 3 Hours Long

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first film in the massive Harry Potter movie franchise, is by no means a short movie. The fourth longest of all eight of the films, the story clocks in at a beefy 152 minutes — over two and a half hours. It’s a substantial length for a film based off of a children’s novel, but it turns out that the original, first cut of the film was even longer coming in at 172 minutes — nearly three hours.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone director Chris Columbus recently told Collider that even at nearly three hours, the film was a hit with kids and it was the parents who screened that version who thought it was just too long.

“By the time we finished the film and we screened it in Chicago — it’s good luck for us to screen our films in Chicago, so back in the day when we could go to a movie theater we would fly to Chicago and show films to an audience — the audience loved it. The audience just ate up the film,” Columbus said. “The film was two hours and fifty minutes long at that point and the kids thought it was too short and the parents thought it was too long.”

As for what happened to the additional minutes that didn’t make it to the theatrical cut, an extended version was released on Blu-ray adding an extra seven minutes to the runtime, but the rest of the deleted material is available in special features on the Blu-ray and DVD releases of the film.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire Set In 1994/95

Today, mainstream audiences are finally coming around to Robert Pattinson and appreciating him for the fantastic actor he is, acknowledging all the great work he has done post-Twilight. Pre-Twilight, though, he had a great outing in this Potter film.

Of course, Cedric Diggory is not the main focus of the fourth Potter movie but is a crucial element to it. Many fans remain disappointed at the lack of tournament we get to see, which is a fair criticism. However, this movie, set in Harry’s fourth year, is another solid entry to the franchise.

Harry Potter Actors’ LEAST Favorite Scenes To Film

In his review of The Chamber of Secrets, legendary film critic Roger Ebert writes, The first movie was the setup, and this one is the payoff. And what a payoff! The longest film in the franchise uses its 161-minute run-time to delve deeper into the Hogwarts setting, while further fleshing-out its students and staff, who already have the warm familiarity of old friends. In this decidedly darker adventure, theyre tasked with an intriguing series of mysteries to solve, each one leading to the next: Who is trying to prevent Harry from returning to Hogwarts? What terrifying force is petrifying Muggle-born students? What is the Chamber of Secrets? Its a fascinating puzzle that maintains a breathless pace throughout. Although this is our last glimpse of Richard Harris as the definitive Dumbledore, its ultimately Kenneth Branagh who steals the show as lovably flamboyant fraud, Gilderoy Lockhart.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was the movie that showed that death was possible in the one-time childrens movie series. In this film, Harry took part in a tri-wizarding tournament that saw him battle in a series of tests to determine the school with the best young wizard.

However, that was just to move the plot along as the true importance of this movie, directed by Mike Newell, was to bring Lord Voldemort back from the dead, setting up the main villain for the rest of the series. Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame was a Hogwarts student in this movie, killed in cold blood by the Death Eaters, and Voldemort declared war on all wizards by the end of this film.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban Set In 1993/94

The Prisoner Of Azkaban is not one of those lesser Harry Potter films, though, and again, follows the same school year to school year structure as the previous two films while also taking the entire series in a new direction.

With Alfonso Cuarón at the helm, this movie has a darker tone and begins a trend of Potter films becoming more mature and more assured in their craft. Save for that bizarre final shot, the movie is gorgeous, well-acted, and many will argue the very best of the movie series.
