Harry Potter Filming Locations In England

How Long Do Witches and Wizards LIVE? – Harry Potter Theory

Its hard to believe little Harry Potter is now over 20 years old . And while Scotland has a pretty unshakeable claim as the birthplace of Harry Potter, it is England where the lions share of filming took place. Below are 14 must-see Harry Potter Filming locations in England for the serious Harry Potter fan. We have a number of England vacations that include many of these spots on the itinerary or let us create a custom Harry Potter itinerary just for you.

Professor Snape Was Secretly Cool

Children aren’t exactly known for professional discretion, even children who are Harry Potter actors. Even British Harry Potter actors.

If you ever drew an unflattering picture of an authority figure when you were a kid, you’ll be able to relate to this one on the set of one of the early films, Rupert Grint recalled drawing an “unpretty” picture of Alan Rickman as Professor Snape, “and as I was drawing it, Alan Rickman was standing right behind me and I was so scared.”

Now, if this had been an actual scene shot for any other movie, the authority figure would have snatched up the picture, scowled at its “exaggerated features,” and sentenced the offender to detention. But according to the Independent, Rickman did the opposite he was actually a good sport about it. In fact he was such a good sport that he made Grint sign the drawing and then took it home as a keepsake. “I have it in my possession,” Rickman later recalled. “And I’m very fond of it.”

It Resonated With Kids And Parents Too

Critical acclaim isn’t everything, of course. What did young Potterheads make of the movie?

The late NPR correspondent Margot Adler spoke to a bunch of kids and their parents as they left a Manhattan movie theater. She found that most loved the movie, but loved the book more.

“I like the book,” one young viewer said. “It explained more.”

“I thought the book was very detailed and the movie was very good but it sort of just quickened it a little too much,” said another.

Privet Drive Was Based On Jk Rowlings Own Home

That is, it was sort of based on JK Rowlings second childhood home, which was in Winterbourne, Bristol. In her planning, Privet Drive was meant to befit Vernon Dursleys status as a company directorbig and square and smugly upper-middle class.

But when Rowling visited the set at Leavesden Studios , she felt like she was in a replica of her old childhood home. She had never described that home to a set designer or producer, but there it wasthe same down to the exact position of the famous cupboard under the stairs.

The Greenhouse In The Back

Why do you live?

When Harry moves into the smallest bedroom, he lives amongst Dudleys broken and discarded toys, some of which hed destroyed in a fit of temper, others through carelessness. Seeing this does a lot to characterize Dudley.

During that move, Harry remembers Dudley once had a tortoise. Apparently, he threw it through the roof of the greenhouse in the back, probably killing the animal. Clearly, Dudley learned his lack of respect for life by watching his parents abuse Harry for years. The greenhouse is never mentioned again, but it stands to reason that it continues to exist.

Harry Potter Cast: Where Are They Now

Brittany Brown

Brittany is a pop culture enthusiast! She loves writing about celebrities, TV shows, films, music, and more!

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have been busy since the end of the Harry Potter films. Here’s what they’ve been up to.

Popsugar

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been six years since the Harry Potter series came to an end. July 2011 saw the release of the final film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and my Potter-obsessed world has not been the same since.

Though we may never see Daniel, Rupert, and Emma reprise their roles as Harry, Ron, and Hermione again we can at least watch them perform in other movies they’ve acted in since Potter has ended. Let’s catch up with them and the rest of the cast and see what they’ve been up to since our favourite movie series has ended.

They Always Get Mistaken For Being In A Relationship

Cho is not the only person at Hogwarts to assume that Harry and Hermione are in a relationship together. From Rita Skeeter to Dumbledore himself, they are constantly getting mistaken for being in a relationship.

Due to the intensity of their friendship and all of the hardships they have been through together along with Ron, Hermione is very affectionate with her best friends while they are together.

In addition, Harry and Hermione are always together even if Ron is not around which makes it very easy to mistake the two of them for an item. Perhaps the world was just trying to tell them something and they never took the hint.

Daniel Radcliffe Had To Be Rescued From Drowning

Or, at least, the scuba divers training Daniel Radcliffe for the underwater scenes in Goblet of Fire thought he did. Radcliffe apparently got the common hand signals for scuba diving confused and the crew complied. After all, even though the underwater filming took place in a water tank, rather than a real English lake, the risk of drowning was still very real, and the crew couldn’t afford to take any chances.

Despite this little snafu, Radcliffe turned out to be a quite diligent student, and he trained for a long time to perfect not only being underwater, but learning to be Harry Potter while swimming around. Any fan of the movie will tell you that the second task of the Triwizard Tournament came off beautifully onscreen you wouldn’t even know that Radcliffe accidentally tricked everyone into thinking he was about to pull a Cedric.

The Director For The Third Film Forced The Main Actors To Write Essays About The Characters They’d Been Playing For Years

The first two Potter movies were directed by Chris Columbus, while Alfonso Cuarón took the helm for Prisoner of Azkaban. Even though Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint had played Harry, Hermione and Ron for two movies already, Cuarón had them write essays as their characters. As the story goes, Radcliffe wrote one page, Watson wrote 16, and Grint, well, didn’t turn his in. In his defence, he was preparing to take his General Certificate of Secondary Education exams and was busy. Also in his defense: really, Al?

Cuarón claimed this exercise was a way to immerse the actors in their own emotions and experiences, while digging deeper into the characters they play. He said that their essays were “really beautiful, very honest, very bare and very courageous.” Apparently, he forgot that there was no essay from Ron.

Either way, Radcliffe says that they ended up being “freakishly” like their characters. In fact, that might have been the reason Emma Watson decided to embrace her inner Hermione, and celebrate the reasons she’s like her character. While the essay she wrote is unavailable online , we can only assume that Watson shares Hermione’s book smarts, common sense and strong sense of social justice. Socks for all the house elves!

Harry Defended Hermione From Cho Chang

âIt does not do to dwell on dreams, Harry, and forget to ...

Cho Chang first caught Harrys eye in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and his feelings for her would only continue to grow over the years, culminating in the two of them going on a date during Order of the Phoenix.

Unfortunately, during Harrys one and only date with Cho, she began to show jealousy towards his relationship with Hermione and made the assumption that they were romantically involved and even went as far as to insult her.

Harry was quick to defend his friend from Chos insults, which put a strain on their relationship.

While Harry and Hermione have never been romantically involved, that has not stopped many others from assuming that they two of them are together.

How Harry Potter Survived The Killing Curse In The Deathly Hallows

The question of how Harry Potter survived Voldemort’s Killing Curse in the Forbidden Forest is complex, but it all comes back to Lily Potter.

The matter of how Harry Potter survived Lord Voldemort’s Killing Curse in the Forbidden Forest, at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, can be confusing for even hardcore fans of the books and films.

Harry had a long-standing connection to the Killing Curse. His first encounter with the Avada Kedavra incantation gave him a reputation that would carry on through his time at Hogwarts. However, it was Harry’s later brush with death in the Forbidden Forest during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that confused readers and watchers of the series – unsurprisingly, since the explanation involves a complex exchange of spells and Voldemort ultimately being the architect of his own downfall.

Even though the Harry Potter series was full of magic, conflict, and mystery, there was a lot of heart at the center of the story, so it makes sense that something like family and everlasting love would be the driving force behind Harry’s survival and Voldemort’s subsequent defeat. Here’s a breakdown of why Harry survived that night in the Forbidden Forest.

Who Manipulated The Goblet Of Fire

As Harry was just in his 4th year, it was highly improbable that he would have been selected over more advanced wizards like Cedric. Hence, Barty Crouch managed to fool the Goblet of Fire into thinking that there is a fourth school participating in the tournament and that Harry was the only applicant from said school.

Harry Owes Hermione His Life

This may be the understatement of the century, but there’s no way Harry would have survived most of the situations he encountersed throughout the series without Hermiones help.

Hermiones planning, resourcefulness, and intelligence have saved the group in each situation theyve been placed in.

As Harry says himself when confronted with how he has survived these situations, the truth is most of that was just luck. I didn’t know what I was doing half the time, I nearly always had help.” He’s undoubtedly referring to how Hermione has saved him on multiple occasions.

Whether it is her quick thinking in the face of a werewolf or her planning ahead before their exploits in The Deathly Hallows, both Harry and Ron would surely be goners without Hermione.

How Does Harry Potter Come Back To Life Without The Resurrection Stone

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2 Post Discussion LIVE

Harry survived the Killing curse because of his mothers protection. The night Voldemort killed his parents, Lilly created a magical protection power originating from love.

The protection was supposed to be lifted once harry turned seventeen, however, Voldemort accidentally prolonged its effects. Voldemort concluded that if he mixes Harrys blood into his resurrection potion, it would course through his veins and allow him to bypass Lillys protection and allow him to touch Harry without getting hurt.

What Voldemort didnt know is that this would also make sure the protection continues to live through his own blood and keep Harry alive.

This is why when Harry got hit by the Killing curse he did end up in J. K. Rowlings version of heaven he wasnt actually dead. After the conversation with professor Dumbledore, he got the chance to either stay with him or return to the real world.

Harry Potters Childhood Home: Number 4 Privet Drive

You might recognise this house as the iconic Harry Potters childhood home number 4 Privet Drive from the world-famous Harry Potter films, but its actually a real life three-bedroom house in Martins Heron, Bracknell. So much happened during Harrys time under the Dursleys roof, from when he slept in the legendary cupboard under the stairs to when Fred, George and Ron Weasley rescued him from the smallest bedroom in a flying Ford Anglia.

This exciting property was recently on the market via our Bracknell branch, and to celebrate that fact weve put together a magical floor plan, highlighting some of the young wizards most memorable moments at Number 4 Privet Drive.

When announcing that the unassuming childhood home of Harry Potter, Four Privet Drive was being put up for sale via our Bracknell Branch by Harrys less than dutiful relatives, the Dursleys, we saw a frenzy of PR activity.

Announcing that this home was up for sale was spellbinding, get it, me neither, anyway, the major television networks and journalists from New York, Berlin, Copenhagen and Dorset wanted the photos, quotes and the exclusive story. Is that Aunt Petunias real voice? What food does Uncle Vernon have in the fridge? Can we have a photo of the cupboard under the stairs? and some were related to the property itself!

An unprecedented amount of phone calls were recorded and a huge volume of emails were sent as well as an increase in enquires by carrier owl.

Albus and Scorpius return to the past again to stop Cedric completing the second task, and return to find Scorpius is now alone because in their alternate timeline, Voldemort killed Harry and won the Battle of Hogwarts .

Where Little Whinging Might Actually Be Remains A Mystery

All in all, SurreyLive has four possible options for the real-life counterpart to Little Whinging: Ashford, Dorking, Redhill, or Reigate, all of which are small towns in the Surrey area. By using clues from the book series like Uncle Vernon’s commute or the Dursleys’ trip to a nearby zoo the intrepid Harry Potter fans over at SurreyLive may have figured out exactly where Little Whinging should be.

One of the first details readers learn about Uncle Vernon is that he works at Grunnings, a fictional drill company, so SurreyLive figured out what would be a relatively reasonable commute for an impatient man like Vernon Dursley. Later, when the Dursleys go to the zoo for their son Dudley’s birthday and bring Harry along, they also drive, meaning the zoo can’t be far. However, it’s definitely not the London zoo, as Harry has never been to the big city, and doesn’t go until he travels there to shop for school supplies with Hagrid.

London is the other big issue the first book specifies that the Dursleys and Harry drive well over two hours to get to King’s Cross, and Harry also takes a train from London to wherever Little Whinging is after his day with the Dursleys. For that reason, Dorking, Redhill, and Reigate, which are close to each other and quite similar according to SurreyLive, seem to be the best options, as Ashford isn’t far enough away from London to justify such a long car ride.
