You’ll play as a student attending Hogwarts in the late 1800s, attending classes and learning magic alongside other students. “You have received a late acceptance to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and soon discover that you are no ordinary student: you possess an unusual ability to perceive and master Ancient Magic,” the studio says. “Only you can decide if you will protect this secret for the good of all, or yield to the temptation of more sinister magic.”

For context, Dumbledore was born in 1881, so this is mostly a pre-Dumbledore era we are talking about. The leaked footage, a montage of which you can check out below, also gives an idea of the general look and feel of the game in addition to the official trailer.
Bloomberg‘sreport teases that the game will “let players role-play as wizards and roam a vast, open-world re-creation of Hogwarts and its surrounding area” while also noting that that “the video was authentic, but most of the rumors that have come out since are not.”
The upcoming game does not appear to have a direct tie to the original Harry Potter book series but will flesh out the universe’s history like the Fantastic Beasts movies.

While the trailer didnt give too much information about what the game would be like, the official website does. The game will be set in the 1800s, and your journey will start as a student at Hogwarts.
Youll learn about various subjects from the world, including Potions and Magical Creatures. In your downtime, youll be able to meet new friends, which could lead to a multiplayer aspect, although we doubt it.

Hogwarts Legacy will be coming to PCs and consoles in 2021, and its a sprawling, action RPG game set in the wizarding academy featured in the Harry Potter series. It was officially unveiled today at the PlayStation Showcase event with a trailer that showed off its open world elements, its detailed environments, and some of the creatures that inhabit the area surrounding the school.
Leaks earlier this year suggested that Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software are working on a major Harry Potter game, which was meant to be revealed at E3. Reporting for Bloomberg News, Jason Schreier wrwrote that two people working on the project confirmed that the Harry Potter game was indeed in development, and that its currently scheduled for release in late 2021.
Since the mid-2000s, Avalanche has worked primarily on licensed, family-friendly games such as the Disney Infinity and Cars series. According to Bloomberg, the Harry Potter game will allow players to explore a vast, open-word re-creation of Hogwarts and its surrounding areas while roleplaying as a witch or wizard.

Hogwarts Legacy is going back in wizarding world history, but the game is coming with a fair bit of real world history that’s worth knowing about.
In recent months, J.K. Rowling has made a series of transphobic remarks that have upset many longtime Harry Potter fans, making her connection to Hogwarts Legacy a significant question. The story of Hogwarts Legacy is an Avalanche creation, and on an FAQ on its website WB Games says “J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game, however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World.”
When Kotaku asked Warner Bros. whether Rowling would receive royalties from sales of Hogwarts Legacy, a representative declined to comment.
Some fans also raised concerns over videos created by Hogwarts Legacy lead designer Troy Leavitt, who formerly ran an anti-social justice YouTube channel. Leavitt’s videos included his opinions supportive of Gamergate and references to the #MeToo movement as a “moral panic.”
“Im happy to say that, even though I disclosed my YouTube channel to WB Games, it didnt appear to be an issue for them,” Leavitt said in a video from 2018. “Not that they endorse anything that Ive said, of course, but at least they seem more concerned with making good games than with pushing some kind of a social justice agenda, so there is hope.”

Harry Potter RPG is being developed by Avalanche Software. This was revealed in a Eurogamer article back in 2018 and reaffirmed by Bloomberg‘s 2020 report. Avalanche Software was a former developer owned by Disney that was acquired by WB Games back in 2017.
The developer is best known for its work on the Disney Infinity games and the Tak series. Hogwarts Legacy could serve as the studio’s next big break.
