Where And When Can I Watch It

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will premiere Jan. 1 on HBO Max, right as the clock strikes midnight and the new year begins. To watch it, you’ll need an HBO Max subscription. Those go for $15 a month. A less expensive, ad-supported tier is now available, though it’s only $5 cheaper, and you won’t be able to stream the newest movies. My colleague Joan E. Solsman has everything you need to know about where and how to sign up for HBO Max right here.

The special will also air on TBS and Cartoon Network in spring 2022, just before the theatrical release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

An exclusive first look at the reunion special aired during the premiere of quiz competition Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses, which debuted Nov. 28 on TBS and Cartoon Network.

Is The Harry Potter Series Over

Part 1 of J.K. Rowlings epic fantasy series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Warner Bros. split the final book of J.K. Rowlings epic fantasy series into two movies, with Harry, Ron, and Hermione abandoning their final year of wizarding school to go on a quest to find and destroy all remaining Horcruxes.

Two Lead Actors Nearly Quit The Whole Thing Halfway Through

A far less enjoyable morsel of gossip is that Emma Watson and Rupert Grint nearly quit the Harry Potter franchise about halfway through the film series.

According to , Watson talks about the way sudden fame affected her in the reunion special after Grint presses her on the fact she nearly threw in the towel before filming the fifth movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when she was about 15 years old.

You were considering pulling out, Ive never really spoken to you about that, Grint said to Watson at one point in the reunion.

Watson replied that the fame hit home in a big way, which made it feel like a bit of point of no return in terms of her celebrity status as a teen.

Yeah. I think I was scared, she said.

I dont know if you ever felt like it got to a tipping point where you were like, this is kind of forever now.

Per Uproxx, Grint also considered leaving the Harry Potter franchise throughout filming, apparently regularly wondering what life would be like if he called it a day on playing Ron Weasley.

Look, its rough as guts to be thrust into such extreme fame in your formative years but Im so glad they stuck around.

Harry Potters Popularity Completely Changed The Publishing Industry And The Effect Spilled Over To Hollywood

This week marks 20 years since first Harry Potter film

Here are just two of the ways Harry Potter changed publishing, and how those changes affected the rest of pop culture:

1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.

But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.

Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.

Related

The Outsiders reinvented young adult fiction. Harry Potter made it inescapable.

2) Harry Potter made childrens literature an unstoppable force. Before Harry Potter, childrens literature was often considered an afterthought. Sales were falling. Children, analysts would say wistfully, just werent reading anymore.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone Set In 1991/92

Onto the series that everybody fell in love with years ago, the first film adaptation of the famous book series came in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, retitled Sorcerer’s Stone for American and Indian audiences.

Taking place in Britain in the very early 1990s, the film follows the iconic characters in their first year at Hogwarts, establishing friends, foes, settings, and overall building of the Wizarding World in a brilliant way. A great start to the series, and a good adaptation.

The Tales Of Beedle The Bard

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a collection of five fairy wizarding tales, told by, well, Beedle the Bard! Professor Dumbledore bequeathed these age-old tales to Hermione Granger, and they turned out to be instrumental in helping Harry Potter crack the clues given to him in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now it’s your chance to read them for yourself. Though the stories in this book all have a magical twist, the themes at their cores still resonate with what we associate with fairy tales: friendship, the everlasting strength of love, and the magic that each one of us possesses.

Lily Potter Was Played By Geraldine Somerville

Actress Geraldine Somerville played Lily Evans Potter, Harry’s mother.

Before joining the “Harry Potter” franchise in “Sorcerer’s Stone,” Somerville starred as Juliet in the 1994 TV movie adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” and appeared alongside Coltrane on “Cracker” from 1993 to 1995.

In between filming the series, Somerville joined Smith and Gambon in “Gosford Park” .

Since Harry Potter Ended Oldman Has Become An Oscar

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts | First Look Teaser | HBO Max

After “Harry Potter” wrapped, Oldman was recognized by the Academy for his work in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” , in which he played intelligence officer George Smiley.

That same year, he also reprised his role as Commissioner Gordon in “The Dark Knight Rises” .

The actor went on to star in films like “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” . In 2017, Oldman also transformed into Winston Churchill for “Darkest Hour” and won the Oscar for best actor.

Recently, Oldman worked on “The Laundromat” , “The Courier” , “A Place Among the Dead” , “Mank” , “Crisis” , “The Woman in the Window” , and “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” .

He’s set to appear in the new Apple TV+ spy series “Slow Horses.”

The Harry Potter Films Take Place In The 2000’s

The films, on the other hand, do not take place in the 1990s. While it is not specified in the dialogue of the first film, it can be inferred from the modern haircuts, technology, and a primary school certificate for Dudley Dursley that it takes place in the year 2001.

The books and films take place from 1991-1998 and between 2001-2008, respectively, though it’s easy to get confused, considering the final book was released in 2007 and the final film in 2011.

But there are plenty of debates online between fans who consider the films to have taken place in the same timeline as the books. One reddit user points out that in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 graveyard scene, “Harry’s parents’ headstone still says they died in 1981” and another said that the movies also take place in ’90s, but it was “laziness” on the part of the filmmakers to include aspects of modern day.

It would likely be easier for everyone if we had access to a time-turner.

    Rising tensions

When Harry picked Albus up from King’s Cross, who had returned from a year at Hogwarts, he was surprised to find Albus distant and colder. This distance was in direct response to the pressure Albus felt regarding Harry’s legacy and the expectations that others put on him because of it. Albus and Scorpius Malfoy became fast friends during the year, as they were kindred spirits they both carry a burden stemming from their family identity and feel that they are misfits and losers in comparison with the other students at Hogwarts. Harry did not like this and he questioned why Albus was content to have only the one friend. Their relationship would stay strained for the next couple of years to come.

In September 2019, Harry took Albus to King’s Cross yet again where he gave Albus the permission slip he needed to visit Hogsmeade. Albus destroyed the slip by burning it, stating that he had no wish to go to Hogsmeade and left his father behind. This in turn caused Harry to become angry with him. Their father-son relationship continues to deteriorate, going from bad to worse.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1

The introduction to the climax of the entire story, here is what the past six movies were all building up to, and trust us, its well worth the wait. Harry, Hermione and Ron have made leaps and bounds since their first adventure in the Philosophers Stone.

The movie sees their growth as they set out on their own, leaving loved ones and Hogwarts behind. Paired with some of the most sombre and striking moments in the entire franchise, the film is a great stepping stone to the finale. All the struggles we see the trio go through make you root for them more than ever as they gear up for their final showdown against Lord Voldemort.
