A Note On Controversy

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets game PC Secret Level

Like so many of the best things in this world, there is controversy surrounding a few aspects of the Harry Potter series. When the books were first released, the biggest controversy revolved around the elements of fantasy and witchcraft in Harry Potter. Of course, the witchcraft is no secret- Harry Potter is a wizard, after all. And in the early books, the majority of the magic is innocent and fairly vague.

The later books in the series admittedly are a bit darker and tend to handle more discussion of dark arts, especially when talking about Voldemorts acts, and the acts of his followers. There is discussion of murder as well. So, for several reasons, Harry Potter is listed as a banned book by many schools and organizations.

But this definitely doesnt mean that it is inappropriate for all children, and ultimately the decision to allow your children to read the books lies with you and your comfort level surrounding topics of magic, witchcraft, and later, concepts of good vs. evil and morality.

More recent controversy surrounding the series has revolved less around the content and characters of the books, but rather on the personal views and biases of series author J.K. Rowling.

In response to a recent series of social media posts by the author, she has been labeled a TERF due to mocking comments she made regarding trans-positive language and transgender rights.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a fantasy novel written by British author J. K. Rowling and the second novel in the Harry Potter series. The plot follows Harry‘s second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, during which a series of messages on the walls of the school’s corridors warn that the “Chamber of Secrets” has been opened and that the “heir of Slytherin” would kill all pupils who do not come from all-magical families. These threats are found after attacks that leave residents of the school petrified. Throughout the year, Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione investigate the attacks.

Several commentators have noted that personal identity is a strong theme in the book and that it addresses issues of racism through the treatment of non-human, non-magical, and non-living people. Some commentators regard the story’s diary that writes back as a warning against uncritical acceptance of information from sources whose motives and reliability cannot be checked. Institutional authority is portrayed as self-serving and incompetent.

Rereading Harry Potter In My Thirties

Imagine having a crappy summer and walking into your room one day to find a House Elf there. It tries to convince you NOT to go back to the only place where you felt happy because youd be in danger. Would you listen to it or not?

And then one night, your relatives get fed up with you, and they lock you in your room. Later, some of your friends show up in a flying car and get you out of the house.

If it were me, Id still want to go back to the place that made me happy, regardless of the danger. Maybe because its me, the potential risk would make me more excited to go back to the place that made me so happy. That logic is how we ended up with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Chamber Of Secrets Is The Most Important Book In The Harry Potter Series

No matter how you feel about the second book in the series, you cant ignore one glaring fact about it. The events in the later books couldnt possibly happen without the events in the Chamber of Secrets.

Without Chamber of Secrets, Dumbledore wouldnt have figured out Voldemorts plan to stay immortal. Ron and Hermione wouldnt have figured out how to destroy Horcruxes without Gryffindors sword. Ginny wouldnt have been able to help Harry figure out whats going on in his head without Chamber of Secrets.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone set up this magical world for Harry and his friends to explore. The Chamber of Secrets is the book that started the real story of Harry Potter.

He’s also thrown when Riddle reveals himself to be Lord Voldemort from a different era, before the Dark Lord turned bald, lost his nose and was known around the world as He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

During their showdown, the Dark Lord mocks Harry by saying his mother, Lily, bought him 12 years of borrowed time. But, in this instance, Voldemort has got his numbers mixed up. Harry was one year old when he survived the attack at Godric’s Hollow, and 12 at the moment of their conversation, meaning Riddle should have said his mother bought the youngster 11 years of borrowed time instead.

About The Harry Potter Series

Basically the seven Harry Potter books are fantasy novels written by a British author, J K Rowling.

The books are about the adventures of a young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. The three are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The three friends are eleven when the first book begins and nearly eighteen at the end of the final book in the series.

The main story arc involves Harry’s quest to overcome the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort, who seeks to conquer the wizarding world, subjugate non-magical people and destroy all those who stand in the way of his becoming immortal. The books tackle many themes, among them prejudice, the power of love, corruption, death, friendship, loyalty and good vs evil. They also involve elements of mystery, romance and adventure, woven together in a series of quite complex subplots.

The first book in the Harry Potter series was released on June 1997. It was followed by six further books, all of which have been hugely popular around the world, selling over 450 million copies.

Harry Potter Reading Level Guide By Age And Grade

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets PC ‘Level 3 Intro’ Custom Map Walkthrough (4K)

Below, I introduce all seven Harry Potter books in the series and give each one an age and grade recommendation. Ive taken into account two factors reading ability and content suitability.

Generally, the themes within these stories become more mature as the series develops. This allows children to work their way through each book as they mature and grow too.

Of course, all children are different. As a parent or teacher, youll know better than anyone what your child or student is ready for. These age recommendations are intended only as a guide to help you decide where to get started.

Without further ado, here is the Harry Potter reading level guide.

Harry Potter Books Age Range

The appearance of a serial killer is one of the more mature subjects. Unlike past murders in the series, this serial murderer has no ties to several of his victims.

He murders for no reason and on a massive scale. Rowling addresses these ideas in an easy-to-understand manner, and most younger readers are likely to skip over their significance without much consideration.

The reading level expected for books 4 and 5 increases noticeably. The story gets more intertwined and complicated, and it is generally too difficult for children under the age of ten. These books are often longer and demand more concentration than many younger readers can muster.

Book 6 maintains most of the same reading and comprehension standards as the previous two volumes.

There are plot levels and turns to navigate that most children with strong listening abilities can tackle on their own without too much difficulty.

We would recommend the sixth book for 11-year-olds rather than 10-year-olds if they wished to give it a try due to the complex topics that necessitate a degree of sophistication that many 10-year-olds lack.

The trend of death returns, but with much greater frequency. Characters vital to the plot are killed, and there are some particularly horrific scenes of brutality that overshadow anything seen in the previous novels.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Introduction

Author J.K. Rowling was in the middle of writing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when the first Harry Potter novel came out in Britain in 1997. Following the runaway success of the first Harry Potter book, US publishers launched a bidding war involving six-figure dollar amounts for the rights to bring the Harry Potter novels stateside . Once Harry appeared on the US market in 1998, Rowling became an international celebrity. Rowling comments:

The stakes seemed to have gone up a lot, and I attracted a lot of publicity in Britain for which I was utterly unprepared. Never in my wildest imaginings had I pictured my face in the papers particularly captioned, as they almost all were, with the words “penniless single mother.” It is hard to be defined by the most difficult part of your life.

So, picture for yourself a woman working in relative peace on a new book project. Then, suddenly, your world changes entirely: you’re hugely famous , not only in your own country but around the world. Imagine the pressure that Rowling must have felt to make Chamber of Secrets as or more awesome than the first book. Rowling recalls:

At one third of the way into writing , Stone had this huge success which was totally unexpected. I was happy about that, but it also frightened me because I thought I cannot reproduce this, it is a flash in the pan, I was temporarily blocked in writing Chamber of Secrets.

  • Connection To Harry Potter And The Half

    Cosmo Music

Chamber of Secrets has many links with the sixth book of the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In fact, Half-Blood Prince was the working title of Chamber of Secrets and Rowling says she originally intended to present some “crucial pieces of information” in the second book, but ultimately felt “this information’s proper home was book six”. Some objects that play significant roles in Half-Blood Prince first appear in Chamber of Secrets: the Hand of Glory and the opal necklace that are on sale in Borgin and Burkes a Vanishing Cabinet in Hogwarts that is damaged by Peeves the Poltergeist and Tom Riddle’s diary, which is later shown to be a Horcrux. Additionally, these two novels are the ones with the most focus on Harry’s relationship with Ginny Weasley.

The film version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was released in 2002.Chris Columbus directed the film, and the screenplay was written by Steve Kloves. It became the third film to exceed $600 million in international box office sales, preceded by Titanic, released in 1997, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, released in 2001. The film was nominated for a Saturn Award for the Best Fantasy Film, According to Metacritic, the film version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets received “generally favourable reviews” with an average score of 63%, and another aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, gave it a score of 82%.

    The Harry Potter Films

The Harry Potter books have been made into eight films which were released between 2001 and 2011.

The films star English actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the leading roles of Harry Potter and his best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

The films are terrific for adults and for children although, as with the books, they get progressively darker and more scary with more adult themes as you progress through the series. With that in mind, it can be a good idea to watch them yourself before you introduce your younger children to them.

Are The Harry Potter Illustrated Books The Same As The Original

They are the same when it comes to content on the inside! The beloved Harry Potter series brilliantly illustrated editions are full novels.

These volumes have no abridgments and are written in full color with customizable text margins. The pages are shiny, and the hardbound covers are well-built.

When were talking about the inconsistencies between the Harry Potter kids and adult versions, we can also note the differences between the U.K. editions and the American version.

The distinction is not in the plot, but in the vocabulary used. As we all know, British and American English spellings vary.

Most of the differences between the American and British versions is the use of the term sorcerer and philosopher.

There are both complete and unabridged copies, with some exceptions, such as the American edition including some translations into American idiom rather than expecting children to glance at a footnote describing the terms that are used only in Britain.

The Harry Potter series is intended for young readers. However, the way they were first published as soon as they were finished saw them getting darker and more serious as the original Harry Potter generation grew older. Books were published a couple of years apart, and the readers aged with the books.
