Loyalty and bravery were considered immensely positive character traits through the stories. Harrys loyalty to his friends, and bravery in the face of danger, was something that defined him both as a Gryffindor and also as the hero of the books.
Are All Houses Equal
Technically speaking, no theyre not. Sure, theyre all Hogwarts Houses, they have their own tables in the Great Hall, and they all have a fighting chance at winning the House Cup every year, but technically speaking, theyre not built the same way.
You know that saying, Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid? This is exactly what happens when you try to judge the four Hogwarts Houses off the same traits.
For example, if you were to judge students based on who would be most likely survive when they come across a Sphinx, youd know that Ravenclaws were likely to win. On the other hand, if four people from four houses were tasked with the best way on how to deal with a dragon, Gryffindors would win.
They are equal in the sense that they are houses, but they are unequal in the sense that their traits that make up their strengths cannot compete with each other. However, just because they are unequal houses does not mean there is one house that stands over the other. So, when I say that Hufflepuff is the best house, its not in the sense that it trumps over other houses. Rather, its the house that stands out rather than over others because of what it has to offer.

In fact, if you think about what the Sorting Hat said, it can mean that a person has high ambition, intelligence, and courage, but they can easily set that aside in favor of being loyal and good to the people around them.
Having high ambition means rising in the ranks. But if they see that they need to step on other people just to fuel their ambition, they will not do that and find another way to reach their goals. A Hufflepuff can be just as smart as a Ravenclaw, but they will use their intelligence to help others rather than for the sake of showing off how smart they are. And they can be brave in the face of danger, but they will fight because it is the right thing to do, especially when they know others need them to.
So, when you think about it, a lot of Hufflepuffs could have done very well in other Houses. However, those lucky enough to make it in Hufflepuff are those who choose loyalty and goodness above all. So, its really ironic how a house that is always seen as the underdog to the rest of the three houses is actually the one that stands out among the others.

When youre a kid you are drawn, moth-like, to only the coolest things. Thats all you want. This is the particular lot of youth: to ignore anything peripheral and zero in on whatever is number one. Its why everyone wanted to be Ginger Spice and not, you know, Sporty. Its why Gryffindor, the most famous house in all of Hogwarts, was so popular. You can forget about Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff completely.
It takes the 20/20 vision of hindsight to understand how much of a mistake that is. Its only now, years later, that I realise that the best Hogwarts house is Hufflepuff, actually.
