Number 7 in the Harry Potter Books Ranked is Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, which started it all. By far, book one in the series is the most different of all the books. From J.K Rowlings prose to the characters and the world-building, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is the most child-friendly book in the series. That makes sense, considering that the main protagonists are eleven-year-olds in this book. Although the book is the shortest in the series, it is also the hardest to get through during multiple re-reads.

The problem with Philosophers Stone compared to the other books in the series is that it verges too much in the middle-grade genre and is just too simple. As a stand-alone, this book is excellent in establishing the wizarding world, which is the entire point of the novel. Its not meant to be complicated, its meant to be simple enough that a nine-year-old could understand it and one day hope to receive their Letter of Acceptance to Hogwarts on their eleventh birthday.

I would compare this book to Charlieand the Chocolate Factory or James and the Giant Peach in that Philosophers Stone works as a great book to read to your kids at bedtime. Its an incredibly creative book, but it cannot really generate in-depth discussion or analysis.

Book : Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince

Prince sets an almost impossibly high bar for the ending of the series, and introduces a lot of vital information about the Wizarding World we just didnt know before. This book is actually incredibly light in tone, especially when compared to the previous book. It has incredibly funny moments, and shows a deeper side to the anti hero of Harry Potter Severus Snape.

Dumbledores death at the end of the sixth is a tragic moment, but it was pretty necessary in order for Harry to come into his own and defeat Voldemort in the seventh, so well forgive Rowling for tugging at our heartstrings.

The only task harder than that of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is introducing us to the magical world itself, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone does that with gusto. Harry leaps into the unknown at the first opportunity, leaving every horror hes ever experienced under the Dursleys roof and stepping into a world of magic he didnt know existed. And he did so alongside the biggest man hed ever laid eyes on.

Opening not only Harrys eyes, but all of ours to the magic surrounding us was a gargantuan task to undertake, but Sorcerers Stone does it, and does it pretty freaking well. We see Platform 9 & 3/4, the Hogwarts Express, Diagon Alley, and Hogwarts all for the first time, and each and every new place is better than the last. We meet new characters, eat new treats, experience new commonplace things , and start off an adventure that will change not only Harrys world, but our world, too.

Book : Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Something of a controversial choice for this high on the list I would argue, however, that the Order of the Phoenix deserves the bronze medal for best Harry Potter book. It is by far the darkest book, with Harry dealing with some very not child-book aimed demons.

Although it is the longest book in terms of pages, its isnt brimming with action, instead focusing more of its time on developing the characters into grown, individually minded young people.

It also has one of the most epic moments out of all the books that being the duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore. Its really the only time we ever see a high level, top tier Wizard duel in the entire series, so thats pretty cool. We couldve probably done without Harrys highly awkward relationship with Cho, but who hasnt had a cringeworthy relationship or two?

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

The absolute best of the best, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is not only the pivotal story in the saga for the Harry/Voldemort dynamic, but it represents a turning point for just about every character. This is the book where Harry meets those who want Voldemort to return to his evil ways and the entire world is thrown off its axis. Prior to Goblet of Fire Harry mostly knew that Voldemort was evil, killed his parents, and was trying to return to the land of the living. At most, he was aware that Professor Quirrell and maybe a few others wanted Voldemort to return, but not that there was a powerful and motivated group of people who not only want Voldemort to return to power, but that have been doing their part in secret to keep his cause alive. Throughout the pages of Goblet of Fire, Harry also has to confront the horrors of growing up. Not only does he have to compete against the other Triwizard champions who are all at least 3 years of magical education ahead of him, but he asks Cho Chang to the Yule Ball, he has a pretty epic fight with his very best friend, and grieves a new, but no less true, friend. This book represents a substantial pivot from Harry and his friends wreaking havoc in the castle as they try to right wrongs and protect loved ones, to seeing what challenges the magical world outside of Hogwarts has in store for Harry, and resultingly Ron and Hermione as well.
