Tips For Matching Reading Level Interest And Maturity
A common dilemma occurs when the readability level of a book is not a good match for your childs interest or maturity level. This is often the case when a child reads significantly ABOVE or BELOW their current grade level. As I discussed in my last post, “Your Child’s Reading Level Explained,” matching reading materials to your child’s reading level is crucial to the learning process and their development as readers.
BELOW level books can have often have immature or simplistic content, causing the reader to lose interest. For example, a 9 year boy old who reads on first grade level may not want to read Clifford the Big Red Dog, even though it’s wonderful book and a good match for his reading abilities. He may become discouraged from reading if he is not given choices that suit his preferences and maturity level.
On the other hand, ABOVE level text may have overly mature content. Many high level readers in elementary school are eager to delve into popular series such as Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, or Twilight. Just because a child can handle the text complexity, does not necessarily mean you want them to be exposed to mature, violent, or downright scary content. Although there are many redeeming qualities to the literature, there are reasons why some of the movies have been rated PG-13. Often books can be even more vivid than movies in their descriptions of violent or sexual scenes.

The Harry Potter Films
The Harry Potter books have been made into eight films which were released between 2001 and 2011.
The films star English actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the leading roles of Harry Potter and his best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
The films are terrific for adults and for children although, as with the books, they get progressively darker and more scary with more adult themes as you progress through the series. With that in mind, it can be a good idea to watch them yourself before you introduce your younger children to them.

The Harry Potter Series: Ages And Stages
The first three Harry Potter books are great to read aloud to kids aged from about six or seven up. Certainly most children – both boys and girls – will love them from the age of eight.
If your eight-year-old is a fairly capable reader, he or she will probably be able to read the first three books independently. Remember though, that it can be fun to read aloud to older children and the Harry Potter books are great for this purpose because most adults enjoy the stories too.
The last four books are long and quite complex. Certainly many ten-year-olds will be quite capable of reading them but again, I think they’re great for reading aloud to kids aged up to about eleven.
Most teens will enjoy reading the books and in fact the seventh and final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is probably not suitable for readers under about thirteen. Harry Potter’s school year keeps getting disrupted by the latest thing Voldemort is planning but what would a normal Hogwarts curriculum look like?
Its safe to say there are a lot of questions about the Hogwarts curriculum. Unlike the Muggle world, young witches and wizards dont seem to bother with math or reading classes . Instead, their curriculum consists of fantastical subjects called things like “Care of Magical Creatures” and “Transfiguration.” The students dont seem to really spend time on anything mundane, which makes sense. Magic does seem pretty complicated in itself. Of course, in the books, the trio doesnt seem to actually spend that much time in classes. Their school year keeps getting disrupted by the latest terrible thing Voldemort is planning, and they dont even bother with their seventh year.

At the end of The Half-Blood Prince, Harry insists that he wont return to Hogwarts, deciding that destroying the Horcruxes is more important. Likewise, Ron and Hermione decide that theyre in it until the end with Harry, so audiences dont even get a look at what their seventh year would have been like. With the Death Eaters having essentially taken over the school at that point, it probably wouldnt have been a great experience anyway. So while Harry, Ron, and Hermione were off being heroes and saving the day, what were the rest of the students actually learning?

Most children are ready for the first three books in the Harry Potter series by the time they reach the 3rd grade. After around eight years old, children will generally have a good enough reading level to try out these books independently.
