The Books Describe A Bushy
To get a good working picture of the canonical Hermione Granger, it’s best to go straight to the source. We get a few key descriptive passages directly from J.K. Rowling herself. In the first Harry Potter novel, 1997’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , Hermione makes her entrance on the Hogwarts Express, where she introduces herself to future besties Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Rowling describes the young Miss Granger as possessing “lots of bushy brown hair, and rather large front teeth.” Both the hair and the teeth become Hermione’s most commonly referenced features throughout the series.
Interestingly, the director of the first two films, Chris Columbus, made the most valiant effort to stay true to Rowling’s description. Although he and his crew didn’t go as far as to digitally enhance Emma Watson’s teeth, they did obviously frizz out her hair to match the canonical description. The bushy look persisted until Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron imposed a different vision on the series. Cuaron clearly had a plan to make the students at Hogwarts seem more like normal teens by favoring fashionable street clothes over school robes and blessing them with more flattering hair styles. The result as with the third film as a whole was visually striking, if a bit farther afield of the original story.
Despite Being The Top Of Her Class Hermione Wasn’t Good At Everything
Hermione is known for being a brilliant student who excels in almost everything she tries. She was even called an “insufferable know-it-all” by Professor Snape.
But there are a few things Hermione wasn’t good at.
In “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” we learn that Hermione isn’t particularly skilled at Wizard Chess. In “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” we also see that Divination isn’t her strongest subject. And throughout the series, the young witch never really got the hang of flying on a broomstick.
She Isnt Open To Other Peoples Ideas
In one movie, she completely dismisses Lunas ideas of magical creatures and she even goes as far as calling them illogical. She then takes it a step further by mercilessly mocking Luna and calling her a loony. Hermione will dismiss anything in a heartbeat if she doesnt know or cant comprehend it.

Crookshanks on the Hogwarts Express
Hermione took Crookshanks to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with her and he was present on the train when Dementors boarded in search of Sirius Black. Perhaps because he was half-Kneazle, the newly-adopted cat demonstrated the ability to detect frauds masquerading as animals, most notable of which being Animagi. Before the start of the 1993-1994 school year, Crookshanks attacked Peter Pettigrew in his Animagus form of Scabbers, Ron’s beloved pet rat when Ron took him in as he was looking unwell after the Weasley family‘s trip to Egypt.Afterwards, Crookshanks sought Scabbers out even attacking him in Ron’s presence and causing the rat to seek hiding places.

Little Miss Know It All
Miss Granger might be well versed in a lot of topics. However, sometimes she does come off as an insufferable know it all who always thinks she is right and has a habit of shoving her opinions down people’s throats. She often makes decisions that affect those around her without consulting them first.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban
Hermione buys a cat named Crookshanks, who takes to chasing Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers. Before the start of term, Professor McGonagall secretly gives Hermione a Time-Turner, a device which enables her to go back in time and handle her heavy class schedule, though this is not revealed until the penultimate chapter. Much tension comes into play between Hermione and her two best friends Harry is furious with her because she told McGonagall that he had received a Firebolt, which was confiscated to be inspected for traces of dark magic. Ron is angry because he feels Crookshanks is responsible for Scabbers’ disappearance, while Hermione fiercely maintains that Crookshanks is innocent.
While filling in for Remus Lupin in one Defence Against the Dark Arts class, Snape labels Hermione “an insufferable know-it-all” and penalises Gryffindor after she speaks out of turn in her attempt to describe a werewolf when no one else does. She correctly deduces Lupin’s secret after completing Snape’s homework assignment from the class. Crookshanks proves vital in exposing Scabbers as Peter Pettigrew, an erstwhile friend of James and Lily Potter, who revealed their whereabouts to Lord Voldemort the night of their murders, and was able to wrongly implicate Sirius Black in the Potters’ deaths. The Time-Turner enables Hermione and Harry to rescue Sirius and the hippogriff Buckbeak.
She Had No Friends During Her Muggle Life
You must have noticed that Hermione acted like a total loser in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone before she became friends with Ron and Harry, and this was because she really was a complete loser.
She had absolutely zero friends in the muggle world before heading off to Hogwarts. In fact, Harry and Ron were her first friends ever. Hermiones neurotic personality when she was a kid ensured no one wanted to be friends with her and she had a very lonely childhood indeed. Good thing Harry and Ron, and even Hagrid, came along.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
Hermione is horrified by the cruelty that house-elves suffer, and establishes S.P.E.W., the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, as an effort to gain basic rights for them. She is Bulgarian Quidditch prodigy Viktor Krum‘s date at the Yule Ball of the Triwizard Tournament. The proper pronunciation of her name is interjected into the plot when she teaches it to Krum the best he can do is “Herm-own-ninny,” but she has no problem with it. She later gets into a heated argument with Ron after he accuses her of “fraternising with the enemy” about her friendship with Krum. In the book, Hermione’s feelings toward Ron are hinted at when she says that Ron can’t see her “like a girl,” but Krum could. She supports Harry through the Triwizard Tournament, helping him prepare for each task. At the end of the second task, Krum asks her to come to see him over the summer in Bulgaria, but she politely declines. Near the end of the term, she stops fraudulent tabloid reporter and unregistered Animagus, Rita Skeeter, who had published defamatory material about Hermione, Harry, and Hagrid during the Triwizard Tournament, by holding her Animagus form captive in a jar.

She Was Made Curvier In The Imax Poster
The IMAX poster for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix drew criticism for how it depicted Emma Watson. Compared to the other movie posters, Watson’s bust had been enlarged – despite the fact that Hermione is supposed to be fifteen years old during the events of the movie. Hermione’s waist was also made slimmer and her hair was lightened to make it seem blonde.
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
Hermione develops a liking for Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockhart as he had written all the books required for the subject of Defence Against The Dark Arts in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. During a morning confrontation between the Gryffindor and Slytherin Quidditch teams, a brawl nearly ensues after Draco Malfoy calls her a “Mudblood“, an insulting epithet for Muggle-born wizards when she defends the Gryffindor Quidditch team. She concocts the Polyjuice Potion needed for the trio to disguise themselves as Draco’s housemates to collect information about the Heir of Slytherin who has reopened the Chamber of Secrets. However, she is unable to join Harry and Ron in the investigation after the hair plucked from the robes of Slytherin student Millicent Bulstrode was that of her cat, whose appearance she takes on in her human form it takes several weeks for the effects to completely wear off. Hermione is Petrified by the basilisk after successfully identifying the creature through library research. Though she lies incapacitated in the hospital wing, the information she has found and left behind is crucial to Harry and Ron in their successful mission to solve the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets. Hermione is revived after Harry kills the basilisk, but she is distraught to learn that all end-of-year exams have been cancelled as a school treat.

She Was Happy About Breaking Ron And Lavender Up
When Lavenders interest in Ron was a mere flirtation, Hermione didnt seem happy at all. And when Ron and Lavender became an item, Hermione was completely distraught about it. Once Hermione and Ron made up from their squabble, they started spending time together again and it was because of this Lavender dumped Ron.
Rather than feeling guilty, Hermione was seen with a visible smile on her face by Harry once Ron was single again. She was inwardly happy at what had happened because of her involvement.
Hermione Does Some Growing Up In Books 4 And 5
In book 4, The Goblet of Fire, Hermione’s big front teeth become an explicit point of shame. Draco Malfoy uses the insecurity to rag on Hermione upon learning that she has secured a date to the Yule Ball. “You’re not telling me someone’s asked that to the ball?” he asks rhetorically. “Not the long-molared Mudblood?” Always a charmer, that Malfoy.
Ahead of the ball, Hermione tricks the school nurse, Madame Pomfrey, into shrinking her teeth to a more proportional size. She also uses a wizarding product called “Sleakeazy’s Hair Potion” to tame her rebellious locks. With her whole look revamped to impress her quidditch-star date Viktor Krum, Goblet Hermione probably looks as close to Watson’s on-screen portrayal as at any previous point in the books.
The makeover doesn’t last, however. Rowling makes a point of noting that Hermione abandons the hair product after the ball. “Hermione’s hair was bushy again she confessed to Harry that she had used liberal amounts of Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion on it for the ball, ‘but it’s way too much bother to do every day,’ she said.”

She Gets Crazy Jealous
Fleur Delacour never did anything to Hermione she never even spoke to her, but Hermione vehemently hated Fleur for no reason. That is, unless you see how obviously she was jealous that Ron was into Fleur and ignored Hermione. Discounting Fleur, Hermione still got jealous when Ron was interested in Lavender and she was left in the cold.
We didnt see how Hermione was like in a relationship, but you can bet she wasnt the cool girlfriend guys hope they can find. Hermione seems to be very possessive of who shes interested in.
Harry Potter: 25 Things Wrong With Hermione Granger We All Choose To Ignore
Harry Potter may be the main character, but Hermione tends to get most of the focus from fans. Except where it counts.
In the Harry Potter series, we had the Golden Trio. These three characters made Harry Potter what it was and without them there would be no series. While Harry was the main protagonist, he didnt have all the attributes that would have enabled him to take down Voldemort. His friends also got separate personalities and abilities that made them stand out in their own ways. Rivaling Harry in the best character polls is Hermione Granger. A sizable portion of the fandom consider Hermione to be the best character in the series due to her multitude of capabilities as well as her mature personality.
Hermiones star was made brighter after Emma Watson portrayed her in the Harry Potter film series as she was quite a looker and was very close in personality to Hermione Granger. While Harry and Ron have some people who arent fans of them, Hermione never has anyone dislike her. Shes seen as the most complete of the trio due to her hardly ever showing tendencies that would make her unlikable. All in all, if youre a fan of Hermione, youre nothing special because of all the Harry Potter fandom feels the same way about her.

Thinking Expulsion Is Worse Than The End Of One’s Mortal Coil
When she was still in her neurotic phase, Hermione placed education at the top of her priorities list. Whenever she was faced with the prospect of expulsion, Hermione would retract her intention to break rules, even for good although this was something she eventually started overlooking.
In Philosophers Stone, though, Hermione claimed losing her life wasnt as bad as getting expelled. Ron caught this and stated out loud that Hermione really needed to sort out her priorities. Considering she returned for her seventh year, education was still top priority for her.
Is Book Hermione Pretty
As others have pointed out, Hermione was written to be average-looking, with her most identifyable features being her bushy hair and large front teeth. In Goblet of Fire, with some hair styling and magical dental work, she becomes unrecognisably beautiful. But her looks arent important its her character.

She Eventually Became Minister For Magic
In 2007, Rowling told “Today” that Hermione went on to a “pretty high up” position in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic.
Previously, in “Deathly Hallows,” Hermione expressed she didn’t want to pursue a career in this field. When asked by Minister Rufus Scrimgeour if she was interested in Magical Law, she said she wasn’t because “I’m hoping to do some good in the world.”
According to the “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” play, which joined the series’ canon in 2016, Hermione eventually went on to succeed Kingsley Shacklebolt as Minister for Magic.
The Shirt & Sweater Combo
Hermione often appeared to be wise beyond her years and occasionally, she would dress accordingly. In her midâteens she is seen here wearing a white shirt underneath a thin, striped sweater. I love this look for me it summons feelings of university, study groups, and libraries while balancing neatly on the fine line between smart and casual. It’s a great look for when you’re unsure as to what an occasion requires you to wear or if you want to appear a tad more formal and preppy than is needed for everyday life.
