I can only think of one more thing, and it has to do with the map of spell locations. As I said above, every interactive wand comes with a map of all magical spots. It comes folded up accordion style and is rather large.What most people don’t know is that you can ask for a smaller version of the map. The smaller version is smaller and flat. Meaning, it isn’t folded in any way. It makes for a gorgeous keepsake. Of course, the challenge is to get the map home without any damage. You might want to bring a manilla folder with you to the WWoHP if you want a small map so you have something that will protect it.Update – The last time I was at Universal Studios I found out that they are no longer have the small maps. You can still ask because it’s possible they might have one or two hidden away in a drawer somewhere, but it looks like these have gone the way of cauldrons made of cheese.

In The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you can find two Ollivanders stores, one in each park. Ollivanders carries 13 original wand designs as well as character wands. The original designs are made out of birch, rowan, ash, alder, willow, hawthorn, oak, holly, hazel, vine, ivy, reed or elder woods. The range of character wands is quite extensive. You can find the wands of major characters, such as Harry Potter, Professor Dumbledore and Voldemort, as well as many supporting characters, including Mad-Eye Moody and Nymphadora Tonks.

The character wands will be labeled by the characters name, and the original Ollivanders designs have labels with an intricate “O.” If youre looking specifically for an interactive wand, look for the labels in gold. As far as pricing goes, make sure to set aside $55 for an interactive wand or $49 for a non-interactive wand.

If you plan on buying an interactive wand, I highly recommend going to the Ollivanders Wand Shop where you can be a part of the wand show. Its a very intimate and relaxing experience . Here you are brought back in very small groups, led down a long hall into an old room with shelves upon shelves of wands. One person from the group gets chosen at random to have a wand magically selected for them.

The Little Fairytale Traveler was in luck and was chosen for this magical experience! A mother couldnt be more proud! I must say, watching my 5-year-old watch in wonder as a wand was magically selected just for him was beyond enchanting. He was so excited and so charmed! It was a very memorable experience for both he and I.

The Little was pretty stoked to get his interactive wand. The whole experience was so magical!

These next generation wand models are similar in appearance to the originals, but they are, generally, slightly thicker than their predecessors, with a translucent half-sphere at the tip. Recently, Ive learned that J.K. Rowling did use some criteria in the wand selection for each character that appears to carry over to Ollivanders Wand Shop at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

This is probably old information for you hard core Harry Potter fans, but I found it all very interesting and thought that it might affect which wand I bought from Ollivanders on my next visit.

Purely by coincidence, after selecting the type of wood for Harrys wand , J.K. Rowling discovered that Harrys birthday coincided with holly on the Celtic calendar that assigns different types of wood to sections of the calendar.

With this fortuitous match, J.K. decided to follow this guideline for Ron and Hermiones wands, as well to further entrench the connection these three characters have in the story. Some Harry Potter characters have wands according to the Celtic calendar and some dont. Any other than these three are chance, not intentional, but interesting, nonetheless.

Allow me a quick aside. Ms. Rowling selected holly for Harry due to its traditional European associations with repelling evil. Similarly, she selected yew for Voldemort, as its associated with astonishing longevity. These are wonderful literary associations that really add depth to a story. Very cool!

What Is The Difference Between Interactive Wands And Regular Wands

There are two types of wands sold at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – interactive and non-interactive. Both type of wands look exactly the same except at the tip. Interactive wands have a small glass tip which is where the magic escapes from the wand and interacts with various parts of the park. Interactive wands are also a little bit lighter in weight than non-interactive wands.

Be careful with the tips. Although I have not seen this myself, I’ve heard that the tips can be broken so always treat your wand with care.

Differences Between Diagon Alley And Hogsmeade

Generally speaking, the interactive wand experience in Hogsmeade seems to be more difficult than the one in Diagon Alley. Not only are many of the spells more challenging to execute some of the effects have been incorporated into existing windows, making the cameras harder to find and less effective at detecting wand movement but some guests might be unaware of the experience and can walk, stand, or push in front of spell-casters. If you are accompanying a young witch or wizard, you may want to stand in the space beside a window to block interference while she is attempting to cast.

We recommend beginning your interactive wand experience in Diagon Alley to develop some magical expertise before heading over to Hogsmeade. It seems that there are not as many team members on-hand to assist at the latter, so London is the perfect place to start.
