Price Wars And Other Controversies

Asda, along with several other UK supermarkets, having already taken pre-orders for the book at a heavily discounted price, sparked a price war two days before the books launch by announcing they would sell it for just £5 a copy. Other retail chains then also offered the book at discounted prices. At these prices the book became a loss leader. This caused uproar from traditional UK booksellers who argued they had no hope of competing in those conditions. Independent shops protested loudest, but even Waterstones, the UKs largest dedicated chain bookstore, could not compete with the supermarket price. Some small bookstores hit back by buying their stock from the supermarkets rather than their wholesalers. Asda attempted to counter this by imposing a limit of two copies per customer to prevent bulk purchases. Philip Wicks, a spokesman for the UK Booksellers Association, said, It is a war we cant even participate in. We think its a crying shame that the supermarkets have decided to treat it as a loss-leader, like a can of baked beans. Michael Norris, an analyst at Simba Information, said: You are not only lowering the price of the book. At this point, you are lowering the value of reading.

Thursday Night Previews: Grindelwalds Previews Were Fantastic And Beastly

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald earned $9.1 million during previews on Thursday, which is better than Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them managed. Granted, it was better by mere percentage points, as that earlier film earned $8.75 million during its previews. Where it goes from here is a bit of a mystery. On the one hand, its reviews are much worse than the previous installments reviews were and it is a sequel. Both of those facts suggest shorter legs. However, the gap between Fantastic Beasts and the last original Harry Potter film may have resulted in a much more front-loaded run, so The Crimes of Grindelwald could benefit from that. As always, we will know better this time tomorrow when Friday estimates are out. More…

Trailer for “Deathly Hallows: Part 2”

We return to find Harry, Ron, and Hermione are left to bury Dobby and they resume their task to find more horcruxes. They get a hold of Helga Hufflepuff’s cup from Bellatrix’s vault in Gringots, but Griphook, the goblin, betrays them and sends a “security” dragon against them.

However, they manage to flee on the dragon’s back. The three learn of a horcrux created out of one of Rowena Ravenclaw’s possessions, her mother’s diadem. Harry, Ron, and Hermione learn that it’s located inside Hogwarts’ Room of Requirement, and they get help from Neville Longbottom to find a safe, secret passage into the castle. Ron and Hermione destroy Hufflepuff’s cup with a basilisk fang and follow with a kiss.

Harry locates the diadem, but is ambushed by Malfoy, Goyle, and Zambini who try to thwart their plans of destroying more horcruxes. Ron and Hermione help to defend Harry, and when Goyle’s curse backfires, it kills him and Harry saves Malfoy and Zambini in the process.

Harry proceeds to destroy the diadem with the basilisk fang and Ron launches it in the flaming remains of the Room of Requirement. Voldemort’s army attacks the school, and amid the fight, Voldemort believes that to become the true owner of the Elder wand, he has to kill Snape, who he thinks was the last to use it. Voldemort cuts Snape’s throat and sends Nagini after him to finish Snape off.

Snape says his final words to Harry before dying.

How Much Money Has The Play Made

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play currently on Broadway and the East End. Forbes claimed in 2019 that it had made a huge $146.5m on the former alone, and, when everything opens up again, it’s destined to be popular.

There’s a clamor for a movie to be made based on the play, and we’d all be up for seeing Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy’s adventures play out, especially if the play is anything to go by. It’d also be pretty amusing to see the trolley lady transform into a giant beast that pursues the pair and a final showdown in Godric’s Hollow, an iconic Potter setting, would make for entertaining viewing.

With Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone set to launch in China today, theres a pretty decent chance that the first chapter in Warner Bros. generational mega-hit franchise will earn just enough to push it past the $1 billion mark in unadjusted global earnings. So, to mark the occasion, I ranked the eight Daniel Radcliffe/Emma Watson/Rupert Grint-starring Harry Potter films in ascending order of global grosses, from the lowest to the highest, with a dash of relevant box office trivia. Also, just for fun, I listed each films respective yearly ranking as well as where it stood in the all-time global grossers list at the time of its release. Here’s How Much Money Emma Watson Made From Harry Potter

Nowadays, Emma Watson is recognized for her roles in touching dramas like “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and “Little Women,” but fans of the actress have been aware of the Brit’s talents since she was 11 when she debuted on the big screen as Hermione Granger in 2001’s “Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone.” Watson stole many a scene with her portrayal of the bookish, Muggle-born heroine in all eight films of the “Harry Potter” franchise. Watson, along with co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, shot to global stardom as the magical trio, making them multi-millionaires before they even began attending high school.

Since the last of the “Harry Potter” films debuted in 2011, Watson has appeared in 10 films to date. That’s a steady stream of work, considering she is also busy with her philanthropic work as a Women’s Ambassador for the United Nations. Based on how much she made from the “Harry Potter” films, it stands to reason that the successful child actress has the convenience of carefully considering which roles to take and when to focus on her other endeavors. In fact, based on how much she made from the franchise, the actress and activist would never have to work another day in her life if she preferred.

Friday Estimates: Fantastic Dominates Charts But With Just $297 Million

As expected, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them easily earned first place on Friday. However, it only managed $29.7 million, which was well below expectations. This is the worst opening day in the Harry Potter franchise since The Chamber of Secrets. The reviews are weaker than the franchise as a whole, but its CinemaScore is an A and thats roughly average for the previous 8 Harry Potter films. The film should still earn between $70 million and $75 million over the weekend, depending on if the high CinemaScore can overcome the Fanboy Effect. Rowling would have made at least $1 if she had taken a standard authors royalty cut of 2015%. 15 billion, not including the $7 billion earned from the film series. In the best case scenario, she would receive a 7 billion-dollar payout.

Every Potter movie ranked as one of the highest-grossing films of their given release years, ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011. Coincidentally, it’s also the shortest movie of the collection, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Fans even got to see the main cast members aged up at the end, just like in the source material, and it was good to see Voldemort defeated once and for all.
