How Harry Potter Characters Should Look

Don't Miss

Luna Lovegood Evanna Lynch

What These Harry Potter Characters Were Supposed To Look Like

On the surface, Evanna Lynch may seem like a direct match to Luna Lovegood in the books. She plays the character, quirks and all, to perfection. And she always looks surprised, one of the characters defining traits.

On-screen, however, Luna is given almost platinum blonde hair, not dirty as described in the books. Her eye color also doesnt match, which at this point on the list feels like a small thing to nitpick.

Lupin And Tonks The Shapeshifting Couple

Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks, the werewolf and the metamorphagus. Another pair that came to a tragic end, these two are represented brilliantly here with the dual images from night to day. Lupin is seen for both his human wolfish sides, while Tonks is displayed wearing two of the infinite possibilities for appearances she can change into.

This is another example of a fan-created moment we never got to see much of in the official series. Tonks and Lupin were only together by the beginning of The Deathly Hallows and were both lost before the story’s end. It’s nice to see them happily for a change. Nearly every time they’re seen together in the books and movies has been hurried and tense. This is the kind of image fans of these characters would love to have seen more of.

Tom Riddle/ Lord Voldemort

As an adolescent and as an adult, Voldemort was odd and menacing. Children were scared of him at the orphanage, and his penchant towards the Dark Arts made him automatically dangerous to be around. With a slew of threatening servants, friends, and snakes, he would actually be a lethal roommate to have.

Disagreements would be a no-no, and should there be one it would end badly for the other person .

Bellatrix Lestrange In Her Element

How the cast of Harry Potter should really look

Possibly the most sinister and demented witch among the Death Eaters, we see Bellatrix Lestrange here digitally painted in all her dark glory. The green hue of magic we see swirling around from her wand perfectly fits with the kind of magic we might actually see emanating from the woman. You can clearly see the wickedness inside of her eyes and smile here as well.

Bellatrix is clearly some sort of high-functioning sociopath.

There is no question that she enjoys inflicting pain and has little to no remorse for anyone. As one of the scariest of the group, it’s fitting to see her surrounded by darkness and clearly comfortable there. Slight gray splatters emitting from around her upper body give her an eerie kind of glow. If you’re ever facing a sight like this in person, it could very well be the last thing you ever see.

Harry’s Reflection In The Broken Mirror

A memorable image from the Deathly Hallows that’s significant on a number of levels. The mirror was a gift from Sirius that would have allowed Harry to communicate with him if he had ever used it. Unfortunately, Harry never touched it until after Sirius died, and shattered it shortly afterward. The mirror comes back in the Deathly Hallows to play an important part that actually ends up saving many lives.

Fans of the series will probably recognize this moment immediately.

The level of detail seen here is beautiful. Pencil drawings like this are always amazing, especially when conveying such a delicate moment as this. The look in Harry’s eyes is so realistic, and the many reflections of them in the mirror make it look even better. As one of the pivotal scenes of the last entry into the series, It’s nice to have this moment portrayed for our own eyes to see.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

In the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Rowling pits Harry against Tom Riddle, Lord Voldemort’s “memory” within a secret diary which has possessed Ron’s younger sister Ginny. When Muggle-born students are suddenly being Petrified, many suspect that Harry may be behind the attacks, further alienating him from his peers. Furthermore, Harry begins to doubt his worthiness for House of Gryffindor, particularly considering he discovers he shares Lord Voldemort’s ability to communicate with snakes via Parseltongue. In the climax, Ginny disappears. To rescue her, Harry battles Riddle and the monster he controls that is hidden in the Chamber of Secrets. To defeat the monster, Harry summons the Sword of Godric Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat supplied by Dumbledore’s pet phoenix, Fawkes. In doing so, Dumbledore later restores Harry’s self-esteem by explaining that that feat is clear proof of his worthiness of his present house.

Winky’s Story Deserves To Be Told Because It Highlights The Issue Of House

Harry Potter: What Slytherin Characters Should Really Look Like

Winky is the house-elf who cares for Barty Crouch Jr. after his mother switches places with him in Azkaban. Winky devotedly nurses him back to health until he’s strong enough to steal Harry’s wand and send up the Dark Mark. Watching her spiral after she’s set free would have underscored the perverse relationship between house-elves and wizards.

Flight Of The Fat Lady

  • While the book has Peeves describe Sirius Black’s attack on the Fat Lady’s portrait after learning about this from her when he saw her in a portrait on the fourth floor, in the film it was the Fat Lady herself that described the attack from a nearby portrait.
  • In the book, while Harry cannot go to Hogsmeade and stays with Lupin, they spend their time in his office and Harry sees a Grindylow which Lupin was taking delivery of for their next lesson, while in the film, they are talking on the Wooden Bridge. This difference creates a continuity error in the seventh film when Lupin interrogates Harry after the Battle of the Seven Potters holding his wand to Harry’s face and asking him ‘what creature sat in the corner the first time Harry Potter visited my office in Hogwarts.’

How Snape Looked In The Books

This photo edit shows what Snape might have looked like if the Harry Potter makeup artists focused more on the characters yellow and uneven teeth. Yes, thats how they are described in the book! However, as with Hermione, the filmmakers left the teeth out of Snapes look.

This edit also makes Snapes eyes look darker, which is closer to his original description. Rowlings description of Severus Snape was very fantastical, but his movie aesthetic makes him feel a bit more human.

It’s A Gryffindor Victory

It’s a celebration! There’s no Harry, Ron, and Hermione here though. Instead, we’re taken back to an earlier time and an earlier version of the Gryffindor house that we haven’t often seen. Dedicated fans may have noticed the two in Quidditch jerseys as the young James Potter and Sirius Black.

That’s right, this is a painting of the older generation celebrating during their school days.

Also in the picture, we can see young versions of Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and even a young Lilly Evans. There aren’t very many moments in the books or movies where we get to see these characters together like this. There certainly aren’t any moments as cheerful as this one. It’s nice to see the group looking so happy together, especially knowing the grim fates each of them has met. The warm colors and happy faces really give this piece an uplifting feeling.

Harry Potter: 15 Characters That Look Nothing Like They Do In The Books

They might have given great performances, but these Harry Potter actors don’t fit J.K. Rowling’s character descriptions very well.

No page-to-screen adaptation is perfect . There is so much to translate in terms of story, character, and setting, and sometimes something that works on the page might not be quite as exciting on the big screen. When it comes to the Harry Potter series, there was no shortage of changes made in creating the film franchise. Whole characters and subplots were cut out to keep the films at a reasonable length. In some cases, J.K. Rowlings beloved characters wound up looking a whole lot different, too.

There are a lot of reasons why some of the physical characteristics of these HP characters may have been altered. The casting directors for The Sorcerers Stone couldnt have predicted what the child actors would grow up to look like, for example. Plus, oftentimes, it likely came down to who was best suited for the role, not who looked most like the characters. Still, some of these differences ended up being pretty noticeable for eagle-eyed fans. Here are 15 Harry Potter Characters That Look Nothing Like They Do In The Books.

What The Harry Potter Cast Should Have Looked Like In The Movies

What should the cast of Harry Potter really look like?

The Harry Potter series has grown into a large and beloved Wizarding world. But sometimes, it’s easy to forget the humble beginnings of each of these beloved characters. And while all of these cast members of Harry Potter have added unique and awesome qualities to their respective characters, many of them don’t quite fit J.K. Rowling’s descriptions.

Here’s what exact, faithful adaptations to the movies would have created!

  • In the movies, Harry Potter is an able-bodied athlete with blue eyes and a sharp jawline. He’s not the tallest student at Hogwarts, but he’s definitely got the charm and masculine features to make audiences swoon.

    Magical Abilities And Skills

Throughout the series, Harry Potter is described as a gifted wizard apprentice. He has a particular talent for flying, which manifests itself in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone the first time he tries it, and gets him a place on a Quidditch team one year before the normal minimum joining age. He captains it in his sixth year. In his fourth year , Harry is able to confront a dragon on his broomstick.

Harry is also gifted in Defence Against the Dark Arts, in which he becomes proficient due to his repeated encounters with Voldemort and various monsters. In his third year, Harry becomes able to cast the very advanced Patronus Charm, and by his fifth year he has become so talented at the subject that he is able to teach his fellow students in Dumbledore’s Army, some even older than him how to defend themselves against Dark Magic. At the end of that year, he achieves an ‘Outstanding’ Defence Against the Dark Arts O.W.L., something that not even Hermione achieved. He is a skilled duellist, the only one of the six Dumbledore’s Army members to be neither injured nor incapacitated during the battle with Death Eaters in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He also fends off numerous Death Eaters during his flight to the Burrow at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

Harry first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Starting in 1981, when Harry was just one year old, his parents, James and Lily, were murdered by the most powerful Dark Wizard, Lord Voldemort . He attempted to kill Harry too, but was unsuccessful and only left a lightning bolt shaped scar on Harry’s forehead. Voldemort’s body was destroyed, but his soul was not. Harry later learns that the reason why he survived was that his mother sacrificed herself for him, and her love was something that Voldemort could not destroy.

According to Rowling, fleshing out this back story was a matter of reverse planning: “The basic idea Harry … didn’t know he was a wizard … and so then I kind of worked backwards from that position to find out how that could be, that he wouldn’t know what he was… That’s… When he was one year old, the most evil wizard for hundreds and hundreds of years attempted to kill him. He killed Harry’s parents, and then he tried to kill Harryhe tried to curse him…. Harry has to find out, before we find out. And for some mysterious reason, the curse didn’t work on Harry. So he’s left with this lightning-bolt shaped scar on his forehead, and the curse rebounded upon the evil wizard who has been in hiding ever since”.
