Jk Rowling Says She Received Loads Of Rejections Before Harry Potter Successs
JK Rowling has offered hope to aspiring authors everywhere, after revealing that the first literary agent she sent the manuscript of Harry Potter to responded with just a slip of paper rejecting it.
To add insult to injury, the agent also held onto the folder she submitted her work in, Rowling wrote on Twitter, in response to a question from a fan who asked if she would ever get nervous emailing agents when she first started out.
The first agent I ever queried sent back a slip saying My list is full. The folder you sent wouldnt fit in the envelope, replied Rowling. I really minded about the folder, because I had almost no money and had to buy another one.
Asked: How many folders do you have now JK? by one of her 4.38m followers, the novelist replied, tongue in cheek: I now have over a million folders, all made of costly silks, each one hand-gilded by artisans in Paris, adding the hashtag JK, for just kidding, or in her case, Joanne Kathleen as well.
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone had been written in Edinburgh cafes while Rowling and her daughter lived on benefits. It was accepted by Christopher Little, the next literary agent she submitted it to.
She told another fan on Twitter that she received loads of rejections before she finally got published Little sent the manuscript to 12 different publishers before it ended up with Bloomsbury.
Who Really Wrote Harry Potter
J.K. Rowling first had the idea for Harry Potter while delayed on a train travelling from Manchester to London Kings Cross in 1990. Over the next five years, she began to plan out the seven books of the series. She wrote mostly in longhand and amassed a mountain of notes, many of which were on scraps of paper.
Book Five: Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
Rowling stayed true to her word and went on vacationkind of. She stepped away from the Harry Potter series to work on a completely unrelated book . After a yearlong sabbatical, Rowling started on the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Rowling had written the first four books in a blisteringly fast five years, but she told her publishers she didnt want a deadline with book five, especially after dealing with the plot problems in Goblet of Fire. Her publishers had no other choice but to agree.
Even then, though, Rowling still struggled to keep up.
She has said numerous times that she wished she had better edited Order of the Phoenix:
I think could have been shorter. I knew that, and I ran out of time and energy toward the end.
And its no wonder. During the two years Rowling wrote the 870-page Phoenix, she also:
- got married,
- fought a bogus plagiarism lawsuit,
- started several charity organizations,
- consulted for the new Potter films,
- and ran around fulfilling her endless PR obligations.
Worst of all, Rowling was drowning in a never-ending deluge of paparazzi.
Rowlings fame had grown to such bewildering heights that the attention had become relentless. This was quite a shock for her, especially since she had thought that her Harry Potter story would only appeal to a handful of people:
Its very difficult to say . . . how angry I felt that my 5-year-old daughters school was no longer a place of . . . complete security from journalists.

This week, the author took to to clear up a few myths around places claimed to be the birthplace of Harry Potter, and share the true inspirations behind her stories.
The Elephant House cafe in Edinburgh has long been known as a source of inspiration for Rowling, who sat writing much of her early novels in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle, according to the cafes website, and a sign outside the store claiming to be the birthplace of Harry Potter. Rowling, however, said shed actually been writing the series for several years before she started writing in the cafe.
Rowling has shared before that she spend significant time writing at former café Nicholsons in Edinburgh. Now a Chinese restaurant, Rowling said I once wrote an entire chapter in there in one sitting and barely changed a word afterwards. Those are the days you remember.

Though the exact location of Hogwarts has never been acknowledged, there has been rumor that J.D. will be located there. A magical school in Edinburgh is based on George Heriots School, which is in the city center of the city. It was built in 1628 and consists of four towers. Its gothic architecture made it one of the authors favorite buildings.

Reports surfaced in 2012 that Rowling was working on a crime novel, but the author stayed silent about what she’d write next.
In April of 2013, Little Brown published “The Cuckoo’s Calling,” about the fictional detective Cormoran Strike and his ambitious assistant Robin Ellacott. It was purported to have been written by a guy named Robert Galbraith. Reviews were good and sales were unremarkable.
A family friend of one of Rowling’s lawyers let slip that Galbraith was, in fact, a pen name for J.K. Rowling. On Amazon, sales of “The Cuckoo’s Calling” rose by more than 150,000%. JK Rowling has revealed where she started writing the Harry Potter books, contradicting fans who believed for years that Edinburgh was its birthplace.
The Elephant House Cafe in Edinburgh is widely regarded as the place the now 54-year-old author wrote the first of the seven fantasy novels.
While it is true that Rowling used to frequent the cafe in the early days of her writing career, the author revealed yesterday that she actually started the series in London, in a flat above a sports shop in Clapham.
Referring to the sign on Elephant House which reads birthplace of Harry Potter, Rowling tweeted: Id been writing Potter for several years before I ever set foot in this cafe, so its not the birthplace, but I *did* write in there so well let them off!
Rowling then shared a picture of the Clapham flat where she started her writing process. This is the true birthplace of Harry Potter, she said. If you define birthplace as the spot where I put pen to paper for the first time.

Publishers Rejected The First Harry Potter Book
Upon completing her manuscript in 1995, Rowling followed through with the plan for teachers certification while hunting down literary representation. A three-chapter sample of Harry Potter was enough to reel in a London agent Christopher Little, though the regional publishing houses seemed largely immune to the magic of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Co.
Following a dozen rejections, Little finally found a taker in London publishing house Bloomsbury, which offered a £1,500 advance. Rowling also snagged an £8,000 grant from the Scottish Arts Council, enabling her to finish a Harry Potter sequel on a brand-new typewriter.
On June 26, 1997, the author saw her hard work come to fruition with the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone in the U.K. She was now known as J.K. Rowling, due to concerns about how boys would respond to a female writer, but the name change was fitting in that her life of anonymity was about to end.

The Magic Behind Harry Potter
Next week, children and adults around the world will finally be able to buy the book they’ve been waiting three years for: “Harry Potter And the Order Of The Phoenix”.
This fifth installment in the Harry Potter series will no doubt set all sorts of new publishing records. Right now, 8.5 million copies have been printed just for the U.S. market.
60 Minutes first introduced you to J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter’s creator, almost four years ago. And at the time, she was just beginning to understand the phenomenon she had produced.
Correspondent Lesley Stahl interviewed Rowling in a broadcast that first aired October 3, 2002.
Today, there may be someone somewhere who doesn’t know him, but we can’t find him.
Harry Potter is the wizard hero of the world’s most popular novels – four so far, with three more to come. He’s also the star of two blockbuster movies.
Nothing has ever happened in the world of children’s books or any other kind of books, for that matter, to even approach the Harry Potter phenomenon.
But when we first introduced audiences to Joanne Rowling, Harry’s creator, the third book was just about to come out, and the scale of her success was just beginning to sink in.
Joanne Rowling, 36, currently the world’s most successful author, lives and writes in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle in Scotland.
“The basic plot is that Harry’s not only a wizard, he’s a famous wizard, which he doesn’t find out until he’s 11,” says Rowling.

You can queue up and take a picture there any time of the day without a paid ticket for the train. Even Warwick Davis, who played Professor Flitwick in the âHarry Potterâ films, has visited.
