It’s Also Possible To Fly Without Broomsticks

‘Harry Potter and the Chamber Secrets’ Film Facts | 10 Facts You Need To Know

Broomsticks are an iconic aspect of the Harry Potter franchise. Of course, it’s not like Rowling invented the concept of using brooms to fly that had already been established a long, long time ago. However, one can’t deny that the sheer amount of thought that was put into these brooms is nothing short of outstanding. However, similar to the previous entry, brooms aren’t necessary for people to fly. The logic that goes behind this is surprisingly well thought out.

Basically, wands and brooms are tools that channel magic.

While they do make the process of flying or casting easier, it’s not required for a skilled spellcaster to use these tools so that they can use magic. They can discard them if they wish although it’s not recommended, since magic that’s not channeled properly can end up being volatile and dangerous.

Harry Can No Longer Speak Parseltongue

After the fragment of Voldemort’s soul that had been kept inside Harry was destroyed as the true final Horcrux, Harry lost his ability to speak Parseltongue. It’s kind of sad, in a way, since Harry had been able to use that gift to his benefit several times.

He saved Justin Finch-Fletchley at the Dueling Club, unlocked the Chamber of Secrets, and was able to understand various conversations thanks to his gift. It would have been interesting to allow Harry to keep his gift, as it marked him as a particularly unusual individual among his Gryffindor alumnus.

Old Wizards Hate Pants

Wizards, at least the most traditional of sorts, apparently don’t like wearing pants. They’ll do it, of course, to blend in with muggles as they go about their world, but, in private and among friends, it’s a talked-about cultural preference to wear robes.

That might explain why the Dapper Dumbledore of Fantastic Beasts goes full Gandalf by the time the Sorcerer’s Stone rolls around or why Voldemort is always rocking “tarp-chic.” According to J.K. Rowling, there was actually a wizard movement to spread the anti-pants message, officially deemed the Fresh Air Refreshes Totally movement.

Richard Harris Agreed To Play Dumbledore Because His Granddaughter Asked Him

Richard Harris was the actor who brought Dumbledore, the iconic Hogwarts headmaster, to life for the first two movies. Yet, producers had a really hard time convincing him to take on the role: Harris turned down the part three times! He had not read the books, and even though he knew the films would be a hit, he was not interested in taking on a project with so many films. Who changed his mind was his granddaughter, 11 years old at the time, who vowed that she would stop talking to him if he didn’t take the role. Her threat paid off, and the Irish actor delivered an excellent performance in the films. Unfortunately, Harris passed away in 2002, and the role of Dumbledore thereafter was taken over by Michael Gambon.

Books In The Harry Potter Series

He Didn’t Graduate From Hogwarts

There’s probably no need for a GED when you save the wizarding world from evil. In an interview with Pottercast in 2007, J.K. Rowling explained that Harry did not graduate from Hogwarts. After the Battle of Hogwarts, Hermione returned to school and passed her NEWTS with flying colors before joining Harry and Ron at the Ministry of Magic.

Harry and Ron, however, chose to be done with school. It makes sense why Ron would have no interest in returning, but it’s a bit strange that Harry decided to opt out of finishing his seventh year, especially when you consider how Hogwarts was the only place he ever felt home. However, his choice was probably for the best. Hogwarts post-battle probably held a lot of traumatic memories for the Boy Who Lived and Harry was definitely needed in the now-depleted Auror department. Who else wonders what a Hogwarts graduation is like?

Kids Are Just Homeschooled Before Hogwarts

Any devout Harry Potter fan will easily recite the fact that kids are eligible to attend Hogwarts when they’re around eleven to twelve years old. However, what might surprise you is that before they can attend Hogwarts, there is no established form of schooling available to these people.

Instead, they’re supposed to be homeschooled before this age.

This is certainly not ideal by any means. After all, it’s during these growing stages that children are supposed to learn as much as they can, and homeschooling is by no means an ideal way to educate your kid. One must wonder exactly why these kids aren’t afforded the education they deserve.

But hey, it’s not all that bad. After all…

Each Hogwarts House Common Room Has A Different Way Of Getting Inside It

Whether youre Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw or Slytherin, you have your own common room. But there are different ways to get into each one!

For Gryffindors, a simple password given to the Fat Lady will suffice, unless you forget it, like Neville did. For Slytherins, its the same thing except you mutter a password to a stone wall near the dungeons. For Hufflepuffs, its a bit more complicated you must tap one of the barrels near the school kitchens to the rhythm of ‘Helga Hufflepuff’. For Ravenclaws, even more complicated! You need to answer a riddle told to you by an enchanted door knocker. Gryffindors and Slytherins have it easy!

A Malfoy Almost Married Queen Elizabeth The First

The wizard history and muggle history of the Harry Potter universe split sometime in the middle of the millennia. However, this very nearly wasn’t the case. According to Pottermore, an ancestor of Draco Malfoy actually tried to marry Queen Elizabeth the First. Had this happened, we suspect that the two histories wouldn’t have split at all and that they both would be a lot worse off.

Still, most fans wouldn’t say no to an alternate timeline story set in a world where that happened. In fact, it could make for a pretty cool period drama à la The Favourite featuring Queen Elizabeth rejecting Old-Timey Malfoy’s proposals. Just as long as Tom Felton plays the Malfoy ancestor.

Harry Potter gradually grew up, and his glasses followed him along the way, from the first to the last movie. In fact, along with his scar, they became the most iconic elements of the character. However, while filming, these glasses would often get broken, so the prop department always kept another pair ready for him. Near the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2‘s production, Daniel Radcliffe had already worn more than 160 pairs of glasses.

Ron Weasley Was Nearly On The Chopping Block

Did you know that Malfoy actually helped Harry in the Battle for Hogwarts? #harrypotter #shorts

The Harry Potter trio, which included the namesake himself and his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, were as close-knit as young teenagers can possibly be when facing life-threatening circumstances at least a couple of times each year.

From the beginning, J.K. Rowling knew that she would never kill off any of her special three. Despite this, halfway through writing the series, Rowling nearly killed off everyones favorite red-headed arachnophobe, Ron Weasley.

Midway through, which I think is a reflection of the fact that I wasnt in a very happy place, I started thinking I might polish one of them off, out of sheer spite, Rowling said.

Daniel Radcliffe Almost Wasn’t Harry Potter

It feels nearly impossible to picture Harry Potter as anyone but Daniel Radcliffe. Even though the first books came out long before casting for the films had started, those early illustrations of Harry look like Radcliffe. But Daniel as Harry almost didn’t come to pass.

Steven Spielberg was originally tapped to direct the film adaptation of the first book, and he wanted Haley Joel Osment to play Harry . But creative differences between Rowling and Spielberg led to director Christopher Columbus stepping in, and Daniel Radcliffe went on to beat out 300 other Harry hopefuls during the casting process.

Slytherin’s Descendant Founded Ilvermorny

Unfortunately, Salazar Slytherins hatred of muggles did not die with him. But Im getting ahead of myself. One of Slytherins descendants, Isolt Sayre, an Irishwoman, ended up in North America, and went on to found the American school of witchcraft and wizardry, Ilvermorny.

She wanted to create a school as she had never been able to attend Hogwarts, but had grown up hearing about it from her aunt, which brings us back to Slytherins hatred of muggles.

Isolts aunt took out her parents because she saw how they interacted freely with muggles, and was terrified her niece would grow up and marry a muggle, and thus tarnish the bloodline. When Isolt was old enough, she escaped to America, and went on to found the school.

Hagrid Bought Fluffy From A Greek Chappie He Knew

Fans of the series will know Fluffy as the three-headed dog lurking on the forbidden third floor at Hogwarts. Right at the start of the book series, Hagrid reveals that he bought the unlikely pet from a Greek chappie he met in the Leaky Cauldron pub. Fluffy is a direct borrowing from Greek mythology Cerberus was the most famous three-headed dog in literary history and was responsible for guarding the Underworld.

For some reason in the films, Hagrid says that he bought Fluffy from an Irish fella instead, perhaps a reference to actor Robbie Coltranes Celtic roots. This meant that the original Greek mythology connection disappeared. Rowling was probably inspired by her time as a Classics student at Exeter, with the series also including legendary monsters such as the basilisk, a griffin and goblins.

Special Effects In The Films Ranged From Green Screens To Animatronics

HARRY POTTER FACTS YOU DIDN

From Quidditch sequences to the flying books in Hogwarts’ library, green-screen technology played an essential part in bringing the magic of the “Harry Potter” universe to the big screen.

Not every special effect, however, was added post-production. Animatronics were used for creatures such as Professor Sprout’s baby mandrakes and the “Monster Book of Monsters.” There was also an animatronic Buckbeak used for close-up shots of the Hippogriff.

Jamie Waylett Was Cut From The Film After Being Arrested For Drug Possession

Fans of the films were surprised to see Crabbe cut from the big screen after the first six films, despite being present in all the books, but it seems that this was due to his problems with the law.

Waylett didnt cope well with the pressure of fame, and in 2006 was accused of having a problem with cocaine and marijuana. A series of tabloid articles alleged that he was constantly using, and even going to Harry Potter premieres while high. Then, in 2009, his car was searched and found to contain bags of weed and a knife and plants were found at his mothers house.

He was charged with possession and sentenced to community service. After being cut from the films, he ended up spending time in prison for his participation in the London riots of 2011 and cannabis possession.

There Have Been Multiple Attempts To Remove Peeves

Oh, Peeves. A mischief-maker, shelf over-turner, and overall chaos-inducer, he is more of a force than anything else. It seems that his entire existence at Hogwarts was similar. Allow the stage to be set. The year is 1876 and the caretaker is Rancorous Carpe. He tried to bait Peeves into a trap with a multitude of weapons.

He assumed these weapons would draw dear Peeves. He was right, But the trap couldnt hold Peeves.

He escaped, armed to the teeth, and proceeded to have a three-day standoff, which only ended when the Headmistress, Eupraxia Mole, granted Peeves extra rights, like swimming in toilets and getting first take at stale bread to throw at students, and a new hat.
